Intel WiFi 6 AX200 & AX201 (Cyclone/Harrison Peak 2) Early-Bird Support

Post by warpz0ne » Thu Jul 04, 2019 4:17 pm

Well, a quick search of this forum seems to turn up nothing about these new 802.11ax wireless adapters, so why not have a thread about it?
Intel ARK Page — AX200
Intel ARK Page — AX201

I recently moved to a place where it’s inconvenient to do a hard-wired ethernet connection for my dual-boot tower PC. After some months using a leftover USB wireless-N adapter limited to 2.4GHz, typically topping out at 2MB/s in spite of a proclaimed 150Mbps (18.75MB/s) on the thing itself, I was ready for a more permanent upgrade. Brief research seemed to show that the AX200 series cards were possibly supported in Linux, so I took a chance, and picked up a version packaged for PCIe connection. Naturally, it works fine in Windows with drivers from Intel. Great speeds—only limited by my ISP plan level and 802.11ac router.

But it turns out, the WiFi does not work out-of-the-box in Linux Mint 19.1. It shows up in lspci, but not dmesg. [Note: 2723 is AX200 specific]

user@Mint:~$ lspci | grep 2723 09:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 2723 (rev 1a)

The Bluetooth part of the card, connected via USB header cable, works as one would expect. I am not able to test the Bluetooth 5 level functionality.

More research on how to get the AX200 working in Linux revealed the following:

*AX201 requires kernel version 5.2+

My current plan is to just wait it out until Mint has an option for 5.1 kernels in Update Manager. Maybe that will happen with Mint 19.2. I can afford to be patient because the card works in Windows for any big downloads, otherwise the USB adapter is left connected for Mint.

When the day comes, I’ve got the firmware files already in place for iwlwifi to pick up.

user@Mint:~$ ls /lib/firmware | grep iwlwifi-cc-a0 iwlwifi-cc-a0-46.ucode iwlwifi-cc-a0-48.ucode

So, has anyone been brave/stubborn enough to get their card working? Did you go with installing a newer kernel version, backports, or something else?

That page contains firmware, not drivers. They are different things. And it explains how to install that firmware.
In Debian however it is easier and more reliable to install the package firmware-iwlwifi from the non-free repository. You need to have non-free active in your sources first of course.
The Debian wiki page explains it all — https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi

The list on the Wiki is too old.
AX201 has been supported since kernel 5.2, so the download you did is something that’s already in firmware-iwlwifi.
For much newer drivers, you’d have to compile experimental drivers and maybe even a new kernel, which I wouldn’t suggest.

Please make sure that firmware-iwlwifi is installed.

Also, make sure you’re not afflicted by the error that’s described on the wiki under Troubleshoot:

Slow WiFi problems when using Bluetooth

Some devices like the 6235 do include a Bluetooth device in the same card, which may lead into radio conflict. Newer devices (7200 and up) try to solve them intelligently, but it is not the case of older ones.

If your WiFi is slow when using Bluetooth, try adding the following to /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf and reboot:

options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=0 swcrypto=1 11n_disable=8

Stable / Asus VivoBook X421DA / AMD Ryzen 7 3700U / Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx (Picasso) / 8 GB RAM / 512GB NVMe

There are lots of AX201 firmwares listed on the package page — https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/firmware-iwlwifi . No idea which one is yours.

firmware-iwlwifi is installed, I saw it two days ago but file /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf is missing

my mini PC running Ubuntu 22.04 (kernel 5.19.0-35-generic) with an Intel Corporation Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz (rev 01) . Unfortunately this WiFi module doesn’t work at all. I can’t search the connection and also the WiFi menu is missing from the OS settings.

Bluetooth doesn’t work either, but I don’t know if the problem is related

I have inserted some attachments with the output of debug commands.
