1. Запускаем веб-обозреватель и кликаем по кнопке с тремя горизонтальными полосками.
2. В появившемся меню выбираем пункт «Настройки» (Preferences).
3. Откроется страница параметров. Проматываем ее до блока с названием «Обновления Firefox» (Updates).
4. Нажимаем на кнопку начала проверки, если она доступна.
5. Запускаем процедуру установки актуальной версии браузера.
6. Подтверждаем ее выполнение.

Hi
Firefox asked me to update their software, When I follow instructions it does not update for me as it said it would.
Have downloaded file and it is called: /home/charles7/Downloads/firefox-64.0.tar.bz2

What is instruction to place in terminal to run this ?

Have you ever replaced the Firefox software, which comes pre-installed with Linux Mint 17, by the genuine Mozilla Firefox software for Linux?

The Firefox software, which comes pre-installed with Linux Mint 17, will never ask you to update Firefox. It does not have to, because the Linux Mint Update Manager will take care of any available Firefox software update and offer it to you for installation.
This is provided you care to open the Update Manager (shield icon in the bottom panel), inspect the list of available updates and click [Install].
This is also provided you have not misconfigured the Update Manager safety levels and told Update Manager to display and install only updates of safety levels 1 + 2. Firefox was level 3 on Mint 17.

So back to the initial question:
Are you using the pre-installed Firefox? Or are you using the genuine Mozilla Firefox?

The answer to your question how to proceed with the downloaded Mozilla .tar.bz2 archive file firefox-64.0.tar.bz2 depends on
+ whether you need it at all
+ if you do, it depends on the directory to which you have installed the current older Firefox

You might like to post the screen output of the following terminal command, please. It will tell which (Linux Mint pre-installed) Firefox version is present on your disk.

I think that I went with Firefox preinstall with the original install of Linux Mint17 . Cannot be sure though.

I ran the code and got this result.

Can you tell from that what I have ?

Just been going over what is happening. You are correct Firefox is not asking for update, but Facebook asking to update. See attached.

Facebook definately going a bit slower these days. What is best way to clean up?

The currently installed Firefox seems to be stuck at version 49.0.2.
You can confirm that this is the Firefox which you are using by going to «Help» => «About Firefox» inside Firefox itself. It will display its version.

As the command apt-cache reveals, your system «knows» that Firefox 64.0+linuxmint2+rosa (installation candidate) is available, but currently installed is still Firefox 49.0.2+linuxmint1+rosa.

The question raises why this is so.

Please, open Update Manager (shield icon in the bottom panel).
Under Preferences make sure that at minimum the safety levels 1, 2 and 3 are marked as visible and safe to install.
Then click the [Refresh] button.

Does Update Manager now offer Firefox 64.0 for installation?
If it does, click [Install]
If it does not, then check whether you have put Firefox on the Update Manager blacklist. Provided you have, remove it from the blacklist. Click [Refresh]. Does Update Manager now offer Firefox 64.0 for installation? If it does, click [Install]

I am in New Zealand, hence the delay in replys etc. (10.00 am here on Thursday.)

Did as you advised and opened update manager. 64 was offerred so I ‘Installed Update’. Went well.

Have to rush in to the city will get back to you later in the day as regards Facebook and if I can access etc.

By the way on the list of Update Manager there is 4 entries of #4 and #5 on the end. Do I do anything with these ? See attachment.

My first questions would be:

• Are you using Firefox 64 now?
• Is everything working as it should after installing 64 software updates?

About your question on what to do with level 4 and 5 updates, Xorg update, firmware update and the 2 kernel updates:

If your Linux Mint is working as it should, then I tend to suggest to ignore these 4 updates.
Reason:
Linux Mint 17.x will reach the end of its supported life on April 30th, 2019. This means after that day, Linux Mint 17.x will no longer be maintained by its developers. The underlying Ubuntu 14.04 will no longer be maintained by its developers. As a consequence, Mint 17.x will not receive any further bugfixes after April 30th, 2019.
As Linux Mint 17.x is nearing the end of its supported lifetime, my advice would be starting to think about the question to which new Mint release you would like to upgrade.
Download e.g. Mint 19.1. Create a bootable live- and installation medium (USB pendrive or DVD, whichever is appropriate for your machine) and find out whether Mint 19.1 works correctly on your machine.
Provided it does, plan the steps how to upgrade your Mint 17.x to Mint 19.1.

In case you prefer making sure that for the rest of its supported lifetime, your Mint 17.x uses the most recent Xorg software, the up-to-date firmware and the up-to-date kernel, then my advice on how to install them would be like this:

• Install the Xorg update (level 4) and reboot after the installation has finished.
  Does Mint 17 still work correctly after the reboot?
  In case it does, proceed with the next step.
• Install the 2 level 5 linux packages (linux and linux-kernel). Reboot after the installation has finished.
  Does Mint 17 still work correctly after the reboot?
  In case it does, proceed with the next step.
• Install the linux-firmware update. Reboot. — Hoping that after the reboot Mint 17 still works correctly.

On my Mint 17 I had installed all these updates, and it continued to work as it should.
