How to switch to AMD Radeon Graphics instead of using Intel?
Post by TheEpicBlade » Thu May 19, 2022 2:24 pm
I’m struggling to find out how to use the discrete graphics instead of integrated graphics.
I want to do that, my iGPU is literally suffering on everything because it’s too old.
OS: Linux Mint 20.3 MATE
Laptop: HP Pavilion DV6 3113et
CPU: i5 460m
Integrated GPU: Intel HD Graphics
Discrete GPU: AMD Radeon HD 5650
I was able to switch between AMD and Intel graphics by using CCC on Win7, but I don’t know how to do that on Linux.
I tried the «echo MDIS > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch» command, but unfortunately it just gave me a black screen, luckily I was able to fix it by typing the same command (without seeing anything) but typing MIGD instead of MDIS.

Welcome to the forum, TheEpicBlade.
Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:
Click >from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code tags and paste the results of the command between the code tags
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware and verify if all the drivers are installed properly.

Actually, I didn’t have installed anything special, it’s the «vga switcheroo» thing (https://01.org/linuxgraphics/gfx-docs/d . heroo.html)
Also, here’s the «inxi -Fxxxrz» output.

This part of the output shows which GPU is the primary renderer. It is currently Intel, but it is likely both are loaded. The display drivers for both GPUs are loaded.
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel Core Processor Integrated Graphics vendor: Hewlett-Packard
driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:0046
Device-2: AMD Madison [Mobility Radeon HD 5650/5750 / 6530M/6550M]
vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: radeon v: kernel bus ID: 01:00.0
chip ID: 1002:68c1
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: ati,modesetting,radeon
unloaded: fbdev,vesa compositor: marco v: 1.26.0 resolution: 1366×768~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphic s (ILK) v: 2.1 Mesa 21.2.6
direct render: Yes
Starting with this post is more information about the general set-up of your laptop in the «How to disable Intel HD on-board to force AMD GPU use» topic.
If you run DRI_PRIME=1 in a terminal and then run inxi -Gx , I expect you will see the renderer change. That command changes the renderer for the current session. It will be gone when you reboot or restart the session. There are also options for changing it to just run with one specific program or setting an environment variable so it always starts with the Radeon as the primary renderer.
If you have questions about something in the other topic, just let us know.
I presume you have this small partition because you are just testing Linux Mint. We do not recommend installs that small.
