Welcome to Linux Mint and the Linux Mint forum
You would choose the window list preferences
Screenshot at 2018-03-15 11-00-26.png
and choose your grouping preference — always/limited space
Works like a charm, little screen more room
Couldn’t find the preferences option at first so for people having the same problem, copied from panels manual:
Preferences
To configure the Window List, right-click on the handle to the left of the window buttons, then choose Preferences.

Group multiple windows in panel
Post by edwinksl » Wed Sep 02, 2015 3:46 am
Hello all, I am wondering if there are ways to group multiple windows of a single program in the panel. This feature can be found in Windows 7 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind . he-taskbar) and has proven to be very useful, especially because I have limited screen real estate on my laptop.
Edit: I am running Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon. I read that it is straightforward to group multiple windows in MATE, but apparently not in Cinnamon.

Turn on file sharing and enable a shared folder on your windows boxes, go to Menu, Places, Network — double click on the Windows Network and you should be able to navigate to the shared folders. To enable the Windows boxes to see a Linux folder, right click on a folder in Nautilus and choose «Sharing Options».

Then what, for example to share files with the windows computer , you would have to be in the workgroup via Samba
—although you can see the windows files without being a member of the windows workgroup, because you can see the network connection name; similar idea as workgroup..
Uninstall Samba and see if that still works, that you can see or share with the windows workgroup..
—it should fail.

I’ve shared folders from Linux to Windows and visa-versa with both computers in different workgroups with no trouble. The main thing is that if a computer is in a different workgroup you will have to browse to that workgroup by going to Network -> Windows Network instead of just clicking on Network and seeing it.

I got the point and the main thing..

Yeah, I know the main thing is..
Exactly..
Network Places in a windows network is where you look
—if it (the computer) doesn’t appear (in the network browser via its name), some/many people will get lost (what do I do now ?)
And the fact it can be done is beside the point..
But not the way Microsoft wants you to think of a workgroup, it is for them your network; when they are describing how to use/setup or otherwise make use of a home network/workgroup or when they mention it: a domain..

If you’re trying to get your Mint Workgroup name to match your Windows workgroup name ( MSHOME maybe? ) then do this:
Press Alt+F2
Type gksu gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf
Do a search for the word — workgroup — and change:
workgroup = workgroup
to
workgroup = mshome ( or whatever you want it to be )
Then:
Open Terminal
Type sudo service samba restart

I’ve just come across an interesting bug where having your machines on different workgroups is actually an advantage. All the machines on my network have different workgroup names except 2 — one Mint and one WinXP. After updating samba on the Mint machine the smb.conf file got changed and WinXP insisted on asking for authentication not at the share level but at the workgroup level. Using the network browser in WinXP resulted not only in an error but WinXP couldn’t even find itself in the network. It did however see all of the other machines ( on different workgroups ) on the network.
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

Welcome to the Linux Mint forums.
Open Settings from your menu and from the Personal section in that open Panel. Go the Items tab there, select Window Buttons in the list and click the Edit button in the right sidebar (the button underneath the big red X). Enable Window grouping here by setting it to Always.
