Screen Won’t Lock
Post by ajgringo619 » Thu Aug 16, 2018 6:57 pm
Setting up a new Mint 19 VM. Everything is going great. except for some odd reason I can’t get the screen to lock anymore, either by the plugin or command line. I’m sure during my infinite tweaking that I accidentally disabled something — any ideas on what?

Plugin? On Cinnamon Ctrl-Alt-L locks the screen, on XFCE I believe it’s Ctrl-Alt-Del; if not, you’ll be able to tell by looking at the keyboard shortcuts in the XFCE settings. That is: you may want to disable that plugin.

Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing; already removed the plugin. I just don’t understand why it has stopped working. I’ve been running XFCE for 2 months now with no issues.

I checked Mint 19 Xfce 64-bit in a VirtualBox VM; indeed Ctrl-Alt-Del is the standard screen-lock shortcut (note, in a VirtualBox VM Ctrl-Alt == «Host Key», by default Right-Ctrl).
But. if you check Settings -> Keyboard -> «Application shortcuts» you find it invokes xflock4 which is supposedly the «command line» you spoke of. If indeed that does nothing neither then will Ctrl-Alt-Del / Host-Del. Xflock4 is a simple shell script: less $(which xflock4) . xscreensaver-command nor gnome-screensaver-command is installed by default on 19 Xfce but light-locker-command is. Did you happen to uninstall light-locker? Does a direct light-locker-command —lock report anything usable?
After you install xfconf, does xfconf-query -c xfce4-session -p /general/LockCommand report anything other than ‘Property «/general/LockCommand» does not exist on channel «xfce4-session»‘? It should not by default so if you have anything set there try and reset it with xfconf-query -c xfce4-session -p /general/LockCommand -r .
Hope this helps: need to be off to bed for now.

I appreciate all the help; didn’t see this right away. Somehow, during a flurry of reboots (issues with SMB and VirtualBox mounts in /etc/fstab), it works again. Sounds like a promo for a Microsoft support call, right?

Afaict, the permissions to execute the «xflock4» shell script are set to «Root», exclusively. However, even when trying to execute it with sudo, xflock4 still does nothing — your very own experience; obviously, there’s a bug in there somewhere . This finding applies to both LM19-xfce & LM18.3-xfce. Even activating the «Lock Screen» option in Xfce’s whisker-menu (Whisker-button > right click > Properties > Commands Tab > Lock Screen Option), configured to execute «xflock4», does nothing. However, i’ve successfully tried from a terminal screen xfce’s native «xfce4-session-logout —logout» command. It works just fine . saves my session, presents the login screen, and upon my login restores the state of my open apps. Can you try.
xfce4-session-logout --logout
and see if it works on your system?
PS: on my LM19-xfce test system, i edited whisker’s «Lock Screen» command using the foregoing (new) syntax, and it works just as well as when run from the terminal. As a temp workaround, its easy to add a button to your panel Iif that’s what you want). Good luck!
How to Disable/Enable Automatic Screen Lock in Linux Mint 20 trough CLI
Automatic screen lock is a feature provided by all widely used desktop operating systems. There is a default period of inactivity set in your system settings, after which your screen is automatically locked and you have to reactivate it by either clicking somewhere or entering your login password. This feature is best for scenarios when you need to stay away from your computer for some time and you have some critical data stored on your system. In the meantime, while you were away from your system, any intruder can break into the system and steal your critical data. For this reason, an automatic screen lock is very helpful to ensure the security of your data.
Automatic screen lock is enabled by default on most operating systems. On the other hand, if you are physically present near your computer and simply doing other tasks at the same time, then this automatic screen lock feature may prove to be annoying as you have to enter your password again and again after a few minutes of inactivity. In this situation, you can consider disabling your system’s screen lock feature for some time and then re-enabling it once you are done with your work. Today we will show you how to disable/enable the automatic screen lock via the Linux Mint 20 CLI.
Disabling Lock Screen on Linux Mint and Ubuntu
You can easily disable the automatic screen lock through Linux Mint 20 CLI by executing the following command in it:
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver lock-enabled false
This command will instantly disable the Linux Mint 20 automatic screen lock and it will not produce any output on the terminal as shown in the image below:
Enabling Lock Screen on Linux Mint and Ubuntu
You can conveniently enable the automatic screen lock through Linux Mint 20 CLI by executing the following command in it:
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver lock-enabled true
This command will instantly enable the Linux Mint 20 automatic screen lock and it will not produce any output on the terminal as shown in the image below:
Conclusion
In this article, we shared with you the quickest methods of disabling/enabling the automatic screen lock through Linux Mint 20 CLI. It is always recommended to keep the automatic screen locking feature enabled. However, if you do disable it for some time, then you must re-enable it once you have accomplished your task to save your computer system and the data residing in it from intruders.

Post by pepperminty » Sun Mar 25, 2012 4:31 am
Is there a keyboard shortcut to lock the screen/desktop? In ubuntu, the keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + L. But this shortcut doesn’t work in Linux Mint 11. Please help.

It’s Ctrl+Alt+L, not Ctrl+Shift+L, in both Mint and Ubuntu.
If that still doesn’t work you should find a keyboard shortcuts utility in the menu where you can check/define any necessary shortcuts.

I opened up the Keyboard Shortcuts utility program. Lock Screen’s shortcut is Ctrl + Alt + L (you’re right, I’m wrong). But when I press Ctrl+Alt+L, nothing happens. How come?

Oh, I figured it out. It’s a bug, I think.
Let me explain. I use the Dvorak keyboard layout in Linux. But for the keyboard shortcut to work, I have to press the Qwerty equivalent of the L key (which corresponds to the key which has the L key printed on my keyboard.) I was pressing the key that has the «P» letter printed, because the P key is L key in Dvorak. I remember that Ubuntu also has the same thing, so I went into the Keyboard Shortcut utility and changed the shortcut to Ctrl+Alt+P instead.
That’s a workaround. Wish the developers would fix this bug.

It worked for me with Ctrl+Alt+L

Screen lock (ctrl-alt-L or icon) does not work
Post by carmendixon » Fri Jun 21, 2013 12:24 pm
I’ve done a fresh install of Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon and am finding that I cannot lock my screen.
The keystroke ctrl-alt-l does nothing and when I click on the lock screen icon, it brings up the lock screen window to enter a message and after I enter one and click ok, nothing happens.
