Linux dhcp start failed

Why can’t I start isc-dhcp-server upon installation?

I’m following this tutorial to install Linux in a system that does not have CD reader nor USB boot capabilities. Eventually, I reached the point where I had to install isc-dhcp-server and I did, sort of. Apt tells me that there’s one partially installed package. I run sudo apt-get install -f and I get the following:

Job for isc-dhcp-server.service failed. See 'systemctl status isc-dhcp server.service' and 'journalctl -xn' for details. invoke-rc.d: initscript isc-dhcp-server, action "start" failed. dpkg: error processing package isc-dhcp-server (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: isc-dhcp-server E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

If I do /etc/init.d/isc-dhcp-server start the prompt consists of the first two lines of the same message. Output from sudo systemctl status isc-dhcp-server :

Debian 8 DHCP Server error «Failed to start LSB: DHCP Server

#1 Post by BorrowedByte » 2017-10-23 09:06

I installed Debian 8 on Virtual Box and also updated and upgraded, but when I install DHCP and edited the files with my config, when i try to do a «service isc-dhcp-server restart» i got this message «Failed to start LSB: DHCP Server».
I had tried my config and also diferent ones from tutorials on youtube, and keeps doing the same.

What could be the problem please? Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, for starters, check the relevant logs and post here whatever may look relevant.
Then we take it from there..

It seems to me that you’re trying to run a DHCP server on an interface that is configurerd with DHCP. You have mixed up the configuration of your network card, as defined in /etc/network/interfaces.

iface eth0 inet dhcp address .. netmask ..

You should replace the «dhcp» with «static» (and restart the interface).

My guess is that the dhcp-client takes the interface, so that the dhcp-server can not.

Problem configuring dhcp server: Job failed to start

I m trying to configure dhcp server in ubtuntu onto my virtual box and connecting other virtual instance of ubuntu to this dhcp sever i have installed dhcp server using sudo apt-get isc-dhcp-server then i went to /etc/networks/interfaces and wrote this

auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.254 broadcast 192.168.1.255 dns-nameserver 192.168.1.254 dns-search lan

i then restarted networking service using sudo service networking restart suddenly my GUI crashed and hanged and all that stuff, which forced me to reboot the system. i checked for ip which showed me that i had got it. then i went to /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server and made this change INTERFACES=»eth0″ then i went to /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf and wrote the following lines

ddns-update-style none; default-lease-time 600; max-lease-time 7200; authoritative; log-facility local7; option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255; option routers 192.168.1.254; option domain-name-servers-192.168.2.1; option domain-name "ttc.com"; subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0

i restarted the service using sudo services isc-dhcp-server but it says: stop: unknown instance: start: Job failed to start i also tried to start dhcp server using the command sudo service isc-dhcp-server start but when i tried sudo start isc-dhcp-server or sudo status isc-dhcp-server it shows me an error of iscinitctl: Unable to connect to system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket. No such file or directory. i don’t know what to do now so please give me some guidence solving this error. I would like to provide more details i needed.
