How to change the plymouth splash screen displayed during startup?

I am wondering is there a way to change the startup graphic while LinuxMint is loading up? I am currently using the 19.3 distro version. I don’t mind seeing the Linux Mint logo, but I was wondering if I could change it something else — as in a custom picture that I (or someone else) created. If it is, which format is used .png, .jpg, or .gif or other format?

From the menu, click System —> Login Window. Select the Appearance tab and you’ll see the section to change the background.

This is what I want to change, it shows when my system is BOOTING UP, that is what I want to change. I do NOT use a login screen as I am the only one that uses my laptop. I can get into administrator mode (sudo) if I need to change it that way.

That is the plymouth splash screen, in /usr/share/plymouth/themes/mint-logo/mint-logo.png and mint-logo16.png. Either replace with images of your choosing using the same file names or edit the /usr/share/plymouth/themes/mint-logo/mint-logo.script to point at new images.

I tried to put another mint.png in that folder but I didn’t have permission. I even tried it as an administrator but it wouldn’t accept my password. I typed correctly as it is the same password I use when I install programs through either the command line or the package manager. I then tried the same with the script file to maybe point it to another folder to use to find the picture.

What I want to do is have a small logo of the TARDIS from Doctor Who to show up when I boot up, just because I’m also a sci-fi nerd.

Then somehow you got it wrong, in your file manager (nemo if cinnamon), right click on /usr and ‘open as root’. Then navigate to the required folder.

How to change boot splash screen in Linux Mint?

Everyone should have control over all aspects of their computer and the choice to make it look the way they want, which is precisely why, in this article, we’re going through a step-by-step process of changing your splash screen on Linux.

Note that while these steps are for Linux Mint, they should also work for other Linux distros. Let us know in the comments below if you’re coming from another Linux distro and whether or not this guide worked for you. Check out our article here if you want to change the Windows boot image.

Changing boot splash screen on Linux Mint

The process is simple and straightforward, as you’d expect from Linux. All you need to do is replace a file and update the theme master record, and you’re done.

The first step here is, of course, getting a replacement splash screen. Now you can design your own or download one off of the internet. The image needs to be a simple PNG.

Dimensions, however, depend on your specific monitor resolution and size. You might have to play around a little bit here. Anyways, let’s get started

Step 1: Once you’ve decided about the splash screen image, rename it to mint-logo.png.

Step 2: Navigate to the following directory

/usr/share/playmouth/themes/mint-logo

Make sure to open the directory with root privileges. Search for mint-logo if you’re doing this on the Linux file manager. When the folder appears, right-click on it and select Open as Root.

Now enter your password and follow the next step.

Step 3: Copy your file in this location and replace it with the default file already there.

Step 4: Enter the following command in the terminal

It’ll ask for your password. Now reboot your computer to check out that brand-new splash screen.

[Solved] Change boot logo

I was wondering if it’s possible to change the boot and shutdown logo. I don’t want to change the hole screen (polymouth would’ve been my choice). Is it possible to let the black screen and just change the Mint Logo?

I’ve changed the «bootlogo.png» and «shutlogo.png» in \lib\plymouth\themes\mint-logo , in that case, only the shutdown screen has changed. The boot logo is still the same.

Edit: Maybe this can help someone else. In fact, after changing the original logos, we need to regenerate the boot image file using the following command:

That’s because you’re using a newer version of linux mint, in linux mint 17 it used to be inside /lib, but
in the current version of this time, I found it inside
cd /usr/share/plymouth

How To Change Bootscreen Logo In Linux Mint?

A bootscreen is a graphical representation of the boot process of an operating system. It can be scrolling boot messages in a console or virtual terminal or it can be a combination of both. Bootscreen enhances the user experience. It can also display some errors if the operating system is unable to boot in the normal state. A bootscreen is also known as bootsplash. The operating system’s logo appears on the bootscreen, here I will discuss changing this logo in Linux mint.

Plymouth

Plymouth is a bootsplash for Linux operating systems that is used by various distributions like Fedora, Ubuntu, Linux mint, etc. It supports animation using a direct rendering manager(DRM) and KMS driver. It gets packed into the initial ramdisk (initrd). Plymouth also handles user interaction with the system during boot. Some other bootsplash programs available in Linux are splashy, Xsplash, fbsplash (implemented in Gentoo), etc.

Steps to change the logo in Linux mint-

1. Find the plymouth directory in the system –

Before executing any command in the terminal you should change the current user to the root user. Use the commands that are given below –

Change directory to search under root –

Now execute the following command to start searching for plymouth directory in the system.

/usr/share/plymouth as highlighted in red in the above image is the directory that we are looking for.

2. Change the current directory to directory containing logo files (.png files)

Now inside plymouth find the directory themes and move into this directory –

List the files and directories under the themes directory-

Find another directory named mint-logo inside themes and move into it –

List the files and directories under mint-logo directory –

mint-logo is the directory that contains the files that are used by the system at boot time.

You can see in the above image we have to change the file named mint-logo.png which is highlighted in red in order to change the current logo of the boot screen.

3. Backup the original logo file to old-mint-logo.png –
To back up the original logo file we will change the name of the original logo file. So that we can keep it safe. If later you want it you can restore it as it is now. Use the following command to rename it-

mv mint-logo.png old-mint-logo.png

4. Copy the new image or picture inside the mint-logo directory with the name mint-logo.png

Use the path of the new image and copy it to the mint-logo directory –

cp /home/lalit/Picture/newimg.png ./mint-logo.png

5. Change the permissions for the mint-logo file –

6. Update the changes into the system
Don’t forget this step to update the changes that you made into the system otherwise change will not appear. You can update it by using the following command. Wait for a few seconds to complete the updating process.

7. Now reboot your system

Once you get completed with the steps above, you can reboot your system by entering the reboot command in the terminal-

Conclusion

Other distributions such as Ubuntu follow a similar process to change the boot screen logo. You can locate the logo file inside the plymouth directory and change it in order to change the boot screen logo.
