HP Pavilion g6 Boot & W’less Probs After Install LinuxMint13

Post by gthomas » Thu Aug 29, 2013 6:13 pm

Hardware details at end of post, Total newbie to Linux and installing new OS

HP Pavilion g6 pre-installed windows 8

Disabled secure boot, enabled legacy boot
Installed Mint 13 from DVD (had to F9 to force boot from DVD drive, it ignores boot order set in BIOS set up)
Selected the «Install alongside windows 8» option
Install completed OK

Does not boot into the select OS option screen. Always boots into windows 8. Have to F9 and force boot from ‘Notebook Hard drive’ to get to boot to selection screen and then OK booting into Mint.

Downloaded and ran ‘boot-repair’ programme, selected ‘recommended, fixes most probs’ option

No better but now have to boot from EFI (after F9) as booting from ‘notebook hard drive’ comes up with error

error: invalid arch independent ELF magic
grub rescue:

Tried disabling/enabling/disabling legacy boot but still no change, unless I hit F9 it always boots into windows 8.

Also wireless has stopped working. I have downloaded a Linux driver for the Ralink 5390R Wireless adaptor but can’t seem to work out how to install it, the «synaptic package installer’ doesn’t even register the files exist

Priority 1 is a working wireless connection
Priority 2 is not having to boot via F9 every time

PS: its slow, should it be this slow?

Any help much appreciated, I’ve looked and tried some suggestions from this and other sources but am now completely stuck.

windows 8 and UEFI is a pain.

All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint.

Spearmint2: thanks for the reply.

If I have already installed Linux Mint how do I move the partition where grub is installed?
How can I tell which version of grub is installed?

If its of any relevance my partitions are

If Mint, then it’s GRUB2 used for boot program.

Partition File System Mnt Pt Label Size Flags
sda1 ntfs WINRE 400MiB hidden, diag
windows recovery partition

sda2 fat32 /boot/efi 260MiB boot
windows EFI boot partition

sda4 ntfs 373GiB

sda6 unknown 977KiB bios_grub
Must be where grub was installed, but I’ve not seen
a setup like this before.

sda7 ext4 / 300MiB
linux root partition (too small? Live version?)

sda8 linux-swap RECOVERY 20GiB hidden
If that’s swap then it’s larger then necessary.

All that above looks different than what you first showed below

Drives: HDD Total Size: 750.2GB (1.2% used)
1: /dev/sda Hitachi_HTS54757 750.2GB
Partition:
ID: / size: 301G used: 8.1G (3%) fs: ext4

At this point I’m not sure WHAT you have going on there. Some commands that might help if you can boot to Mint is

Later edit;
I had a thought. Did you try and install 32 bit Mint onto a 64 bit Windows installation? I know you enabled legacy boot, but would be better perhaps on UEFI type setup to use 64 bit Mint.

I have an HP pavillion G6 laptop and my OS installed with no problems. The only thing is i have to press f9 to boot my linux partition. I have windows 8 alongside linux mint 15. i don’t know why you are having wireless problems, unless it is a problem with the driver for linux mint 13. it should work with linux mint 15 though. My processor is an Intel i3 3110 m and i also had to disable secure boot. It is a pain using UEFI though. If i wipe windows 8 off of it and delete its bootloader off my hard drive it should boot me directly into linux. But I have the same thing. I believe you need to change the boot order. thats what i had to do. Or press f9 to access the boot menu. It should give you the option to boot your linux partition from there. Hope this helps.

Spreamint2: Thanks again for the reply. Not sure what happened with the info I entered for the partitions but I entered it using spaces to look like a table but it got mangled in the published post, many apologies. Should have read

Partition File System Mnt Pt Label Size Flags
sda1 ntfs WINRE 400MiB hidden, diag
«windows recovery partition»

sda2 fat32 /boot/efi 260MiB boot
«windows EFI boot partition»

sda3 unknown 128MiB msftres
«microsoft reserved partition on GPT partitioned disc»

sda4 ntfs 373GiB
«Most likely where windows system resides»

sda6 unknown 977KiB bios_grub
«Must be where grub was installed, but I’ve not seen
a setup like this before.»

sda7 ext4 / 300GiB
«linux root partition (too small? Live version?)»
This looks OK now after typo correction

sda8 linux-swap 3.9GiB
«If that’s swap then it’s larger then necessary. »
This looks OK now after typo correction

sda5 ntfs RECOVERY 20GiB hidden
??

I definately installed the 64 bit version

The commands you suggested returned

gthomas@gthomas-laptop-01 ~ $ sudo parted -1 parted: invalid option -- '1' Usage: parted [-hlmsv] [-a] [DEVICE [COMMAND [PARAMETERS]]. ] gthomas@gthomas-laptop-01 ~ $ sudo gparted -1 ====================== libparted : 2.3 ====================== Could not stat device -1 - No such file or directory. gthomas@gthomas-laptop-01 ~ $

I’m going to try thre boot repair programme again as I think this muddled things up a bit, meanwhile I still have the wireless to get working.

LinuxIsBetterthanMS: Thanks. I can boot through F9 but I guess it shouldn’t have to be that way and so should be fixable. I need to keep the Windows 8 for some work related stuff but will 95% want to run Linux. Part of my problem was that whatever order I set in F10, whether I set legacy mode or not, I always had to hit F9 and force the boot otherwise it always boots Windows8. What wireless card do you have? is it the Ralink 539B?

using small L, not numeral 1.

After the typo corrections, it all looks good. This dual booting Linux with windows 8 is very new and seemingly a pain and not even working the same for each person, when it does work. I think the windows 8 requires the use of UEFI, but don’t know if it also requires GPT instead of MBR.

I wish I had a win 8 system I could experiment on, just for this reason, but don’t. I’m not going to pay MS for a copy just for that either. I have no intention of ever running it myself. It’s people like you already with the W8 system who gets to be the pioneers in trying methods to make it work together.

This is kicking butt on the best of us.

GPT and Linux
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GU . tion_Table
Kernel Support
CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION option in the kernel config enables GPT support in the kernel (despite the name EFI PARTITION). This options must be built-in the kernel and not compiled as a loadable module. This option is required even if GPT disks are used only for data storage and not for booting. This option is enabled by default in Arch’s linux and linux-lts kernels in [core] repo. In case of a custom kernel enable this option by doing CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION=y.

Rod Smith is a member in these forums. (srs5694)He’s been working hard on the problem. Many links at this site also. His method is a bit convoluted, but seems successful. Fedora is considering a workaround using Microsoft’s certificate to hook into the windows 8 boot process in some manner, but also a lot of flak coming their way from those who feel that approach is a sell out to Microsoft, letting the bully win.
http://rodsbooks.com/gdisk/

To my understanding, with windows 8, one thing is tied to another. windows 8 (64 bit) requires UEFI, and that requires GPT, and that only serves 64 bit operating systems, and if that’s not correct then I’m more confused on it that I thought. Windows 8 does not support booting UEFI from MBR disks or 0xEF partitions.

The windows 8 Upgrade however uses existing partitions, so there must also be a way to install windows 8 in a MBR formatted disk, which would make it easier to dual boot linux with it too. I don’t know how or if an OEM installed version can do the same. Obviously a 32 bit version of W8 would have to install on MBR disk, but I’m not sure a 64 bit version can do that, or if it can, must it be an Upgrade version only.

The information from Microsoft says W8 will use existing partitions if they exist, but that would no doubt be for retail, but using an royal OEM installation program may not allow that. If it did, then one could conceivably install Linux first on MBR drive, leave a partition for W8 and then run it’s installation program.
