Atheros LAN driver for Linux?

Post by newn » Thu Dec 13, 2012 1:16 pm

I can’t find this driver for Linux, and without it I cannot access the internet on Mint 14. Anyone else had a similar issue?

The alx driver you are looking for has not yet been included in the kernel (3.5.0-18) used in LinuxMint 14. If you don’t want to wait, you can get it from the backports repository here:

Select the download for your architecture.

The package was in .deb format. If it failed to install then there would have been a message to tell you why. It would help if you would post that error message.

After installing linux-backports-modules-cw-3.6-3.5.0-18-generic, rebooting and then running #modprobe alx, you should have had a working ethernet connection.

[SOLVED] Help Installing Realtek RTL8125 LAN Driver

Post by Richard952 » Wed Mar 30, 2022 6:20 pm

I just installed Linux for the very first time and encountered a problem. I can’t connect to the internet and I think it’s because I have a very new motherboard and the driver for my Realtek R8125 2.5Gb is not include in the current Mint version. I downloaded the driver from the Realtek web site and unpacked the tarball but don’t have a clue where to go. I read the instructions on the forum and either I don’t know how to apply them or I have something different. I would greatly appreciate some help.

Welcome to the forum, Richard952.

You have not indicated what version of Linux Mint you have installed, but this post indicates the driver is included in the 5.10 kernel. That means if you are using Cinnamon, if you install using the Linux Mint 20.3 «Una» — Cinnamon (Edge) ISO which has the 5.13 kernel, then you will get the driver.

If that driver indicates it only works with the 5.6 kernel, they you likely would not want to use it if you have a very new computer.

Please provide more information about your hardware so we better understand your situation. What is the output of

Installing Realtek ethernet driver

Post by wimbledon_lime_drive » Sun Nov 22, 2020 7:49 pm

I’m trying to get my ethernet to work and a solution I came upon was to install a driver from here: https://www.realtek.com/en/component/zo . s-software
I downloaded the ‘2.5G Ethernet LINUX driver r8125 for kernel up to 5.6’ onto a different computer and got it onto my Linux computer but I’m really not sure how to install it. Here’s what’s in the driver file:

The README file has ‘quick install’ instructions. But here’s what happens when I follow the first step, ‘unpack the tarball’:

My ‘Network’ info is:
Device-1: Realtek RTL8125 2.5GbE, vendor: Micro-Star MSI, driver: N/A, port: 3000, bus ID: 02:00.0, chip ID: 10ec:8125

I’m totally new to Linux, so any help is appreciated. And I could definitely be mistaken at one or more points along the way so please take my report with a little bit of skepticism

Extract the archive contents using the file manager (right click the archive icon and choose extract here from the list of options). Open that new folder containing the driver, then open a terminal window by right clicking in an empty area of the file manager and choosing the option to do so which may be in an actions sub-menu) and type in the following command and then press enter. You will need to enter your password.
