Bluetooth Audio

Post by tsmvp » Mon Jul 29, 2019 1:51 am

Linux Mint newbie here. Even though I have used Linux in the past, that was a very, very long time ago, back in the day when LibreOffice was called StarOffice and was a paid product. LOL. Bluetooth was not even a thing. So after years of using Windows, I decided to give Mint a try and fell in love. Amazing. All I need is there with the exception of a few apps (took care of that using CrossOver).
Hardware wise my Dell XPS 13 worked amazingly well out-of-the-box with Linux Mint 19.1. Touchscreen, etc. All work.
Bluetooth is the only issue so far. No matter what, I cannot get audio to work. Mouse/Keyboard working fine.
I tried several things (reading posts around here) and at one stage I got the headphones to pair but sound was stuttering like crazy, unusable.
Trying to fix that I am sure I broke something and now no matter what the headphones do not pair. The system does see the headphones and attempts to pair but never completes.
Any brave soul willing to help me? I can run whatever command to get the output for hardware, packages installed, etc.
I just want to fix this last bump on the road so I can fully enjoy Mint.

I am having exact same issue myself. I know this is not my thread but I have seen no responses to it since you posted it. I am supplying needed info to diagnose. I am sure both our problems are the same and an answer should fix both.

I had the same problem with my Dell XPS 13 9343, using W10. Headphones paired but would never connect or make any sound. My guess is it requires a special driver. Sorry, this does not help but it seems to be a problem even with Windows 10 on the Dell XPS 13.

My XPS was still under warranty so what Dell did to fix it is, they replaced the BT/WiFi chip. Now it is working for W10 and VB/Mint 19.

Hope you find a easier solution. Let us know.

Hi tsmvp, and welcome to the forum.

You (and others) may have better luck if you swap out Blueberry for Blueman as your Bluetooth Manager. That has been enough to fix quite a few people that had these issues. You can do this with the Software Manager, Synaptic Package Manager or the following terminal commands:

apt remove --purge blueberry apt install blueman
apt install pulseaudio-module-bluetooth pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover

That last command will throw an error if the module is already loaded showing the following: Failure: Module initialization failed

Let’s us know if that was of any help. If it wasn’t, please include the output of inxi -Fxz in your next reply.

With that system, you might want to upgrade to the 5.x kernel. No idea if that’ll make any difference for your BT issues, but you’ll probably have better system support overall.

To all: In a day or two Mint 19.2 will be officially released. There will be an upgraded version of Blueberry included in that release, that may or may not fix your BT issues.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run » inxi -Fxzd » and » lsusb » from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

It may very well be that the Bluetooth driver is not installed or needs to be installed or configured or unblocked (if blacklisted). Some laptop combination WiFi and Bluetooth cards do not work well in Linux. You may even need to get another small USB Bluetooth 4.x adapter (recommend CSR), if you cannot get your existing BlueTooth working.

To see if anything is blocked (blacklisted)

My low-cost USB Bluetooth adapter (CSR v4.0) works well in Linux.

First of all thank you all for jumping in, trying to help. Really appreciated.
Couple comments regarding what I have done so far and the results:
1. Under Windows 10, it always worked. No issues there.
2. I tried removing blueberry and loading blueman. It removed and installed the other one successfully. I then ran the pactl command and it returned a number (24). Then I tried launching the Bluetooth Manager, deleting the headphones and adding them back. I was able to get them connected and I do see them now under ‘Sound’. They are listed as my Output Device, with the AD2P Sink profile. When I click ‘Test Sound’ I can hear the left and right sides but the sound does stutter. If I click ‘Sounds’ and play the login.oga sound, the stuttering is pretty bad. When setting it up, it gives me three options: Headset, Audio Sink and Handsfree. Not sure which one I must select and what exactly the difference is.

We are very close I think! The output of the inxi -Fxz is:
