Linux Distro- Suitable For Celeron 2.8GHZ 256kb L2 cache?
Post by L1nux » Fri Oct 30, 2015 4:02 am
Hey, I’ve a PC with intel celeron 2.8GHz (L2 cache size 256kb)
RAM — DDR3 2GB
I’ve installed Linux mint xfce on the computer,it works fine but CPU keeps reaching 100% when I try to complete several tasks and it gets a bit slower.
Watching youtube videos, checking Facebook news feeds makes my CPU reach 90-100%.
At first,I thought it was caused by internet connection ,but computers with slower internet connections(with better hardware) work much better than mine when it comes to internet browsing.
So,do you guys think, that installing any lightweight distro (DSL,Puppy,Bodhi,Slitaz) will help me fix the problem or getting better CPU is only alternative?
Thanks in advance!

I think that kind of performance is to be expected. I’m using an almost identical setup on my desk at work (except it runs Windows), and my CPU is pegged at 100% often.
That said, I wonder how much, if any, graphics acceleration you have. You didn’t mention what kind of GPU you are using. Could be that the CPU is doing most, or all, the graphics rendering. That would certainly eat up CPU cycles.
A lighter distro might make a little difference in the resources it takes to run the desktop, but once you open a full featured browser, YouTube and/or Facebook, you’re not going to see much difference in the resources those apps need.

A computer with Celeron processor most like has the integrated Intel HD graphics.
Which Celeron is it? There are many models from different generations.

First off, turn off all effects/compositing.
Second, you should know your video card. Open the terminal, copy/paste this in:

I never knew CPU could do graphic renderingI think you’re right. I’m going to check my GPU, I’ll post it below

It says
PCI (sysfs) Do I have to install sensors or something like that to get an exact answer?
Thanks all

The terminal should show «PCI (sysfs)» for a second or two, then produce the requested list. Did you give it enough time to generate the list?

It depends largely by which kind of celeron has your pc. Newer «celeron» generations are pretty good. I have n2830 «bay trail», for example, and the performance is very good with Linux Mint 17.2 Xfce. LMDE2 should perform also very well.

I think that it is the video taxing your system (not the OS).
My office laptop runs LM17 Cinnamon 64bit on a celeron processor with 4 GB of RAM and the system runs great as long as I don’t do anything that taxes the processor too much (like video rendering). system specs below >
Below is the same System Monitor screen after I closed the YouTube tab but the other 2 tabs are still open.
Full time Linux Mint user since 2011 — Currently running LM21C on multiple Dell laptops — mostly Vostro models.

You’re right,I did not give enough time to generate the list,I waited for a seconds this time and I got :

My computer is much slower comparing to yours ,I got much less memory cache (256kb) ,less memory(2GB) ,also the CPU has single core
