how to install tar.gz files solved

Post by daddyo » Sun Apr 19, 2020 11:28 pm

I am using Mint 19.3 and I keep getting libmtp errors when I connect my android phone via usb to transfer files. I just found out that this problem has been fixed but I need to install the tar file. I am using the terminal and am able extract it to a new folder but when I change directories to that new folder and type ./configure, it keeps telling me that it doesn’t exist. I have never actually installed a tar file before so this is new territory for me. The file I am attempting to install is libmtp-libmtp-1-1-17.tar.gz. Can someone please point me in the right direction? Thank you.

Post the link to he download page before you even attempt to install it. You are potentially headed for disaster if you go ahead without knowing what you’re doing.

Well, it’s a bit late to ask for help now, innit.

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu 18.04, Bionic Beaver. You have downloaded and installed a version intended for Focal Fossa (20.04). Pretty much all you can do is reboot as you hope that it works and that it doesn’t clobber your system. You never know, you might get lucky.

I have been using Mint for years but I am not anywhere close to being a programmer and have never installed a tar file. I always go through the package manager but I am frustrated that something that worked before no longer works now. Where did you find the information for Focal Fossa?

Doh! I did not see that. Well, the good thing is that it didn’t install because I had the wrong package. Unfortunately, I still have no idea how to find the correct package or do I know when they will release an update. After hours of research I discovered an app that does wifi direct so that I can move files from my desktop to the sd card in my phone. I even tried an ftp server and it would not see my phone. I thought it was a problem with Android 9 but I am pretty sure that problem is really with the libmtp files. Thank you for your help. Just for giggles I might post a new question in a different location in the forum and see if anyone else is aware of this problem. Cheers

You won’t find the «correct package» for an Ubuntu 18.04 base unless the Ubuntu maintainers post one, in which case the update will appear in your update manager. Bug-fixes to applications in the repositories usually only appear if there is an egregious security issue involved, but that’s not the case here.

You have five basic choices.

1) Tell us the exact process that you went through to install the package, and elucidate on the technical meaning of «it didn’t install because I had the wrong package», including what commands you used, what any error messages told you, verbatim, links to any instructions you have followed, if any, so on and so forth, using code tags around terminal output. You’ll see the code tags icon when you reply.

4) Wait and hope that the 18.04 base is updated with the newer version.

Here is the weird thing. I connected my phone but Android 9 no longer has the MTP option — only File Transfer. I just opened my phone from the desktop and navigated to the Music folder on my sd card. At that point a box popped up saying unable to mount Moto G7 and in smaller letters it said unable to mount MTP device [usb:002,005]. I was still able to transfer some files to my card from the desktop. However, when I exited the file manager and attempted to click back into my phone it just sat there and would not access my phone again. Thanks

How to Install Tar.gz

linux tar gz

Tar files are a collection of files wrapped up into a single file. Tar.gz files use the standard gnu zip(gzip) compression. Due to their portability, you don’t need any extra software to unbundle them in Linux/macOS.

Because of this, the source code of open-source software is generally packaged as tar.gz files. Using system-provided package managers is an easier way for installation. But, not all software is available across all Linux systems. Also, the type of licensing may prevent some applications from being available altogether. This is where the tar.gz build system comes in.

How to Install Tar.gz

How to Extract Tar.gz Files

You can decompress a tarball in one of two ways. Most Ubuntu-based distros come with the Archive Manager application. Use either one of these approaches as you see fit.

Extract Tar.gz Files Using Archive Manager (Ubuntu/kali Linux/ Mint/ Debian)

Extracting tar.gz using Archieve Manager

  1. Use your File Manager to get to the location of the file.
  2. Right Click on the file and click on Extract Here. You should see the Archive Manager extraction progress.
  3. After completion, you will notice a new folder created along with the tar.gz files.
  4. Open this folder in the terminal.

Extract Tar.gz Using the Command Line (All Linux Flavours + Macos Any Version)

Extract

  1. Open the terminal.
  2. cd /home/foo/Downloads
    • Takes you inside the downloaded location.
  3. ls *tar.gz*
    • Finds any tar.gz files and displays the full filename.
  4. tar -xzf keepassx-2.0.3.tar.gz
    • Extracts from the tarball keepassx-2.0.3.tar.gz and creates a new folder with the same name.
    • Extracts (x) using the Gzip algorithm (z) of the file (f) named ‘keepassx-2.0.3.tar.gz’.

ls configure

  • cdkeepassx-2.0.3
    • Takes you inside the now extracted folder.
  • ls
    • To confirm if the extraction completed successfully and to Check if you have a configure.ac file or Cmakelists.txt file in this folder.

How to Extract Tarfile in Windows

If you are using Windows 10 or newer, you can use tar utility from Powershell. If using an older version, you need to install extraction software to get files from tar.gz. This article lists some of the popular software used in Windows PC.

      Extract Tar in Windows

      1. Type Powershell in Start Menu to open Windows Powershell.
      2. tar -xzf keepassx-2.0.3.tar.gz
      3. Extracts (x) while being verbose (v) using the gzip algorithm (z) of the file (f) named ‘keepassx-2.0.3.tar.gz’.

      How to Install Tar.gz File

For our purposes, we will examine the steps by installing a free application. The name of this application is KeePassX. Check their website for more information.

After following the above steps, we have the files we need under /home/foo/Downloads/keepassx-2.0.3.

The concept of this process is easy to follow.

      Configure Make Install

First, we build our configuration, and then we compile it for our Operating System. This process applies to any distro or any flavor of Linux with all tarball applications. Of course, every application has different config files. But they all follow the above general pattern for the installation process.

      CAT Install

      1. cd /home/foo/Downloads/keepassx-2.0.3
        • Takes you inside the extracted folder
      2. ls
        • To look for an INSTALL/README file that contains detailed instructions.
      3. cat INSTALL
        • To read the contents of the file INSTALL. You can do the same for README too.

      ls configure

    ls configure.ac

To check if you have a configure.ac file or cmake files/folders here.

      Cmake

  • If found, just do ./configure and move to Step 10.
  • If not found, you need to create a build folder to generate config files.
  • mkdir build
    • To make a separate build folder
  • cd build
    • Go into the build folder
  • cmake ..
    • Configure using CMakeLists.txt file from directory one-level up into the current build folder.

      make

    make

Starts building using the freshly generated config files.

      Sudo Make Install

    sudo make install

Install into the system using the freshly built files from step 10.

      FAQs

What is Dependency Error When Trying to Run cmake or configure?

This means you don’t have the required dependencies installed in your system. If you look at the INSTALL file, you will be able to see the list of dependencies. For Ubuntu-based systems, use apt-get install to install dependencies as shown below.

What Error Do We Get When Using cmake?

Cmake stores errors in CMakeError.log. This can happen when one or more dependencies are installed but don’t have the required versions. Refer to this article to install the correct versions of packages.

      Error When Using ./configure?

Autoconf application is missing. Newer Ubuntu versions don’t ship autoconf utility by default. This can be solved by installing it as sudo apt-get install autoconf.

If you want to read more about the source installation process, follow this website.
