Accessing Google Calendar on Desktop

I have installed Linux Mint 19 (Tara) (kernel 4.15.0-33-generic x86_64) with XFCE (4.12.3 Gtk 2.24.31) desktop on my Lenovo Y50-70 laptop. I would like to access my google calendar on my desktop. I am unable to find an application which lets me have a bidirectional support. Earlier when I using Linux Mint 18 (XFCE), I could access my calendar using either the gnome calendar application or » California».

Have a look at rainlendar, might do what you want. Don’t use it myself, sync my google calendar with evolution.

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

Maybe using Thunderbird with the Lightening Calendar add-on?

The «groupware» applications like «Evolution» on Cinnamon, Mate, Xfce and Korganizer on KDE can sync with Google Calendar and their other services.

Thank you for the reply.
I am using Claws-mail as my email client and I am happy with it. I would therefore like to avoid switching to either Thunderbird or Evolution. The «calendar-indicator» package does not seem to be available for Ubuntu 18.04. I am primarily looking for an application like «California» or gnome-calendar which can communicate bidirectionally with google calendar.

Thanks. I think the features that I am looking for are available only in the pro version. I will wait for sometime. If nothing works out, I may then try rainlendar.

Some software that is available in PPA’s have not yet updated for the newest version of Linux Mint 19.x based on Ubuntu 18.04, but you can still install that software easily using their Linux deb file from that PPA.

I tried this «calendar-indicator» and it works, I had to change some colors for my Gmail account, but I could sync and add new items from my desktop. I like the system tray icon because I can click it to see current info and even add new ones. I had a lot of other calendars linked in my Gmail calendar like holidays for various countries and religions which did not seem to work or show up with this, but they do in my ‘Korganizer» in my KDE system.

I access my Google Calendar using gnome-calendar. I can add and edit events from gnome-calendar and view and edit events created on my Android devices. The calendar entries are also accessible/modifiable in Evolution’s ToDo list.

Install Google Calendar in Ubuntu 13.04, 12.04, 12.10, Linux Mint

Want to use Google Calendar in Ubuntu? Well, here I’ll show you how to install an indicator which provides Google Calendar integration on Ubuntu and Linux Mint desktop.

The calendar indicator is an open-source applet allows to add, edit and delete Google Calendar events as well as to create new calendars.

Once you installed this indicator, you can login your Google Account and set the automatic synchronization time in its Preferences window.

After that, you can click ‘Show Calendar’ in the indicator menu to dispay your calendar.

Install Google Calendar Indicator

The developer has added the packages to his PPA repository. So far, it supports Ubuntu 13.04 Raring, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise, and Linux Mint 13, 14, 15.

To add the ppa, press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open terminal and then run below commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/atareao

After that, update the package lists and install Google Calendar:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install calendar-indicator

Linux Mint add Google Calendar on your desktop

There is no doubt that Google Calendar is one of the most popular calendars. If you don’t like the idea to open it each time in order to get information for your events for the week then you can simply add it to your desktop. It can be done in 5 minutes. You can see the steps in this article:

View your upcoming calendar events on your Cinnamon Desktop. This desklet uses google-api-python-client to pull events from Google Calendar. You can configure every aspect of the desklet using the configure dialog.

How to add google calendar to your Linux Mint desktop follow next steps (Tested it with Linux Mint 19, 20 , 21)

Disclaimer: ppa:slgobinath/gcalendar and AUR gcalendar are my (the developer of this desklet) own repositories that are not monitored by the Linux Mint team, and user installs it at their own discretion.

Install from Python

We can install Google calendar desklet from Python pip command:

sudo apt install python3-pip python3-setuptools python3-dateutil python3-oauth2client python3-googleapi pip3 install gcalendar

1. Add Google Calendar desklet
   • Right click on your desktop
   • Add desklets
   • Download
   • Download «Google Calendar»
2. Install dependencies using the following command:

sudo apt install python3-pip python3-setuptools python3-dateutil python3-oauth2client python3-googleapi 

1. Install Python modules using the following command(python-dateutil, google-api-python-client and oauth2client):

sudo pip3 install --upgrade python-dateutil google-api-python-client oauth2client 

Authorize gcalendar on Linux

To Authorize Google calendar desklet on your Linux you need to run:

This will send a request to your default browser where you need to authorize the Google account. The link will be something like:

In case of success you should see this message:

The authentication flow has completed.

You can copy the link from the default browser and use it to another one.
The browser should get a Google Authentication page asking for reading permission. Allow the «Cinnamon Google Calendar Desklet» to read your Google Calendar events.

List Google calendars

To list all Google calendar accounts on current Linux machine use:

gcalendar --list-calendars --account username

To use multiple Google calendar accounts follow this steps:

gcalendar --account username 

1. Authorize the calendar
2. Add new instance from the plus sign in Google Desklets
3. Change the username on the newly added calendar
4. You can manage the accounts from the top left arrows
5. You can filter calendars by: «Fill in the list below with the names of all my calendars»

Note: If nothing happens(the screen just blinks) or there is a warning sign in the «Desklets» dialog, try to remove and add the desklet again.

If it doesn’t work, a system restart may help the desklet to detect google-api-python-client.

Another way to solve the not working desklet is by running this command in terminal:

python3 ~/.local/share/cinnamon/desklets/goog[email protected]/py/google_calendar.py --list-calendars 

If you see message like this:

Falling back to --noauth_local_webserver and continuing with authorization. Go to the following link in your browser: https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2/auth?client_id=XXXXXX 

Then you can visit the link in order to authorize the app to read events from your Google Calendar.

In case of success you will see your calendars like:
