How can I know my memory’s «actual frequency» in ubuntu?

I bought some memory stick which is ovcerclockable. The default frequency is 2.4GHz, the frequency can be configured up to 3.6GHz. And I confiured frequency and the voltage in BIOS, set the frequency to 3.6GHz. Then I ran the memtester86 8.1, to test if overclocking is stable, and it passed all test with no error on 3.6 GHz. Finally, I entery the OS(my OS version is 18.04),and execue sudo dmidecode —type 17 | grep -i speed , it shows like below:

I wonder which is the «actual» frequency of my memory? Did I overclocking success? And I tried another command, sudo lshw -short -C memory , and it shows this:

How to find the frequency and type of my current RAM?

It should, and it does for me: on my computer, two of the lines read «4GiB DIMM DDR3 Synchronous 1333 MHz (0.8 ns)» (corresponding to the two RAM slots where I have RAM installed). Did you look closely?

sudo lshw -C memory > info.txt Not sure, it won’t display on my terminal, but if I pipe it to a file it shows.

This did not display the frequency for me in Ubuntu 15.04. Likely hardware dependent. Solution by Henrique worked though.

Use the lshw command with the memory class:

As you can see, I’m using DDR3 1600MHz RAM.

This is for a server with ECC memory (as can be seen from the Error Correction Type field and the difference between Data Width and Total Width ).

Both tools are dependencies of the ubuntu-standard package and should be available by default on all Ubuntu systems. There used to be another tool called hwinfo , which is no longer available for Ubuntu since 13.10.

How to check RAM timings in linux?

In windows, CPUz provides info about memory timings. Is it possible to view that in linux? Is there any app that can show me the memory timings of the RAM currently installed in my system? EDIT: I want to know the CAS latency. CPUz screenshot:

Memtest will show you the timings and I found on the ubuntuforums that i2c-tools will give you what you’re looking for with these commands:

sudo modprobe eeprom decode-dimms

You can get information about the memory with:

In particular, you can get the clock speed and latency with:

lshw -C memory | grep clock 

That 1.9 ns is the clock interval, not the latency. This tool is reading DMI, you’d need something that reads SPD.

The tool actually reports memory capabilities, not the effective clock. For instance, on my hardware (motherboard supports memory clock up to 1600 MHz) it reports: clock: 2133MHz (0.5ns) (which is the maximum speed my DDR modules can operate at, provided they’re plugged in a more modern MB).

decode-dimms needs the correct module to be loaded to be able to read the DIMMs. It is unclear to me exactly which one worked for me, but I guess it depends on the chipset in your machine.
