Bluetooth not getting enabled in Kali Linux inside Virtualbox

Shahab 570 Asks: Bluetooth not getting enabled in Kali Linux inside Virtualbox
I installed Virtualbox and set up kali Linux Yesterday. I wanted to connect my Bluetooth speaker. I went to the setting and tried to enable the button to turn on Bluetooth. But that button didn’t work. Bluetooth section says «NO Bluetooth found. Plug in a dongle to use Bluetooth».

My question is why do I need to use a dongle? My Bluetooth works fine when I am using Windows 10. But inside VirtualBox, I can’t use Bluetooth. Why is it happening? How can I use Bluetooth in Kali Linux inside VirtualBox? Please provide me a solution to this problem.

Why is it okay for my .bashrc or .zshrc to be writable by my normal user?

Zach Huxford Asks: Why is it okay for my .bashrc or .zshrc to be writable by my normal user?
My user ~/.zshrc file has the following default privileges

My understanding of user permissions is that any process spawned by my user will then have read/write permissions to this file.

In malicious hands this could probably be used to edit aliases or append a directory of the attackers choosing to the beginning of the $PATH. I’m concerned that a malicious program that I install on the user level could then trick me into somehow giving up my sudo password through this method.

Obviously I do trust most of the programs that I install to not be malicious, however, I do use npm as a package manager for my own projects which is commonly accepted to be a vector for malware due to the sheer number of dependencies each module and it’s dependencies can have.

I know that running sudo npm install -g is really bad practice but is using npm as a user which has write access to your main shell configuration file almost as bad just with a few extra steps in between, or am I lacking an understanding of how user permissions/shell configuration/npm works?

If this is insecure, then have I somehow missed security good practice for handling node js projects?

SFTP user login details real-time filtering

Amal P Ramesh Asks: SFTP user login details real-time filtering
I have enabled the SFTP login log into the default logfile /var/log/syslog and tried to filter the login time of each user and insert it into the database.

But the filtering is not worked as I expected.

Needs to filter user login messages, like:

Jun 23 15:47:13 ip-172-16-0-62 systemd[1]: Started Session 11907571 of user ftpuser1.

I need to grep it out by matching the string «Started Session 11907571 of user ftpuser1 «

The session number 11907571 is a random number and usernames also differ so grepping can ignore the numbers and usernames, only need to check the string like: **»Started Session *** of user ***»

And need to parse the line and grep the date + time , and username then insert it into the MySQL database.

If there is any option to create a daemon process to run and insert the details into DB, it will help me to do the task.

get nat port forwarding IP address

gyandoo Asks: get nat port forwarding IP address
I am using an android phone that is connected to an openwrt router via usb tether

The android phone has a dynamic wan gateway on each reboot

To make things easy for me to connect to the webui of some of the apps on the android phone via the openwrt router, I created a port forwarding rule in openwrt and entered the wan ip of the android phone manually. port forwarding rule

On each reboot of the android phone, i will have to check the routes in openwrt, get the new wan ip and update the port forwarding rule, which is fine

to make things easier on my linux machine, id like to be able to use CLI to get that wan ip that i set in port forwarding i.e 192.168.1.1:32399

not that it matters, but curlftpfs ftp mounting isn’t playing well with nat, all other android app webui’s are working fine with the port redirect, curlftpfs requires the wan ip, it finds the wan ip in debug but skips it

Virtualbox Bluetooth

I am using VirtualBox and install windows 11, but I am still unable to activate bluetooth, no button shows to on/off bluetooth. please guide me for this how to on/off or activate bluetooth.

You need to understand that a virtual machine only seems the virtual hardware provided by the virtualization software (Virtualbox).

1 Answer 1

There are some prerequisites before starting the steps.

  • Windows PC with Bluetooth adapter
  • Ubuntu installed as VirtualBox guest OS and running on Windows
  • VirtualBox Guest Additions installed on Ubuntu guest OS
  • Disable Bluetooth adapter on Windows 1.1. Launch Device Manager. (Right-click on the Windows icon at the bottom left corner of the desktop, then select Device Manager.) enter image description here 1.2. Disable Bluetooth adapter (right-click on your Bluetooth device and select Disable device by toggling Enable/Disable device.) enter image description here
  • Launch Ubuntu 2.1. Launch Oracle VM VirtualBox. 2.2. Select your Ubuntu guest and click on the Start icon in the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager window. enter image description here
  • Enable Bluetooth Adapter on Windows Go back to Device Manager, enable the Bluetooth adapter. (Right-click on the Bluetooth device and select Enable device.) enter image description here
  • Enable Bluetooth adapter on Ubuntu (Guest OS) 4.1. In Oracle VM VirtualBox window, select Devices ->USB from the top menu bar. 4.2. Then select Bluetooth adapter to enable. enter image description here
  • Verify Check if Bluetooth is enabled in Ubuntu by typing the following command.

If everything is fine, you should be able to see something like in the below example. Be sure it says UP RUNNING (line 4 in the below example).

    $ hciconfig -a hci0: Type: BR/EDR Bus: USB BD Address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ACL MTU: 1021:7 SCO MTU: 240:3 UP RUNNING RX bytes:1039 acl:0 sco:0 events:54 errors:0 TX bytes:2435 acl:0 sco:0 commands:54 errors:0 Features: 0xff 0xfe 0x8f 0xfe 0xdb 0xff 0x7b 0x87 Packet type: DM1 DM3 DM5 DH1 DH3 DH5 HV1 HV2 HV3 Link policy: RSWITCH HOLD SNIFF Link mode: SLAVE ACCEPT Name: 'vm' Class: 0x0c0000 Service Classes: Rendering, Capturing Device Class: Miscellaneous, HCI Version: 4.0 (0x6) Revision: 0x8300 LMP Version: 4.0 (0x6) Subversion: 0x9172 Manufacturer: Marvell Technology Group Ltd.     Cant access in-built Bluetooth for Windows in Virtual Box

Do anyone know how to access in-built Bluetooth in Virtual Box. I am using Ubuntu and have installed VM(virtual box) and Windows 10 in it but somehow I am not able to access the Bluetooth. Bluetooth is not getting displayed in Device manager.

First make sure the following is correctly working:

    • The BIOS / UEFI has Bluetooth enabled (Just in case)
    • Your host (Ubuntu in this case) detects the Bluetooth correctly
    • You have tested the Bluetooth with a bluetooth device and can confirm it is working correctly. This 3 points are to avoid issues with the guest that might not be the guest at all.

Then make sure the following is correctly set up:

    • Latest VirtualBox version installed (As of this answer it is 5.1.28)
    • Latest VirtualBox Extension installed for VirtualBox (Host). This one you get either from the VirtualBox site or by upgrading from a previous Extension to the latest.
    • Latest VirtualBox Extension installed in Windows 10 (Guest). This one will show as a CD on Windows 10. Just simply install it from the Virtual CD and reboot.

This last 3 points are to make sure that the Bluetooth can be detected and used correctly in your virtual environment.

    1. Right click your USB Devices on VirtualBox (Not inside Windows 10, but on the VirtualBox bar below it) and Enable the Bluetooth device detected by VirtualBox. At this point, if you follow everything and the bluetooth does not show, on some cases it is because it can’t be in use before sharing it with VirtualBox. enter image description hereenter image description here
    2. Windows will not try to install the proper drivers for it. If the drivers are not found, I suggest going to the companies website and downloading the drivers through Windows 10 and then proceeding on installing them manually. enter image description hereenter image description here
    3. After installation click on the Bluetooth Device Manager to Pair your Windows 10 with a real device: enter image description hereenter image description here
    4. Click on the Device found that you wish to pair and then click on the Pair button that will show. enter image description here
    5. Then simply test out sending something to the device enter image description here

That’s it. So the common issues that could be found are:

    1. Missing the VirtualBox Extension (In the Host, Guest or both)
    2. Bluetooth not working on your Host, hence, it will not work on your Guest.
    3. Missing Drivers for the Bluetooth device in Windows 10

On most cases it will just work if you follow the steps. In the ones that don’t, you can solve this 3 cases by installing the corresponding package / driver for it.
