GooglePlusBot was originally used to generate link previews on Google Plus, but is now used for other use-cases like generating previews for links in SMS messages on Android (see fnando/browser#515 for additional context). The library doesn’t tag this as a bot despite it being one.

Hello, I received this email today. It says «We noticed a login from a device you don’t usually use. Linux · GooglePlusBot · Unknown location».

I have enabled 2FA for both my Facebook and Instagram, also have SMS authenticator enabled.

Should I worry about it? I wanted to reach «Instagram» support, but seems like they have grown up another big corporation that doesn’t have any humans to contact and in fact, I couldn’t even find any way to contact them, so I’m posting here.

I also googled this problem and seems like users from Russia were also getting this problem, but their location was California, Mountain View and I’m not from Russia.

Anyone having this problem besides me?

P.S. Also, I see that this forum uses my real name and I’m not comfortable with that. Can anyone from mods/admins help me to change my nickname?

Are you certain the email was legit? What’s the exact email address that’s sending you that email? This could easily be a phishing attack.

Yes, I think it was legit from Instagram. Sender email was «ecurity@mail.instagram.com».

This is the thread I found about it, but unlike them it doesn’t say about location that it was from Mountain View, CA, mine says unknown location and also, like I said, I’m not from Russia and in that link, seems like only Russians were having this weird problem.

Also, I didn’t notice any change or anything in my account and obviously I was able to login in my account and as soon as I logged in, changed my password.

I don’t know what to think, maybe it’s some kind of glitch on Instagram/Facebook? Few months ago I had a similar problem, but on Google. I got some new phone login in my Google devices and after some research and forum help, we found out some emulator program on PC was making this glitch. I’m thinking probably this is also something like that, because my accounts are very protected, I’m cautious person and if website offers 2FA in settings, I always enable it.

Nuevo inicio de sesión en Instagram desde GooglePlusBot en Linux: ¿Qué está pasando?

Una parte de esta red social llamada «GooglePlusBot» fue detectada intentando iniciar sesión en la cuenta de Instagram de varios usuarios en los últimos meses sin ningún tipo de razón aparente, lo cual da a pensar que se trata de un hackeo.

Las personas a las que «atacó» este bot de Google+ recibieron un sorpresivo correo de Instagram donde se les notificaba acerca de un «nuevo inicio de sesión en Instagram desde GooglePlusBot en Linux«. Recibir este tipo de correos ya de por sí causa cierto temor, pero cuando es un bot de Google el que está intentando robar tu cuenta de Instagram la cuestión se vuelve más intrigante.

Por suerte, la explicación a esta curiosa alerta de inicio sesión es menos escalofriante de lo que imaginas. A continuación, te contamos por qué estás recibiendo este correo y qué debes hacer para evitarlo.

¿Por qué GooglePlusBot quiere entrar en tu Instagram?

• Abre la app Mensajes de Google.
• Toca los tres puntos de la esquina superior derecha.
• Selecciona Configuración.
• Entra en Vistas previas automáticas.
• Desactiva las opciones Mostrar todas las vistas previas y Mostrar solo las vistas previas de los vínculos web.

Así, debería dejar de generarse la alerta de inicio de sesión en Instagram cuando restablezcas la contraseña. Adicionalmente, por razones de seguridad, activa la verificación en dos pasos de Instagram, aunque lo más recomendable sería usar una app de autenticación como Google Authenticator.

Si tu problema era solo GooglePlusBot, no tienes que preocuparte por nada más, pues este bot es totalmente inofensivo. No obstante, que este susto te sirva para recordar que debes blindar la seguridad de tu cuenta de Instagram como te explicamos antes.
