Installation issues: Linux Mint on Intel NUC

Post by Shadow_Plox » Fri May 17, 2019 2:09 pm

Need some assistance with installing Linux Mint 19.1 on a NUC (Intel NUC7CJYH), i cannot seem to boot Linux from the USB, it works fine with Windows 10, which i managed to install using bootable USB, but it does not want to boot linux mint.

I have tried the following:

— Secure boot off
— Made a Bootable USB with YUMI (Tried both standard and UEFI versions)
— Boot USB is enabled in bios.
— OS option is Linux
— Currently on latest bios version (0049)

I did some research and a lot of sites advise to check for a legacy setting and disable UEFI Boot.
I am however unable to turn off UEFI Boot as the option is grey out.

Played around with various BIOS settings, but to no avail did have i managed to get Linux to boot.

I checked the BIOS release notes, and seems with release 0037, they removed the legacy option.

Is it possible to still get Mint installed ?, or is it possible to downgrade the BIOS to an earlier version, and how safe is this to do ?

Any help will greatly be appreciated, maybe someone with the same NUC and recent bios can just send me a screenshot of what the BIOS settings need to be, or assist me in getting Linux to boot.

Hello
I have had LM19.1 installed on NUC7CJYH after initially only being able to install Ubuntu.
My first NUC was faulty and replaced.
I use LM19.1 on a USB stick made on another Mint machine using the main menu and usb disk formatter and usb image creator.
USB sticks made like this always work.
In the NUC bios I turn off secure boot, disable network boot and tick boot from usb.
For the operating system there is a drop down menu allowing Linux to be selected in lieu of Windows — I don’t know if it makes any difference.
Plug in the usb stick and press the power on button and Mint eventually boots — a little slower than expected but somehow it sorts itself out.
After booting and having the mint screen with the install icon press the icon and after this is where I have been stuck for hours trying to sort out what method to us in the installation as the NUC seems to be UEFI only.
In the bios in my NUC, Legacy is shown but no way to activate it — not greyed out just no access.
For a number of years on former Mint versions I have been partitioning my HDD with a small /boot partition, 30GB / partition, large /Home partition and a 4GB swap partition. This has served me well and worked perfectly.
When I do this on the NUC with LM19.1 and either exercise or not exercise the Force UEFI function in the «install something else window» it seems to install but when I try to boot without the usb stick the NUC says «unable to detect installed bootable media» or words to that effect.
The other day I bought a new 480GB SSD to increase storage and tried to reinstall with the above results — very frustrating to say the least!
A short time ago I put in a sacrificial HDD and tried installing LM19.1 again just letting Mint do what it wanted to and forcing UEFI.
To my surprise it worked and booted after removing the usb stick.
Using Gparted I looked at the HDD and saw that there were 2 partitions, the first a small 512MB FAT32 partition labelled efi/boot? (from memory) and a second ext4 / partition for the rest of the drive.
Both these partitions have a key symbol immediately after the partition number and I do not seem to be able to do much with the partition.
I would prefer to use my original partitioning system but at the moment this is working.
I will experiment further to see what happens but these NUCs are or seem strange.

Hello All
Further to my last post the following is a better explanation of how to install LM19.x on the NUC

How to Install Mint 19.1 on NUC7CJYH 20/7/2019
Bios Ver: JYGLKCPX.86A.0031.2018.0301.1357
Ram 8GB

The NUC is a UEFI machine only. The ability to use legacy bios has been deactivated even though it seems to be there somewhere..

Press F2 on startup to enter bios setup
In “Home Boot Order” Tab
Click Advanced then Boot Configuration
Click OS Selection down arrow and select Linux (default is Windows)
Select Boot USB Devices First
In Boot Devices Window
Check USB and Optical (if you have DVD drive)
Disable Network boot
In Secure Boot Tab
Deselect secure boot
F10 save and exit

Installing Mint
Make a bootable Mint usb stick using the USB Stick Formatter and USB Image Writer from the Main Menu of a Mint installation. (Other methods of making a bootable usb stick have produced variable results for me.)

You now have to determine what partitioning (if any) that you want.

Use GParted to check target HDD and make one large active partition.
If no further partitioning required proceed to Install Linux.

If custom partitioning required make:
First partition (approx) 512MB FAT32
Second Partition 30GB Ext 4
Third Partition remainder of HDD Ext 4

Proceed to Install Linux Mint

In the install process there is a window which gives the option to Force UEFI or Back to allow “bios compatibility mode”. You MUST use “Continue in UEFI mode”.
If you go Back and then continue with installation it will seemingly happen correctly but after finishing and on reboot there will be a message “No bootable media detected” — so you have to start again and it will not work no matter what mounting points you make for the partition(s).

I selected “Install Third Party Drivers”

In the installation window asking How you want LM to be installed if you let LM install in the “Erase disk and install Linux Mint” it will do so and when you check the partitions on the HDD after installation you will see the First partition is 512 MB FAT32 /boot/efi and a Second partition is xxxGB (remainder of HDD) Ext 4 / partition.

If you choose “Something Else” then
Select the 512MB FAT 32 partition
Click Change
Click “do not use this partition” arrow and select EFI System Partition
Format is greyed out and mount point disappears.
Click OK
Window “write previous changes to disk”
Click Continue
next
Select 30GB Ext4 partition
Click Change
Click “do not use this partition” arrow and select Ext 4 journaling file system
Select box Format this partition
Click Mounting Point and select /
Click OK
next
Select Third EXT 4 partition (remainder of HDD)
Click Change
Click “do not use this partition” arrow and select Ext 4 journaling file system
Select box Format this partition
Click Mounting Point and select /Home
Click OK

Click Install Now and proceed with installation.

Note: There is no Swap partition required in Mint 19.x

I have used this method successfully 3 times now – it may not be totally correct but it works on my NUC .
Again, Hope it helps
Regards
Peter

Intel NUC NUC5i5RYH

Post by pmprog » Fri Mar 13, 2015 11:49 am

I recently purchased a i5 NUC (NUC5i5RYH), added 4GB RAM, and a HDD. I booted up using the Linux Mint 17 KDE DVD, which had some graphical corruptions when booting but otherwise loaded fine, and I could run the installer from the KDE desktop.

However, once I rebooted to the HDD, the login screen showed me a couple of pictures of trees, then went blank except for the mouse cursor, which changed between the arrow, and I bar (for text entry) at points on the screen. I installed LightDM, which gives me a login screen that’s usable, and I also installed XFCE and LXDE (in addition to KDE Plasma).

When I log in, I get plenty of graphical issues — like windows and menus not drawing properly — which makes it unusable. I didn’t experience this from the «live cd» bit where I started the installer.

So I followed this link to get the Intel drivers installed, but trying to run intel-linux-graphics-installer in a terminal window (because you can’t see any windows to operate X properly), it errors with some complaint about Gtk cannot open display.

I also tried installing LXDM, but that didn’t really help either. I’ve even installed OpenSuSE too, but that had the same graphic corruption.

So it feels like drivers linked to the graphics card, but I don’t know why the boot DVD seemed to work okay, but the install didn’t, or how to fix it.

It also confuses me, because this document says to run the graphic installer from the terminal, but why would it need Gtk then?

Any ideas on what might be wrong, or how I can fix it?

Linux Mint on 7th Gen Intel NUC (Solved)

Post by alexa9 » Thu Jan 25, 2018 10:34 pm

Anyone use the Intel NUC for Linux Mint?
I heard some people ran into some issues with installing it on the older generation NUC’s.

The NUC is a great micro PC with everything except hard drive and memory (no option for graphics card though).
Most people I would guess install Windows on it.

If you read the posts and the linked threads in those posts,, you will see that a number of people have had easy success.

If you don’t currently have an installation issue by virtue of not having tried to install LM 18.3 then try it. If you have an issue trying to install, describe the issue.
