How to enable AMD Turbo Core on Ubuntu 14.04?

I’m using Ubuntu 14.04 (3.13.0-24-generic kernel) on AMD A8-4500m based laptop, and I’ve recently noticed, that AMD Turbo Core is not working at all. Everything works on Windows, however, on Linux CPU frequency can’t get past 1.9 GHz (checked with cpufreq-aperf ). Here is output of cpupower frequency-info , notice Active: no under boost state support:

EDIT: It seems like Trinity series processors have it’s own BAPM switch in source. It’s located in drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/trinity_dpm.c and it’s (at the time of writing) enabled only for MSI boards, because of stability issues. To enable it, open this file, find this line:

Change false to true, then compile and install new kernel. You should get a kernel panic boost working now. Keep in mind that CPU power is also shared with GPU, so you’ll almost never get the highest frequency available if GPU is also in use.

Linux has been working great, even with optimus management, which has just been great.

That said, I just got around to managing CPU frequencies and governors; for that, I am using cpupower and cpupower-gui.

I couldn’t help but notice that my maximum available cpu frequency was 3200MHz, which is way below what my cpu is capable of doing. I did some digging, and have enabled the boost flag in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/boost. Before this change, the output of

Which at least means that I got cpupower to recognize that boost is active. The problem here, however, is that there are no available boost states, which makes the change entirely a symbolic one.

Is there a way for me to enable boost states, or to add some?

Hi! I got an AMD A8-5545M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics and I think it’s not using Turbo Boost.

In here it shows ‘Active: no’ and while I was looking for a solution to this problem I noticed some users have ‘Active: yes’

I tried:
cpupower frequency-set -g performance
cpupower frequency-set -g userspace
cpupower frequency-set -u 2.7GHz
cpupower frequency-set -f 2.7GHz

And in the end, it never goes beyond 1.7GHz

I know this CPU supports Turbo Boost as these pages show:

never goes beyond 1700MHz even though htop can reveal processors at 100%

I also saw the file:
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/boost
but the value 1 was already there.

Can someone help me getting Turbo Boost to work? Thank you!

My BIOS doesn’t have an option to set Turbo.

hi, I you are really sure that your MB has Turbo Boost feature you can confirm if is enable with:

I only have the max freq in bios settings when using Cool ‘n Quiet enable that is 4000 MHz but with «cpupower monitor» command I have the real, and the real freq goes up to 4400 MHz.

Включение и отключение Turbo Boost в Linux

Бывает нужно отключить Turbo Boost или наоборот включить его, так же узнать текущие состояние. В Linux это можно сделать без перезагрузки в BIOS. Мы рассмотрим с помощью каких команд узнать текущие состояние, так же изменим режим работы процессора с «энергосбережение» на «производительность», что заставит процессор работать более эффективно.

1. Текущие состояние Turbo Boost и его смена.

Установим необходимый пакет

Проверим текущие состоние, где -p0 — номер ядра:

1 = деактивирован
0 = активирован

rdmsr:open: No such file or directory

Нужно загрузить модуль msr в ядро:

Далее можно правя регистры включать или отключать Turbo Boost, но чтобы было проще, я нашел скрипт, который активирует или деактивирует его, без запоминания сложных регистров. Назовем его turbo-boost.sh:

2. Управление режимом питания процессора, если используется intel_pstate:

Установим утилиту cpupower:

apt install linux-cpupower

Узнать текущие состояние 1-го ядра:

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor

Возможные варианты: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/cpu-freq/governors.txt.

Нас интересует режим performance, так как он дает наибольшую производительность. У вас возможно стоит powersave, как было у меня, поэтому сменим его.

cpupower frequency-set -g performance

На этом все, мы включили Turbo Boost и переключили режим работы процессора на максимальную производительность, так как нам нет смысла экономить электроэнергию на арендованом сервере в Дата Центре.

Еще дам команду, с помощью которой можно наблюдать за изменением частоты ядер процессора:

watch grep \"cpu MHz\" /proc/cpuinfo
