[SOLVED] Cannot install grub

Post by super scooper » Thu Feb 18, 2021 8:01 pm

I am trying to install grub on Linux mint 20.01 mate, but after typing sudo grub install , I get the following error: grub-install: error: /usr/local/lib/grub/x86_64-efi/modinfo.sh doesn’t exist. Please specify —target or —directory.
. I went to the location /usr/local/lib/grub/ , but there was no x86_64-efi folder but instead there was a folder named i386-pc . How do I install grub to that folder instead? I am a noob so all help is appreciated. EDIT: Installed Refind instead, got no errors.

GRUB should be installed automatically when you install Mint.

Can you boot into Mint without a problem? If so, GRUB is installed.
What is it you are trying to do exactly?
In general, if GRUB is working then best to leave it as it is unless there is a good reason.

When I first installed linux mint. I was dual booting it with windows 10. I did not know that the boot manager was grub, and I though that it was related to windows 10. When I removed windows 10 from my PC, I thought that there was no boot manager any more so that is why I tried to install grub. When I got the error, I installed the Refind boot manager instead (the day after I posted this thread), not knowing that grub was already installed.

rEFInd is a great boot manager, so that’s an excellent solution. To answer your original question, this tutorial has worked for me.

Windows» ?

danovoselov

[SOLVED] Installer fails: ‘grub-install /dev/sda failed’

Post by ParaDice » Wed Aug 05, 2020 4:02 pm

I’m trying to do a fresh install of LM 20, but it keeps failing with the error: ‘grub-install /dev/sda failed’.

I’m pretty sure it’s because I’ve zero experience with EFI installs. I’d love to install without an EFI partition, but Mint won’t let me. Can someone help me figure out either
a) how to run the installer without EFI or
b) get the installer to install grub with EFI?

I’ve attached my setup as a screenshot. Notes:
* I use the «Something else» option because I have moved my /home folder to a separate encrypted partition.
* The NTFS partitions are used by a Win dual boot.

Looks like you’re booted in UEFI, but trying to install to an MBR partition table.
From the live session, please report the output of inxi -Fxz and sudo parted —list.

thanks for your reply! Your assumption is correct: I used to install in non-UEFI mode (MBR), but now I cannot seem to get Mint to live-boot into MBR mode. The BIOS is set to boot in legacy mode.

Here are my specs and partition details:
