Linux mint

«Unknown» display

Post by fbachofner » Sun Oct 06, 2013 2:15 pm

On a friend’s LinuxMint 15 Cinnamon notebook (Asus UX31A) all of a sudden there is an «unknown» display appearing in display settings.

This unknown display maxes out at 1024×768 pixels.

This is a problem, because when he wants to attach an external display and mirror the laptops screen (both of which support 1920×1080) everything is set to 1024×768 rendering everything too large (checking the mirror option will mirror the lowest resolution device among all displays).

How can we get rid of the ‘unknown» display (it appears even when nothing else is physically attached to the machine).

You had also better have the display connected when you power up the laptop, not just connect the external display while sleeping or still alive. At a minimum, you are going to have to restart the laptop after you connect the external display for it to have a chance of being detected properly.

The problem is that «unknown» display shows up in the Cinnamon displays applet whether the HDMI external display is connected OR NOT. Even from cold boot.

Somehow Mint suddenly feels as if there is another display available. [There IS a VGA port on this machine, but nothing has ever been plugged into it. ]

A VGA display option shows up in ARandR and is disabled . . . just like in the Cinnamon applet.

Is there a text file to edit so that the VGA port can be disabled? That would probably be a sufficient solution since this new problem seems to stem from that.

Disabling the VGA output would probably be through the BIOS/EFI if the option is available at all.

Sorry that the suggestion did not help.

What is the output of the terminal command xrandr with no options?

jim@jim-UX31A ~ $ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767 eDP1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 282mm x 165mm 1920x1080 60.0*+ 59.9 40.0 1680x1050 60.0 59.9 1600x1024 60.2 1400x1050 60.0 1280x1024 60.0 1440x900 59.9 1280x960 60.0 1360x768 59.8 60.0 1152x864 60.0 1024x768 60.0 800x600 60.3 56.2 640x480 59.9 VGA1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1024x768 60.0 800x600 60.3 56.2 848x480 60.0 640x480 59.9 HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

And of course the problem all seems to stem from the «VGA1 connected» section.

I’ll see whether the BIOS allows turning off the VGA output port, but I don’t think it does. Anyways, that output should allow 1920×1080 since the («updated,» i.e. not original) VGA spec does.

Other ideas would be appreciated. I would really hate to see this user lost back to Windows . . . not having the ability to mirror the notebook screen to a large external monitor at full resolution is tempting him to switch back. Argh!

The VGA1 output can be set to 1920×1080, but present listing does not support that resolution. Is this the reading with the external monitor connected or disconnected? From the listing, I would expect to have two displays connected, one connected tat 1920×1080, the other at 1024×768.

You can add the 1920×1080 resolution to VGA1 by the following lines in a terminal:

xrandr --newmode 1920x1080 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode VGA1 1920x1080 xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080
#!/bin/bash xrandr --newmode 1920x1080 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode VGA1 1920x1080 xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080

Save the file as, say, videomode.sh then do from a terminal window in the directory where you saved the videomode.sh script:

Arandr and xrandr should both confirm the new resolution for VGA1, but I don’t know if that will fix your mirroring problem.
