Git is a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency.

Choose one of the following options.

Determine on which Linux distribution your system is based on. See List of Linux distributions – Wikipedia for a list. Most Linux systems – including Ubuntu – are Debian-based.

Debian-based linux systems

Open a terminal window. Copy & paste the following into the terminal window and hit Return . You may be prompted to enter your password.

sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade sudo apt install git

You can use Git now.

Red Hat-based linux systems

Open a terminal. Copy & paste the following into the terminal window and hit Return . You may be prompted to enter your password.

sudo yum upgrade sudo yum install git

You can use Git now.

Homebrew […] simplifies the installation of software on the Mac OS X operating system.

Copy & paste the following into the terminal window and hit Return .

/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh)" brew doctor

You will be offered to install the Command Line Developer Tools from Apple. Confirm by clicking Install. After the installation finished, continue installing Homebrew by hitting Return again.

Copy & paste the following into the terminal window and hit Return .

You can use Git now.

Installing Git on Windows

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:git-core/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install git

Install git on Ubuntu

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:git-core/ppa --yes --update sudo apt-get install git --yes

In this tutorial we learn how to install git on Kali Linux.

What is git

Git is popular version control system designed to handle very large projects with speed and efficiency; it is used for many high profile open source projects, most notably the Linux kernel.

Git falls in the category of distributed source code management tools. Every Git working directory is a full-fledged repository with full revision tracking capabilities, not dependent on network access or a central server.

This package provides the git main components with minimal dependencies. Additional functionality, e.g. a graphical user interface and revision tree visualizer, tools for interoperating with other VCS’s, or a web interface, is provided as separate git* packages.

There are three ways to install git on Kali Linux . We can use apt-get , apt and aptitude . In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install git Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

After updating apt database, We can install git using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install git 

Install git Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

Install git Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

How To Uninstall git on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the git package we can use the following command:

To uninstall git and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove git 

Remove git Configurations and Data

To remove git configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

Remove git configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove git configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge git

Git developers provide prebuild binaries for Windows versions. We will download these binaries from the following link.

After clicking download we will redirected into following URL which is git version 2.18 release files.

We have 32, 64 bit options with portable or without installation executables.
