Overview [ edit ]

xemu is an active fork of the XQEMU project, which is based on the very popular and highly actively maintained QEMU full system emulator project. xemu is an low-level, full-system emulator which emulates the actual hardware of the Xbox. It is the best Xbox emulator around, and can play 5x more playable titles than Cxbx-Reloaded with better performance than XQEMU.

Compatibility [ edit ]

The announcements thread in the official Discord channel of this xemu emulator (see external links below) regularly posts updates on progress of user tests and compatibility levels.

Setting up [ edit ]

In order to actually run xemu, you must have a copy of the stuff that a real Xbox needs when it turns on, check out the getting started section on the official wiki for instructions. The real MCPX and flash ROM are required, but one can still boot and play games using the dummy dashboard HDD image.

Unlike all other Xbox emulators (with the exception of XQEMU), xemu will only load games as disk images in the ISO format. Redump ISOs currently must be adjusted slightly by using the instructions in the Disc Images guide. Games as extracted folders in the «HDD Ready» format can be converted to ISOs using extract-xiso. It is also possible to install a custom dashboard such as UnleashX that supports installing and loading the games from the emulated hard drive.

About

xemu is free and open-source software that emulates the original Microsoft Xbox game console, enabling people to play their original Xbox games on Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.

This project is for educational purposes only, with the goal of researching and understanding the inner-workings of the original Xbox and its games, and then building a platform to play those legally purchased games.

This project does not endorse or promote copyright infringement of any kind. Developers work with legal backups of their own physical media and encourage all users to do the same. Piracy is not tolerated on any communication channel.

System Requirements¶

xemu runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. An OpenGL 4.0-compatible GPU is required. Most recent integrated GPUs will work.

Please note that xemu is an evolving project and, although xemu can run on large number of systems, actual game performance is in flux and will vary based on the characteristics of your system.

Compatibility¶

xemu emulates the hardware of the original Xbox, and in doing so is intended to be compatible with all software that can run on real original Xbox hardware, including official release titles and homebrew applications.

The xemu compatibility tracking system tracks compatibility of official release titles. Title compatibility status is provided by volunteer reporters in the community, as the reporter experienced the title in the current version of xemu on their computer at time of reporting. As the project evolves, reports may need to be updated. You are invited to help improve the project by submitting an updated compatibility report. Join the Discord server to learn how to contribute!

License¶

xemu is free and open source software. Binaries and source of xemu are made available under the terms of the GNU General Public License, version 2.

xemu depends on several great open source libraries. Each distribution of xemu includes a LICENSE.txt file which includes specific license information for relevant libraries.

Open Source Development¶

xemu is developed on GitHub at https://github.com/xemu-project/xemu. Contributions are welcome! See here for xemu development documentation.

History¶

The xemu project is a continuation of the XQEMU project. The XQEMU project was started by espes in 2012 with significant contributions from Jannik Vogel (JayFoxRox), Matt Borgerson (mborgerson), and others. The xemu project was started by Matt Borgerson in 2020 and has since also received many contributions from others.

Download

Simply download the Zip archive release for Windows from the link above, extract the archive to a directory, then double-click on xemu.exe.

Download for macOS¶

Apple Silicon Compatibility Note

This release is a «Universal» binary, and will work on both Intel x86-64 and the new Apple Silicon (M1+) Mac computers.

Install Manually¶

Simply download the Zip archive release for macOS from the link above, extract the archive, then run the application. Optionally drag the xemu app bundle to your Applications folder.

Because the app is not signed, you will need to right-click, or hold the control key and click, on the app and in the context menu that appears select Open on first launch.

Install via Homebrew¶

If you have the Homebrew package manager installed, you can install xemu with:

Download for Linux¶

There are multiple options for running xemu on your Linux system.

AppImage¶

Supported architectures: x86_64

The AppImage file needs to be marked executable before it can be run. You can do this in your file browser: navigate to and select the AppImage file, right-click and open file properties, navigate to permissions tab, then enable ‘Allow executing file as program’. You can also do this in a terminal, simply with chmod +x *.AppImage . Once the AppImage is marked executable it can be ‘double-clicked’ on to start xemu. See AppImage documentation for more information about running AppImages and further system integration.

Flatpak¶

Supported architectures: x86_64 and aarch64

flatpak install -y app.xemu.xemu

When using the flatpak installation method, only the ~/.var/app/app.xemu.xemu/data/xemu/xemu directory can be written to by xemu. The Hard Disk image must be placed there, for example at ~/.var/app/app.xemu.xemu/data/xemu/xemu/xbox_hdd.qcow2 .

If you want to whitelist additional directories, you can do so with Flatseal.

Ubuntu PPA¶

Supported architectures: x86_64 and aarch64

Users running recent versions of Ubuntu (20.04 and newer) are recommended to install through the daily build PPA repository. At the command line, run the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mborgerson/xemu sudo apt update sudo apt install xemu

You can now launch xemu through your typical launcher, or by typing xemu at the command line.

Build from source¶

On most Linux distributions, it is also possible to build from source.

Previous Releases¶

You can find older builds of xemu on the Releases page.

A free and open-source application that emulates the original Microsoft Xbox game console. Supports connecting up to 4 controllers for local play, networking for multiplayer, resolution scaling, and more.

Only «$HOME/.var/app/app.xemu.xemu/data/xemu/xemu» can be written by xemu. The Hard Disk image has to be placed there, for example, at «$HOME/.var/app/app.xemu.xemu/data/xemu/xemu/xbox_hdd.qcow2».

Changes in version v0.7.98
