Live User Name and Password
Post by borgward » Wed May 06, 2020 5:48 pm
Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.1 32bit Live Session
On boot it displays «Live Session User» — Will boot in 20 Seconds
You can also enter Password and boot immediately if you know it.
After running and it self locks and asks for username and password. I tried mint, admin, user for password nothing works. I then have to shutdown and reboot.
What is the User Name?
What is the Password?

When you installed mint some where along the way you would have been asked to set a user name and password. For example, I am not in a shared space and declined a log on password but did set an administrative password. Any time I want to make any kind of changes or view admin files I must «authenticate» with my admin password. You can see what kinds of passwords you have enabled by entering the BIOS and look under the Security tab.

Did you notice I said «Live Session» That means it is running live from the optical drive. It is not installed.

That only works when booting. Once the screensaver comes on it requires a password. You can enter the user name «mint»‘ leave the password empty and hit enter but nothing happens.
Also need password for sudo. I tried to install hardinfo using sudo from the command line but that requires a password.
Would be nice if hardinfo was part of the live package especially if you are trying to repair someones computer.

Something sounds off to me. I’ve not read of any changes to this.
Is it possible this isn’t a Live version of Mint and is an actual install to a USB stick?
EDIT: Just saw optical drive. Something is still odd though.

I went to Settings — Screensaver and told it to never activate. That works for this session. I was able to sudo hardinfo this time w/out having to enter password.

Try apt install hardinfo . Worked for me (tested with 18.1 ISO booted in VBox), no password required.

Newer versions have an enhanced System Report function built-in. Also available, since forever, lshw .
In any event, the devs aren’t going to include every package anyone might want.

hardinfo would help expedite the use of life session in repair or installation. I don’t think system report goes into as much detail. You are right lshw is very detailed, but not as easy to read at a glance as hardinfo is.

You’re making a mountain out of a molehill. Doesn’t come up all that often. When it does, not hard to install on the fly.
You can submit a feature request, but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t get picked up.

What is the default password for a Linux Mint live usb
Im sure some else has had this problem before, but I can’t seem to find a proper answer. What is the default password for a linux mint live usb? Most of the other answers say that my install would be corrupt if it is asking me; however, I need to know because I am trying to ssh into it.
I think it will be difficult to ssh into a live Mint system. But you can create an installed system in a USB drive (installed like into an internal drive). And then there will be no problem to install openssh-server and log in remotely.
But I know that at least some versions of Debian live use the username user and the password live . So if you want to log into a (persistent) live system, you can try Debian.
I found this way to connect to a persistent live Ubuntu based distro via ssh: Create a second user with a password. See more details in my answer.

The username for the live session is mint . If asked for a password press Enter .
No (publicly known) password for the default user
There is no (publicly known) password for the default user in Ubuntu based flavours and distros. When asked for a password, for example to run sudo, you simply press the Enter key. But ssh wants a password, so it does not work to log in remotely via ssh into a persistent live drive.
Create a second user with a password
I found a way to connect to a persistent live Ubuntu based distro via ssh. I tested with a recent iso file of Lubuntu Eoan (to be released as 19.10), but I think the method is general and should work for many versions, flavours and re-spins based on Ubuntu including Linux Mint.
- Create a persistent live drive with mkusb from your iso file.
- Boot into your persistent live system
- Install tools
sudo apt install gnome-system-tools
sudo apt install openssh-server
Demo input and output

You can see that the root file system / has the same properties as the casper-rw partition. It indicates that it is a persistent live system. You can also see that it is possible to switch user to the default user (here ‘lubuntu’).
