19.3 MATE: Stuck on black screen with blinking cursor after Mint logo [RESOLVED]

Post by jehuty » Fri May 08, 2020 4:57 pm

Hi, running Linux Mint 19.3 MATE and just living a normal life. Haven’t installed anything or changed any config in the last few days. I did my daily restart of the computer, and now get only a blinking cursor after the Mint logo disappears. Waiting doesn’t appear to do anything. Can’t enter host OS at all. What info do I need to provide to start troubleshooting this?

I’m writing from my Linux Mint install USB so some of the info here isn’t going to correspond to the host OS.

linux mint Xfce boots to black screen with cursor

Post by mintuser192 » Sat Apr 23, 2022 10:10 pm

I have a bit of a commo problem, but mine seems to be a bit different from the results i’ve seen from google and i don’t know how to phrase it otherwise.

For starters, i am not using the most linux-optimized device. It is an HP Pavilion 15-ec2xxx or something similar, basically it has a nvidia card.

So i have been using linux mint live as a daily driver for some time now, falling back to windows when i need to use something like photoshop. After downloadong a program that doesn’t work, i decided to install on bare metal.

I used etcher and an old 20.2 iso on to a spare usb drive and overwrote my windows install completely. (after backing up files of course!)

Now, things the first time around went absolutely fine. It booted to a black screen. alt+f1 worked and i went to a terminal, and using ubuntu-drivers install (i used autoinstall my first time) fixed it and it booted normally.

Then while trying to install drivers for my wifi card as i did on the live system, for some reason it did something that completely removed my access to ethernet or wifi. I thought «eh, this is a fresh install anyway, guess i’ll just reinstall and try again.»

So this time i downloaded 20.3 and etched it onto the usb drive, then did the exact same thing as the first install.

I loaded it up, black screen. Anticipating the need to do this later, i also did apt update and apt full-upgrade as well as ubuntu-drivers install, waited for it to complete, and rebooted. This time, however, it did not fix the issue. Still a black screen with cursor.

I was puzzled, but thought nothing of it, maybe a corrupted installation? maybe 20.3? I guess i’ll just do the old version again since i know it works.

So i did the routine, update and install drivers, same issue. I then tried 20.3 again, same issue. After about the 4th time i started troubleshooting, but nothing worked. Still a black screen with cursor.

I even tried using autoinstall again, same thing.

What really puzzles me is that it worked fine the first time.

Anyway, i’m kinda lost. I tried a bunch of troubleshooting, no dice. I tried commands, just errors. Xserver can’t start, nouveau can’t idle channel 0. I’m not extremely good with linux, so if you know any logging commands that could uncover the solution, please let me know.

If this is a duplicate, please regard me to the answer. Otherwise, i will appreciate any help given.

[Solved] Boot to black screen with Mouse Pointer.

Post by raymerjacque » Wed Feb 20, 2013 4:12 pm

When i got home tonight my Linux desktop was frozen. So i rebooted Pc by the power button.

Now when Pc starts up it boots to a black screen. I can move the mouse pointer around but cant do anything else, since its just a black screen with a mouse pointer. My Pc is set to «auto login» and i assume this happens after the login process, is there a way to change auto login to manual login via live DVD ? I can access my main drive from live dvd.

how do i boot into compatibility mode ? when i start PC there is no grub menu that shows up .

Can someone assist me to fix this problem ?

PC spec’s :
Core I5 3470
8Gb DDR3 Ram
500GB HDD + 80GB HDD
Nvidia GT440 1Gb Gfx card
Monitor is a LG D2343 Cinama 3D Monitor

As a desperate last move i tried to install an additional desktop «sudo apt-get install gnome-shell» and guess what, It took me back to log in screen where i selected cinnamon as default and then i was able to log back into my PC

So not sure what the hell caused this problem, I am guessing there must have been some sort of problem with the GDM, but it seems fixed for now.

You saved my day, man. well, nearly. Was you able to get your old desktop back? I’m not. I can only login to the session ‘Cairo-Dock (GNOME)’ When trying to choose cinnamon, i’m able to log in, but have the old, standard Wallpaper, no starters, no menu, no nothing
