How do i put a fingerprint scanner in linux mint 21 mate

Post by Kastor2077 » Tue Aug 30, 2022 12:55 pm

Im in a new Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ALC6 and I want to configure my Elan fingerprint scanner (ID: 04f3:0c4b) that I have. I tried the «fprint» thing but it doesn´t work because when i press «fprintd-enroll» it says: «Impossible to enroll: GDBus.Error:net.reactivated.Fprint.Error.NoSuchDevice: No devices available» but I’m certain that I do have a fingerprint scanner. How do i link the scanner to fprintd?

I had Mate on one laptop, but could not get fingerprint to work. In the end, I could not boot laptop. I finally deleted all the fingerprint files I installed via a Live LM Mate USB flash drive, then laptop booted again. After that, I decided not to use the fingerprint option.
Good luck.

I’ve been seeing this topic a lot lately. The truth, which some don’t seem to want to hear, is that fingerprint readers just aren’t reliable in Linux. I don’t think the people who make those components want to release their encryption format.

Put it this way . AFAIK none of the mfrs who sell laptops with preloaded Linux ship with the FP reader working.

I’m just not at all willing to put up with this sort of thing for something like logging in. I disabled mine in the BIOS.

I agree with Hoser Rob, it’s not worth the trouble, and if you do get it to work, you are very lucky.
I did a ton of research on Linux and the Fingerprint issue, and my summation is it’s not worth it, just to be able to use the fingerprint option.
I finally got the fingerprint sensor to be listed in Driver Manager after installing the somerville deb, but still no-go. Life’s too short.

While the bummer-wagon here still has room for one more.

I’ve thought about tinkering the fingerprint reader on my laptop, just for fun, but I don’t even want to remove the sticker that I’ve put over it.

I think it’s reckless to surrender personal and one-of-a-kind biometric data, just for the «convenience» of not needing to use a password or pin.

Having said that, I welcome you to share the details of your PC setup. Plug in all relevant dongles, accessories, and peripherals. Then:

Open a Terminal (ctrl-alt-T), then copy-and-paste the following line into the Terminal window, then tap Enter.

C=code];echo "[$C`inxi -Fxxxpmrz;xinput;lsusb;mokutil --sb-state;lspci`[/$C"|xed -&

After several seconds, xed text editor pops open, showing PC technical data that’s necessary to analyze your situation.

Copy-and-paste everything from xed into a Reply here.

For me, a Notebook with no working fingerprint would be a KO for Linux! On my Lenovo P72 these steps made the fp work — reliable!

sudo apt remove fprintd sudo add-apt-repository ppa:uunicorn/open-fprintd sudo apt-get update sudo apt install open-fprintd fprintd-clients python3-validity

(mark the fingerprint auth option active)

(the following step only if no old fingerprint is found in the bios data)

fprintd-enroll -f right-index-finger xxxx

Linux mint fingerprint login

Hey
I recently got my Thinkpad T14 and now I am trying to use my fingerprint for authentication (Lock screen and command line). I am using Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon. I installed fprintd and pam following these instructions:

$ sudo apt install libpam-fprintd

selected fingerprint and then enrolled my index finger with the enroll command. I can verify that the fingerprint is registered with fprint and this works fine, but whenever I have to enter my password and try to use my fingerprint nothing happens. Can anyone help me? 🙂

I already tried restarting and

but it didnt help. The system just does not ask for my fingerprint (I dont know what it looks like but I imagine it would say something like «fingerprint or password»). I tried to use it when it asks for the password to unlock the screen and after using a sudo command. When I use the command journalctl -u fprintd my terminal gives me:

At that time I tried to login in the lock screen, but nothing happened and I locked in with my password as usual. I also tried waiting for like a minute or smth.

If I search for Fingerprint GUI in software manager I get no results.
Is Fingerprint GUI endorsed by Linux Mint?

That’s because you didn’t follow the instructions you were given. You need to add the ppa, as indicated by @Boltar:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fingerprint/fingerprint-gui sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libbsapi policykit-1-fingerprint-gui fingerprint-gui

When I «sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fingerprint/fingerprint-gui»

I get the following message. That looks all very scary. Should I agree?

You are about to add the following PPA:
Packages for Fingerprint GUI (http://www.ullrich-online.cc/fingerprint/) for Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, 17.10, 18.04 and any distribution based thereupon

Installation
=========
0. First of all, if you have installed Fingerprint GUI manually before, get rid of it completely. Remove all binaries, shared libraries, any other files and undo all the changes you have made to your system config files (especially to files under /etc/pam.d/).

1. Add this PPA to your sources:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fingerprint/fingerprint-gui
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install libbsapi policykit-1-fingerprint-gui fingerprint-gui

3. Log out of your session and log back in (we need the new session defaults to be picked up).

Setup
=====
After installation launch “Fingerprint GUI” and enrol your fingerprints.
That should be all you need to do!
Try locking your screen, logging out and in, sudo in terminal and running graphical apps requiring root privileges.

Uninstallation
===========
GNOME users: The package policykit-1-fingerprint-gui replaces GNOME’s standard PolicyKit daemon (contained in package policykit-1-gnome). However, when you decide to uninstall Fingerprint GUI (and hence remove policykit-1-fingerprint-gui), policykit-1-gnome will not get automatically installed back, hence there won’t be any PolicyKit daemon in the system, and APT will try to remove all the packages that depend on it. Therefore, if you want to remove Fingerprint GUI, make sure you install policykit-1-gnome back first.
sudo apt-get install policykit-1-gnome
sudo apt-get remove fingerprint-gui

KDE SC users: The above instructions for GNOME users apply to you as well, just replace “policykit-1-gnome” by “polkit-kde-1” throughout the text.

Note for KDE SC users
==================
Please note that Fingerprint GUI doesn’t work with kdm and kscreensaver because of a bug in these applications (see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105631).

Note for Lubuntu users
==================
lxdm does not properly support alternative authentication methods in the PAM stack. If you want to use fingerprint-gui with Lubuntu, you should install lightdm and lightdm-gtk-greeter.

Troubleshooting
=============
If something doesn’t work as you expect, you can try one of the following steps:
• In terminal run «sudo pam-auth-update». Make sure that the PAM profile called “Fingerprint authentication by Fingerprint GUI” is on top of the list and active. Otherwise, you may try resetting your PAM to system defaults with «sudo pam-auth-update —force».
• Check /var/log/auth.log for any clues. Fingerprint GUI is set up to run in debugging mode by default.
