Hello guys and greetings from Brazil! Here’s a little tutorial I’ve created to enable the NumLock button to activate automatically at the Login screen, and stay on after that. It’s designed for Linux Mint Cinammon Rosa 17.3 but I’m sure it works for other versions too. This is useful if you use the number keypad a lot (like I do), and especially if your passwords are all numeric (like mine are). Let’s begin!

1) Download the application numlockx via terminal (administrator password is required):
sudo apt-get install numlockx

2) Edit the Default file that controls what Linux Mint starts at boot:
sudo nano /etc/mdm/Init/Default

3) Go to the end of this file and insert the code below BEFORE the last line «exit 0«:
if [ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ]; then
/usr/bin/numlockx on
fi

4) Hold the keys CTRL X and type Y to exit saving the changes to the file

5) On your desktop, now go to:
Menu —> Preferences —> StartUp Applications

6) Click on Add and select Custom command

7) A window will pop up. Enter the following info:
for Name, type: numlockx
for Command, type: /usr/bin/numlockx
for Comment, you can leave it blank
for Startup delay, type: 0

7) Click on Save and close the Startup Applications window

You’re all done! Next time you reboot or start your computer, the NumLock key will be automatically activated at the login screen and remain on after that. Have fun!

И так, немного угнетает тот факт, что приходится механически включать NumLock при запуске Linux. Я решил перевести статью, так же добавить в нее другие способы включения NumLock разбросных по интернету.
Способ 1. Ubuntu
для Ubuntu 12.04 — 13.10
1) Скачиваем программу numlockx через терминал Способ 4. Подходит для KDE
1) Меню Mint > клавиатура > оборудование > режим NumLock при запуске Plasma — выбрать «Включить» Это всё что я нашёл

Situation: When I turn on my Linux Mint 20/19/18/17 Cinnamon the NumLock is Off in the Login window. Objective: Turn on NumLock automatically at startup in the Login window.

For all versions of Linux Mint

You need to install a program needed for this purpose — numlockx ; man page: Choose if you wish to achieve the goal through CLI or GUI below.

Linux Mint 20.x / 19.x (LightDM)

Once numlockx is installed, the following menu item in Login Window -> Settings called: becomes available; as you can see: This will add the line: to the following file:

Linux Mint 18.x / 17.x (MDM)

GUI; probably most convenient under normal operation: Once numlockx is installed, the following menu item in Login Window -> Options called:

becomes available; as you can see: As pointed out in the other answer, this will add the following line to /etc/mdm/mdm.conf : CLI; suitable if you are setting other computers up through SSH, for instance: Open a text editor you are skilled in with this file, e.g. nano if unsure: Add these lines at the beginning of the file: As pointed out by Gilles, don’t put exec in front of the command.

Как влючить автоматически NumLock при входе в систему Ubuntu

Для настольных компьютеров и ноутбуков, которые имеют отдельный цифровой блок, в Центре приложений Ubuntu есть утилита под названием numlockx, после установки которой и добавления а автозагрузку, NumLock будет автоматически включён при входе в систему Ubuntu. Нажмите на ссылку ниже, чтобы вызвать Центр приложений Ubuntu и установить numlockx. Или выполните команду в терминале на установку:

sudo apt-get install numlockx Затем откройте Автоматически запускаемые приложения, нажмите на кнопке Добавить, в поле Имя введите NumLock, а в поле Команда: numlockx Вот и всё. Теперь ваш цифровой блок на клавиатуре будет включён автоматически при входе в систему.

У меня этот блок и без этого работает всегда. Или я чего-то недопонял. Работать он у всех работает без проблем после нажатия кнопки NumLock, а статья о том, чтобы кнопку не нажимать и NumLock был включён при входе.

Странно. У меня NumLock всегда включен. При входе в систему сам включается. Я не нажимаю. И дома, и на работе, и в винде, и в убунте. Правда, было на одном компе такое, что после установки убунты, при первом входе не загорелся NumLock. Я его включил, комп. перезагрузил — и теперь горит сам, при входе, без нажатия. Может дело в клавиатуре. У меня везде Genius. Николай, у меня на ноуте та же фигня. Только что узнал что это проблема в KDE нет такой проблемы-в настройках указываешь опцию и всё-не знаю ,правда -что за окружение у вас

Очень нужный пост, а я давно искал, как это сделать в Lubuntu 14.04 В моём случае пришлось ещё отредактировать файл gksudo gedit /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-unity-greeter.conf
Дописав строку greeter-setup-script=/usr/bin/numlockx on Этом способ мне помог , очень радуюсь теперь , не верю своему счастью. Спасибо! А вот мне это блок с NumLock вообще не нужен. Привык как то обходиться циферками по верхнему ряду. Привычка осталась со времён использования клавиатуры компа ZX Spectrum ))) Да и на нетбуке клавиатура в верхним рядом кнопок только присутствует. А вот большая клава на домашнем втором компе даже бесит, большое желание отпилить этот блок, что бы клава не такая длинная была. Сергей, как говорится, нам очень интересны ваши поведенческие паттерны в аспекте использования клавиатур.

Есть такое дело. Но это не только у Ubuntu, но и вообще у свободного ПО. У LibreOffice, например. Вместо устранения очевидных проблем развитие идёт в сторону украшательства и свистелок. Причины этого можно разбирать долго, но так оно есть и из этого надо исходить. С тем же Num Lock — ну, сделать, чтобы включался по-умолчанию, а кому он не нужен, пусть себе сам допиливает и отпиливает часть клавиатуры с циферками. Ан, нет. Спасибо огромное. Давно настраивал себе автоматическое его включение, но видать не донастроил. Источник

Post by gimme4 » Thu Nov 01, 2012 5:55 am Hi everyone, I’m not sure this post is in the right place but I’m sure that it will be moved if it isn’t.
I am running mint 13 mate with compiz, My problem is that when i boot my laptop up the num lock light comes on ( enabled in bios ), but as soon as mint gets hold of the system the light goes off, My login password is all numbers and it is so much easier to use the number pad, is there any way to get the num lock to be enabled so that I can enter my password easily, please remember that I am a NOOB so step by step instructions would be appreciated.

Post by killer de bug » Fri Nov 02, 2012 9:00 am Outchhhhh ! My mistake ! I didn’t realize that you were using MATE. Sorry for that. You could have replaced gedit by pluma in the command line and that would have work like a charm. Sorry for that. You can uninstall gedit now

I had the same problem as gimme4 and it seems that this is a common issue.
I have fixed this issue on Fedora17 in the past but didn’t make any notes of it so I goggled to this tread I’m just installed LinuxMint 13 Maya / Cinnamon 64-bit with updates for the back ported issues and things are starting to look nice but then I have the num lock issue before logging in.
— Added numlockx with Synaptic
— Edited the Default as killer de bug suggests, no problem On reboot the Num Lock key lit up and I can enter the login credentials containing numbers without the need to enable Num Lock every time
BUT immediate when I have logged in it is turned off I’d like to keep it always on since it’s a keyboard with separate numerical keypad.
Any ideas?

Post by rosenhof » Fri Jan 11, 2013 4:12 am The strange behaviour that turned off Num Lock immediate after login occurred once, the first time after I applied this (on reboot) but later on during the night it worked perfect so I guess that it was some hiccup the first time and it’s not an issue any more. Thanks for the tips!

I was successful in getting numlockx installed in Mint 8 but I couldn’t do it through the Synaptic package manager because all of the repositories are long since dead . I won’t go into the gory details of how I found everything, but here was the solution: From: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu . /numlockx/
I downloaded: numlockx_1.1-10build1_i386.deb to my USB thumb drive at /media/artwork/linux/general
«artwork» is the label of my Thumbdrive, and /linux/general is the path to my working folder. From a Terminal session:
mint@mint # dpkg -i /media/artwork/linux/general/numlockx_1.1-10_i386.deb

This installed numlockx thus enabling the on, off, and toggle options for the numlockx command! Blessings in abundance, all the best, & ENJOY!

Маленький хак — включение NumLock при старте в Ubuntu\Debian\Mint

Такое себе маленькое удобство для тех, кто привык вводить пароль при входе в систему на цифровой клавиатуре(как я). В Bios Setup любого компьютера есть опция — Boot Up NumLock= ON\OFF. Но и Windows, и Linux-системы сто лет как игнорируют это условие. Если в Виндоус, как ни странно, — решение проще, достаточно при выключении\перезагрузке оставить нумлок включенным, то в Линукс метод не работает, система все-равно при загрузке его выключит.

Решение, как и все в Linux, — простое.

Нужна маленькая утилитка numlockx:

sudo apt-get install numlockx

Ну, и второе действие — добавить ее в автозагрузку средствами графической оболочки, или как описано в статье.
Все, NumLock включен при старте. Утилита работает во всех дистрибутивах.
