[SOLVED] FF Multi Converter cannot install

Post by Spacecadet » Mon Jul 17, 2017 10:20 am

I went to install FF Multi Converter onto my new 18.2 install. When I run this in terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ffmulticonverter/stable

‘This PPA does not support xenial’
Cannot add PPA: »This PPA does not support xenial».

How can I install FF Multi Converter? Or do I have to wait for them to update the PPA? At Launchpad it doesn’t look like there has been any updates for 300 weeks. But I see recentish posts indicating that people are still using it. Would love to get this program back again as it is so useful.

I never was able to get it to work for me in 18.2. But I wanted to report that I have just installed Mint 19 then tried again and it works perfectly. So pleased as such a great little tool. I had missed it. Thank you for helping

I just had a look at the Launchpad site for that program, which is where I’d get it from:

The newest build is 155 weeks old. That’s why xenial (ubuntu 16.04 and hence mint 18) is unsupported. Backwards compatibility doesn’t work the same in Linux as in Windows. Which is why you want to install software (or do config steps) only if it says it’s for your own point release.

If you go to the ffmulticonverter site’s dl page .

. under Ubuntu it says «We need a new PPA. We would appreciate help with packaging». I am a bit leery of any app that doesn’t have a ppa or deb file for Ubuntu. It’s the largest distro out there. And I doubt this app is good enough to compile and build it from source. I know of few that are.

There are lots of other good converters in Linux. I prefer handbrake for encoding to h264 or avidemux for xvid. They have a good balance of ease of use and power.

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run » inxi -Fxzd » from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

«FF Multi Converter» is a superb multi-media converter and is easy to install in Linux Mint 18.x or 17.x, see below:
Click link below, click the download button to save the archive file «ffmulticonverter-1.8.0.tar.gz» (2016-06-30),
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffmulticonv/

Then, bring up your file manager, browse to this file, right click it, extract here, which creates a «ffmulticonverter-1.8.0» folder, get into that, right click in the whitespace, select actions, open terminal here, which opens a console terminal window, type in (or copy and paste) the command below to install it, exit the terminal.

sudo python3 setup.py install

There are some other really nice multi-media converter applications as well, like «Curlew», WinFF, Selene, Transmageddon, etc.

Curlew Multi-Converter Returns Back To Support Latest Ubuntu Versions

To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/apps
sudo apt-get install curlew

*** You might find that installing «ffmpeg» version 3.x.x would help too (I always do).

To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf/ffmpeg-3
sudo apt update && sudo apt install ffmpeg libav-tools x264 x265

«ffmpeg» is used by many applications, including video (multi-media) converters.

Those instructions should let you easily install «FF Multi Converter». I use «FF Multi Converter» and «Curlew» the most, and I have all those mentioned before and even more installed.

Something called FF Multi Converter has installed on the machine and there are icons indicating such in ‘Office’ and ‘Sound and Video’ but nothing happens when I click. Nothing is launched. Am I missing some thing?

Did you install «ffmpeg» version 3?

Sometimes after installing something, if you do not get menu items or a desktop icon (& are supposed too), or it does not run, you can run these commands below from a console terminal to finish the installation and perhaps install some missing dependencies:

I have «FF Multi Converter» running very well in my Linux Mint KDE 18.1 using the instructions I gave you which are their instructions from their «readme» file . It shows up in my Multimedia Menu.

And if need be, logout and log back in, or restart.
