I have a question about printing with linux. I’m a root of a small office. We want to change to linux from M$, but we have some HW problem. I’ve tried with Ubuntu liveCD, and I looked up our main printer(we have 2 other supported HP printers, they works fine), but it seems to have no driver support.
The manufacturer included the M$ driver CDs, but it only contrains GDI & PCL drivers(you can find here: http://download.konicaminolta.hk/bt/eng . ntent.html with bizhub 211 / 163 Drivers header), what is supported only by M$ printing systems. This printer has scanner[TWAIN](then copier), fax, print function; it can be managed via IP, because we can connect it to a local swith/router with an UTP cable.

My questions are:
-How can I manage to work it with linux based systems?
-May I look for a linux server with virtual M$ OS with some other (haxed) printng tecnology? But how?
-Someone can write a postscript driver for this model? (The printig part[duplex support is necessary] is enough at first)

If it isn’t listed chances are it isn’t supported.

Thanks for the anwser, our printer isnt in the list, so I think it isnt supported, I try to write there too.
Any other suggestions? Anwsers?

Мы уже упоминали невысокую стоимость МФУ линейки Bizhub. Достигается она вовсе не применением дешевых материалов, а самыми что ни на есть высокотехнологичными средствами. Дело в том, что принтеры Bizhub 163 и 211 работают с помощью так называемого GDI-контроллера, а сканер – под TWAIN-драйвером. Для неискушенного человека звучит совершенно непонятно, однако всё довольно просто. GDI (Graphic Device Interface) для принтеров и TWAIN (Tool Without An Interesting Name) для сканеров – специальные программные средства, позволяющие задавать и управлять большинством функций устройств непосредственно из операционной системы Windows. То есть часть «внутренней работы» принтера и сканера берет на себя компьютер. В результате отпадает необходимость использовать в самих устройствах дорогостоящие процессоры – можно обойтись простыми контроллерами. Кстати, контроллеры Bizhub’ов поддерживаются драйверами в том числе и для Windows Vista.

Другими словами — это «недопринтер», устройство, в котором нет «мозгов» — их заменяет этот самый GDI-драйвер, который занимается растрированием картинки и отправляет в аппарат непосредственно команды всяким моторам и клачам этого недопринтера. Есть еще один «камень» — этот драйвер достаточно прожорливый и требует реал-таймового приоритета выполнения.
Где-то на просторах гугля находил рецепт подключения какого-то киосеровского GDI-принтера под линукс, но это было года 2 назад.
На будущее: если вдруг придется выбирать принтер для печати из-под ОС НЕ семейства M$ — обратите внимание на поддержку языков описания страниц (таких, как PCL5/PCL5e/PCL6/PS/PS3). Если принтер ничего этого не умеет — готовьте бубен.
