Desktop Icon One Click Launch

Desktop settings doesn’t have an option for one click Icon launch

Can’t seem to find this setting anywhere

Launch Nemo (File Manager) > Edit > Preferences > Change to «Behavior» tab and select «Single click to open items». This is for 17.3 but it should be similar or the same in 18.x; I haven’t tried the new Cinnamon editions yet.

You’re welcome! Anyway that does catch people out. I’ve had single-click ever since it was an option in Windows (98?) as never saw the point of double-click on a desktop, where there isn’t a «File» menu to actually do anything with «selected» items. It’s not intuitive and in fact I find it rather difficult to get the timing right as I do not have the required «muscle memory» any more.

Your mouse or trackpad buttons will last twice as long too.

Double-tap would make a lot more sense on touchscreen devices where accidental activation is all-too-easy. But not on the Desktop, at least in my opinion.

Found it thanks. Iv’e noticed it has a lot of choices have the creators of Mint considered putting it at the top as a separate menu item say between bookmarks and help? Just a thought.

How to Create File/Folder Shortcut in Linux Mint 19.3 with One Click (Nemo)

There are two ways of creating shortcut in Linux Mint:

Create File/Folder Shortcut in Nemo

To create a shortcut using the file explorer, simply follow the steps below:

• Open Nemo
• Select the file or the folder
• Press CTRL + Shift
• Drag and drop the selected file or folder

A new shortcut file with the name pattern — Link to is created in the same location.

The shortcut can be moved to another folder or the Desktop.

Create Shortcuts in terminal

If you want to create a shortcut(symlink) in the terminal you can use the next command.

To create create a symbolic link of folder /home/Documents which is at /mnt/docs :

ln -s /home/Documents /mnt/docs 

If you like to find more about command ln check:

Note: Using command ln will create a shortcut with the same name as the original folder.

Check and Follow Shortcut

Once the shortcut is create it can be followed from the context menu:

• Right Click on Shortcut ( it will appear arrow in the right bottom corner)
• Follow link to original file

The Shortcuts are displayed differently from folders:

One Click Shutdown?

Is there a way to avoid the three click shutdown necessary on Mint 17.2 and remove the useless Hibernate and Suspend options?
It seems such a clunky way to shutdown/restart, click Menu, click icon, click Shutdown or Restart. Even Win 7 is faster than this and it allows you to choose a default option.
Plus how do I get rid of the useless(for me) Hibernate and suspend options?

I’ve configured things so that when I tap my power button it shuts down the computer. I have no idea how to set that up in Cinnamon, though. You might look in whatever it uses as a power management app. For that matter, it may already be configured that way, but I’ve also seen «do nothing,» and suspend happen when I’ve tapped the power button on other people’s computers, so you may have to change the setting.

Mint 18 Xfce 4.12.

You can set in the settings for the power management how the power button shall react. Choose the option you like.

You can also select between several additional applets for what you want. You can install the applets directly via the applet settings.

No, I can’t. It means hardware power button settings but OP and me need the same option for Software power button.

SO. here is a Suggestion!
Another option in Power settings called how the Software power button should react with this dropdown menu:
1. Open Shutdown Menu (current menu with 3 options: Restart, Cancel, Shutdown).
2. Restart (instantly restarts your PC when you Left-click it and shows other options when you Right-click it).
3. Shutdown (instantly shutdowns your PC when you Left-click it and shows other options when you Right-click it).
4. Hibernate (instantly hibernates your PC when you Left-click it and shows other options when you Right-click it).
I spent some serious time on this suggestion including drawing as I’m not pro in it so please consider it. This will increase usability without any drawbacks. FULL PICTURE LINK HERE

Open Nemo, the file Manager. Edit then Preferences. In the left Pane, select Behavior and click on Single click to open items.

He’s using Mate, not Cinnamon, so his file manager is Caja, not Nemo (unless Pjotr’s right ).

Open Caja Preferences, and in the Behavior tab, select «Singe click to open items.» You can open preferences by going into any folder, and in the menu: Edit >> Preferences.
