Download Oracle Java JRE & JDK using a script

Oracle has recently disallowed direct downloads of java from their servers (without going through the browser and agreeing to their terms, which you can look at here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/terms/license/index.html). So, if you try:

wget «http://download.oracle.com/otn-pub/java/jdk/7u4-b20/jdk-7u4-linux-x64.tar.gz»

you will receive a page with «In order to download products from Oracle Technology Network you must agree to the OTN license terms» error message.

This can be rather troublesome for setting up servers with automated scripts.

Luckily, it seems that a single cookie is all that is needed to bypass this (you still have to agree to the terms to install):

Cookie: gpw_e24=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oracle.com%2F; oraclelicense=accept-securebackup-cookie

So, if you want to download jdk7u4 for 64-bit Linux (e.g., Ubuntu) using wget, you can use:

wget —no-cookies —no-check-certificate —header «Cookie: gpw_e24=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oracle.com%2F; oraclelicense=accept-securebackup-cookie» «http://download.oracle.com/otn-pub/java/jdk/7u4-b20/jdk-7u4-linux-x64.tar.gz»

UPDATE 2: Seems that you now need the —no-check-certificate flag for wget or you’ll get a «cannot verify edelivery.oracle.com’s certificate» error.

UPDATE 3: Starting with 7u51 they changed the cookie name, it’s now «oraclelicense», thank you Yngve for posting in the comments — I updated the commands to include both cookies.

Installation of Oracle Java 1.6.0_45 on CentOS /RHEL 6.x

Installation of Oracle Java 1.6.0_45 on CentOS /RHEL 6.x

UnZipSFX 5.50 of 17 February 2002, by Info-ZIP ([email protected]).

1. Make sure the file is executable:
   chmod +x jdk-6u23-linux-x64.bin
2. Next run the installer:
   ./jdk-6u23-linux-x64.bin
   At the end of the installation just hit enter.
3. Remove the installation package:
   rm -f jdk-6u23-linux-x64.bin
4. Finally, we need to add a symbolic link to the Java executable:
   ln -s /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_23/bin/java /usr/bin/java
   I assumed you only want to have one version of Java installed. Just in case you already have another Java version installed and you want to be able to flexibly choose among those versions, you can establish the symbolic link with the alternatives command:
   alternatives –install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_23/bin/java 2
   alternatives –config java
   Choose the Java version you want to have referenced.

That’s it! Type java -version on the command line and you should get a similar result to this:

java version “1.6.0_23”
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_23-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode)

Finally, you might want to add the environment variable JAVA_HOME (which is needed by Apache Tomcat server, for example). To do so, simply type this command in your command line:

echo “export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_23” >> /etc/profile

This commando will write the JAVA_HOME environment variable to the file /etc/profile which contains system wide environment configuration.

This tutorial shows you how to install JDK 6 on Linux (32 or 64 bit). For this installation I choose the CentOS 6.6.

1. Find the latest version of Java

First, you have to download the Java (JDK) installation kit for Windows from the Oracle archive (for Java 6). The JDK is a development environment for building applications, applets, and components using the Java programming language. The JDK includes tools useful for developing and testing programs written in the Java programming language and running on the JavaTM platform.

You have also to know how to download the latest Java (JDK) version if you have to, but for the moment I will present in this article how to install Java (JDK) 6 on Linux.

On a 64-bit system, you can download either the 64-bit or the 32-bit version of the Java platform. However, if you are using a 32-bit browser and you want to use the plugin, then you need to install the 32-bit version of the Java platform.

ATTENTION: On 64-bit Linux platforms the 32-bit JDK and 64-bit JDK cannot co-exist when installed from the RPM bundles. One must install one or the other but not both. The workaround is to use the .bin bundle and install into distinct directories.

For this version the JDK in provided in an self-extracting file .bin. These files must be unpacked.

2. Extract the RPM and JDK directory

See the downloaded files and see the rights for these files. Change the rights for these files.

Now you can use jdk1.6.0_45 directory or you can use jdk-6u45-linux-i586.rpm package to install the JDK 6 (as root )

3. Install the JDK on Linux (CentOS, RHEL, OEL) using the RPM package

Find the JDK you have installed on Linux

rpm -ivh jdk-6u45-linux-i586.rpm

ATTENTION: Installation of Oracle Linux JDK using RPM packages allows you to perform a system-wide installation of the JDK for all users, and requires root access. RPM-based Linux platforms are based on Red Hat and SuSE.

When you download and install the Java Development Kit (JDK), the associated Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is also installed.

4. Verify your JDK installation on Linux

This command will show you the version of java you have in the PATH variable. Under Linux you can have many java installation (different versions) but you can use only one.
