Using Linux Mint v20.2 MATE

Seeking advice on where to find location of Linux Mint Menu icons, please.

I can click Menu with the Right mouse button and choose Preferences and from the window displayed see the item Button icon under General, but that does not take me to the location where the icons are.

You can find the Mint-X or Mint-Y icons under
/user/share/icons/.
then it depends what exactly you are looking for. It’s best to have a look at the icons-folder with Caja first to get an impression what icons are available in the different subfolders.

When the «Choose an icon» dialog box is open, you can also enter a keyword, for example the program name and see what’s offered.

Sometimes it works right away, sometimes you have to search folder by folder until you find what you are looking for.

Hi absque fenestris

Thank you for your prompt reply. My bad, as it is now obvious I didn’t explain what I wanted adequately

I now attach a screenshot and ask where is the location of the icons shown. I have trawled through /usr/share/icons but have failed to find them.

Hi tenfoot
I have now searched quite a few icon folders in the home and system directories and have not found anything. Some of the icons from your screenshot are in usr/share/icons/Mint-X/places/. but again you have to look in each subfolder.

Thank you again. I appreciate you sticking with this.

I navigated to usr/share/icons and searched in the Humanity folder as I use that theme, There is nothing in that folder which appears when one chooses Preferences/Button icon. A search of the other Theme folders reveals that many are the same. So, where do those icons live

In previous versions of Linux Mint there was an icon clearly labelled mint.menu, but it doesn’t exist now.

I particularly like an icon designed by a troken, who is a member of the Forum, and wanted to use that for my menu panel icon but unless I know the location of those items which appear in Preferences/Button icon I am on a lost cause.

If this bug report is related to an Applet, Desklet or Extension, please paste (or use a pastebin service) the offending extension’s settings, if it has any. Please be sure to review the contents and remove any personal data it may contain.

The syslog would take hours to read.
I DID try the recent files thing. I eliminated those, and attempted a «reboot». No go, it’s ok, it boots, I can access EVERYTHING, just nothing showing up in the panel, and all the icons are gone. And I get a message that something crashed. DUH, I know that.
thanks if anyone can help, I am at a total loss. 35 years of doing computers, and this comes up!

[SOLVED] Menu Icon Missing

Post by EmpireITtech » Tue Dec 10, 2013 2:50 pm

Hey all, I recently installed Mint 16 Cinnamon on my laptop for testing. I’ve been using Mint now since the release of Mint 13 Maya on this same laptop. I always do a fresh/full install FYI. With this one, after the 2nd or 3rd restart, the little «LM» Menu Icon disappears from my panel. I try changing it, moving the menu.png to another folder and re-attaching it. It’s strange, I’ve even completely reinstalled LM16 3 times on the laptop to see if it was just the one install. This also happened on LM16 RC too. There is still a blank space where the icon would normally be, and again the icon is there after the initial install and the first few restarts.
Any ideas?

Cinnamon menu icon location

Post by Widmore » Wed Jan 01, 2020 10:41 pm

I love the new selection method for the menu ‘start’ icon in 19.3.
What I’m wondering though, where are these icons located? Specifically, the ones in the «Linux Mint» category. I’m looking to recolor one to fit the theme I’m using.

Try this: right click menu>configure>menu tab>menu editor>highlight application category>properties>click icon and browse to desired icon, highlight it, open, select it in next window.

Usually, icons can be found in /usr/share/icons . The best way to find what you’re looking for is to install catfish. In it’s advanced preferences, exclude /proc/ then search the entire file system.

The Mint logos are in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps . I’d suggest copying the icons of interest to your home folder in ~/.icons/hicolor/scalable/apps to edit.

mkdir -p ~/.icons/hicolor/scalable/apps
cp /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/linuxmint-* ~/.icons/hicolor/scalable/apps

Edit to add — if you rename your modified icon but you want it to show up in the Linux Mint Category you’ll need to edit your menu config — ~/.cinnamon/configs/menu@cinnamon.org/*.json to add it to the list.
