Linux for core 2 duo

Which Linux Distros is best for intel core 2 duo processor with ram 2 gb?

Advanced power management and thermal properties are essential to high performance computing and servers. Synology DS918+ uses Intel Celeron J3455, and WD PR4100 uses Intel Pentium N3710.

Which Linux Distros is best for intel core 2 duo processor with ram 2 gb?

I will be installing Linux in my system which is a very old system and I will use it for casual work and basic programming . Configuration:

processor Intel core 2 duo E7400 2.80 GH;
Ram 2 GB Disk 500 GB

I am already using Ubuntu 19 in my laptop .So I want to try something new , lite and faster os . I will remove windows completely and install Linux. Suggest OS that works fast in this configuration and does not freeze up.

Do give some best suggestion of any linux distros apart from ubuntu 19

Use Lubuntu with its lightweight LXDE desktop.

I’ve used it last year, and it worked smoothly on an old netbook such as yours.
What didn’t work properly was recognizing the latest WLAN (WPA2 authentication, VPN stuff). Simple WLAN setups work, and anything works eventually from the command line, but don’t expect the GUI tools (that sit in the statusbar) to recognize the latest and greatest enterprise-grade stuff.

I have experimented a lot with my old Acer Extensa 5690EZ (4 GB RAM, Core2Duo). The only modern OS I can recommend you is FreeBSD 32bit. Your 2GB RAM will suffice if you go for 32bit, even if you open a dozen of tabs on Firefox. FreeBSD is lighter on CPU and RAM than Linux.

When installing FreeBSD, choose UFS1 file system and discard soft updates (SU) in «Options». When watching YouTube (set 240p-360p quality) your CPU will show only ca 21-23% load max. As desktop you better choose Lxde or Mate. OpenOffice runs on low end machines snappier than LibreOffice. VLC didn’t run well at first, so I use SMPlayer instead.

Last but not least, FreeBSD delivers shier fantastic sound compared to Windows or Linux, and has a reasonable fonts rendering out of the box (google for «freebsd graphics», install «drm-kmod»).

I’d stick with Ubuntu just to make your life easier since you have learned that package management, etc. Just get rid of Gnome3/Unity and install a lighter weight desktop like one of the *box variants or Xfce

I would recommend Linux Mint Mate

It works like charm on old computers. An alternative is Linux Mint Xfce which is even a bit less resource requiring.

What is the difference between an Intel i7 and a Xeon quad core processor?

I know the Xeon processors have been around for a long time and are mostly used in servers, but I am curious, why do people not use the Xeons in a high performance desktop?

As far as I know about the best desktop processor out there now is the Intel Core i7 line. The i7’s and Xeons are both quad-core processors, what is the main difference in these? I just saw that the MacBook Pro’s are using the quad core Xeons instead of the i7’s.

The current line of Xeons are based on the same architecture as the i7. The difference is usually that the Xeons are the cream of the crop. They run cooler and at lower voltages and are spec’d for 24/7 continuous usage. Otherwise, performance is usually identical. Xeons are able to be used in multi-socket motherboards, where i7s are not (which is why the Mac Pros use them).

Xeons are also usually the first to be updated. There are 6-core Xeons, but not i7s yet, though they are still based on the same architecture.

The additional reliability of the Xeons is very important in servers, especially rackmount and blade-enclosed servers where the lower heat dissipation and power consumption are essential. These benefits usually don’t mean too much to all but the most extreme overclockers though, so people in the desktop segment usually ignore it due to the enormous difference in the price of both the CPU and the motherboards needed to support them.

Another difference between Xeon and i7 is that the Xeon supports ECC memory, the i7 does not.

Also, some Xeons are designed to work in multi-CPU systems, whereas absolutely no i7 models do. As such, if you want a multi-CPU system, you must use nothing less than a Xeon.

why do people not use the Xeons in a high performance desktop?

They do, but they’re referred to as «Workstations».

Workstations are essentially a server, but with expansion abilities more like a desktop.

You get all the benefits of a server (symmetric multiprocessing, stability, management, hot-swap, etc.) plus the things you wouldn’t normally have in a server, like video card(s).

Check out Intel’s Workstation pages to find out about their current Workstation boards like the S5000XVN, S5520SC, and WX58BP.

We’ve been building systems like these (SMP Xeon workstations) for years for AutoCAD usage at many clients, and for various number crunching machines at the local university (engineering, stats, astronomy, etc.).

They’re awesome to use, and expensive. 🙂

http://ark.intel.com/ This is the intel product comparison site. You can look through and compare the different intel processor lines and see many of the design and feature differences.

In addition to what has been mentioned: Some of the Xeon’s also support a couple advanced processor features that the desktop iX processors do not. Most of these however are only relevant and useful in scientific and advanced computing needed in workstations, massive multi-processor machines, and cpu intensive applications.

Advanced power management and thermal properties are essential to high performance computing and servers. In this market, electricity and cooling are significant costs. Using a certain processor that is designed for the server environment might save a company lots of $$$ each month in power bills if it can process much more efficiently. This is just one example.

Which Linux for my old laptop: Intel Pentium N3540 quad core, 4 gigs RAM

After a long research on internet, i didn’t got proper answer. So I’m writing here. I am about to install Linux distribution on my low spec laptop. I thought of installing Linux mint cinnamon 19.1. Since it is the latest one, i couldn’t be sure that whether it’s going to run smoothly or not. Currently i have Ubuntu 18.04 LTS which is quite slow. So before i download Linux mint, i want to make sure that it meats hardware requirements. Laptop Specs: Intel Pentium N3540 quad core processor(2.16GHz), 5400 RPM HDD, 4GB DDR3L Ram(1333MHz)

So can this one run Linux mint 19.1 cinnamon smoothly? If not, may Mate work fine? Thanks..

Based on several laptops with similar specs, Lubuntu is not too bad. The hardware support for Lubuntu compiled for x86 tends to be more stable on old laptops than AMD64 is. So for minimal frustration try Lubuntu for x86 .

NAS configuration and Intel Celeron better than Pentium?

While choosing a NAS, I came across the Synology DS918+ and WD PR4100. Synology DS918+ uses Intel Celeron J3455, and WD PR4100 uses Intel Pentium N3710. Celeron is 1.5GHz burst to 2.3, while Pentium is 1.6 burst to 2.56. Both are quad core. This is their comparison.

While it is common from the numbers and from the model to think Pentium is better than Celeron, the numbers tell otherwise. The benchmark shows that Celeron may be 50% better performance than the Pentium. Both are released in 2016, so we are not comparing a Celeron in 2016 to a Pentium in 2009. What is this about?

You can see on Intel ARK (your comparison link) that Celeron has higher TDP: 10 W for Celeron J3455 vs. 6 W for Pentium N3710. In layman’s terms this means that this particular Celeron was designed to consume and dissipate higher amount of power than this particular Pentium. This will obviously result in slightly higher power consumption, but larger power budget also allows for better performance.

Both processors have the same number of similar cores, but they must have been designed to stay within their different power budgets when under full load. In this benchmark comparison you can see that both CPUs have similar single core performance. When only a single core is under load, CPU has some power headroom, so the core can actually boost to advertised frequency. When more cores are in use, CPU hits the power limit and is more conservative in its frequency management. N3710’s TDP is lower, hence it’s less performant under high load.

Дистрибутив Linux для Intel Core 2 Duo (IA64)

Intel Core 2 Duo (IA64)

Intel Core 2 Duo (IA64)

Да, amd64.. В принципе, да, что касается архитектуры, другое дело, какое там ещё железо, и где его поддержка лучше..

Re: Дистрибутив Linux для Intel Core 2 Duo (IA64)

обычный RHEL4 вполне нормально работает на моем 6400.
