User gm10 suggested the following link:

Excellent solution, thank you!
Hello, I’m new to Linux and using the 64 bit Mint 19 Cinnamon (Tara) distribution.
My Samsung monitor has a 1280 x 1024 (5:4) resolution which I was using in Windows. In Linux my only options are 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 (both 4:3).
Can you please help me find (or load) a suitable driver?
My «System info» is as follows:
-Processor
Intel© Core™ i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90GHz × 4
-Graphics Card
Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (Intel HD Graphics)

You don’t need a driver, that’s built into the kernel, but your monitor cable is possibly damaged or not properly plugged in.

As gm10 said. Also (if applicable) a switch from VGA (analog) connection to HDMI or DVI (both digital) might help.
Obviously both your graphics card and your monitor must have such a connector, and you need the right cable for that as well.

Thank you both!
My monitor only has a VGA port.
Is it possible to select some generic VGA driver which supports up to 1280 x 1024 resolution?

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run » inxi -Fxzd » from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.
The default video drivers usually work very well in Linux Mint. There was, however, an Intel video driver update option, but it is a little tricky to install it and they are discontinuing it.
There are a couple of graphics driver PPA’s that can provide very current drivers for most video cards including Intel. The Ubuntu 18.04 which Linux Mint 19.x is based on is providing fairly current video drivers and Mesa drivers. Updating the video and or Mesa drivers may not help with your video resolution issue. The link from «gm10» is a good link to read.

The Mesa 18.1.x series touts plenty of improvements, including better Vulkan and OpenGL performance, updated Tegra, Nouveau, and Intel drivers, as well as support for the OpenGL 4.5 API.

You are welcome from all of us that replied .
The last web link in my reply provides instructions for the most current video drivers and mesa drivers.
To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one: Click «Select All» above command, right-click the highlighted command, select Copy (or Ctrl+Insert), click in the console terminal window, and right click paste («Shift+Insert» or «Ctrl+Shift+v»), repeat for each command.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
Refresh your Mint Update Manager and apply updates, then restart your computer. Check your System Settings Display Settings for your monitor to see if you can select the resolution that you want. There may also be Display Settings applet or widget available to change display settings.
If updating the video drivers does not provide the resolution you want, use the link from «gm10» and «xrandr» to see what display options your video card and monitor will support and then you can force a particular resolution (This is usually not necessary). It might help to copy and paste the results of «xrandr» back into the forum for us to review.

Установка драйвера Intel в Ubuntu
Intel
Ubuntu
sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-intel
sudo apt install mesa-utils
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers

will a GT610 work well under linux mint?
Post by northwoid » Sat Aug 03, 2013 7:57 pm
Hi
my current graphics card performance is pretty bad under mint (lagy window animations and flash videos) so im looking for a new one
my question is simply will a geoforce gt610 1GB DDR3 be able to provide smooth windows animations and possibility to play 1080p flash videos at 30 fps under linux mint x64 with the cinnamon desktop environment?
i now your probably not sitting with an exact answer but i simply want to now what you think, i now that this card most defiantly will do this under windows but under linux i have no idea i just started using mint a little bit more than a month ago (before that i had nearly no experience with Linux whatsoever ) so please if your an experienced linux user take a guess.
update
ok today i have picked up a gtx 610 even though i fought it probably wouldn’t work well.
my reason for this is that the store have a return policy which allows me to test the card and return it if i regret the buy for whatever reason even though ive tested the card so therefore i thought i might just as well try it and with some luck get away with it.
after a reinstall it surprisingly worked pretty good (smooth window animations) but unfortunately it fell just a bit short when playing 1080p flash video, it worked good most of the time but at action packed scenes there where noticeable frame drops.
conclusion for nvida geoforce gtx 610 ddr 1GB
works well with linux mint cinnamon x64 you get smooth animations but if you like to watch flash videos you might have to settle for 720p with this card
personal conclusion
the card is works surprisingly good but im not setteling for a 720p.
im going to return the card tomorrow and give the hd 6570 ddr3 1 GB a try
