Post by Valtsu » Sun Jun 05, 2016 5:13 am
Sooo, i have installed festival speech tts(finnish suopuhe tts to be specific) , now i just should get the orca screen reader working but it just won’t open. It appears to the workpanel and it shows that it’s opening like for 10 secs and then it goes away.

Orca is a Gnome application. It works on Cinnamon but I’ve not managed to get it working on other desktop environments. Here’s what is says when I try to start it from Konsole:
** (orca:4232): WARNING **: Error retrieving accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/orca", line 251, in sys.exit(main()) File "/usr/bin/orca", line 248, in main return orca.main() File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/orca/orca.py", line 745, in main if not _settingsManager.isAccessibilityEnabled(): File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/orca/settings_manager.py", line 342, in isAccessibilityEnabled return _proxy.Get('(ss)', 'org.a11y.Status', 'IsEnabled') File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/gi/overrides/Gio.py", line 171, in __call__ None) gi._glib.GError: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files
Does it say something else for you?
For KDE there is Jovie, which is a text-to-speech library that programs can use. So unlike Orca, it’s not a system-wide text-to-speech solution. After starting Jovie from your menu you can enable text-to-speech in selected programs. For example in Kate, you can enable Jovie in the plugins. Then you’ll find «Speak Text» menu option at the end of the Tools menu to speak text.
Accessibility for people with visual impairments is best in Gnome Shell.

Orca Screen Reader Accessibility in Mint and Cinnamon
Post by PlanetLinux98 » Tue Feb 26, 2019 5:07 pm
As a mostly-blind Linux user, I use Orca Screen Reader (built into GNOME, and therefore Cinnamon) regularly. However, there seems to be issues with it in Linux Mint and Cinnamon as a whole that prevent it from working properly. Firstly, the typical shortcut to toggle it on and off (Alt+Super+S) does not seem to be assigned. That said, when it is turned on via the Screen Reader option in the Accessibility settings page, the system immediately gets very sluggish, almost freezing up, which should not and does not happen in other distros such as Ubuntu MATE or Antergos (Arch). After a few minutes, it seems to clear up, however occasionally turns back off randomly.
Assuming it stays on and the system starts running properly again, Orca can read most of the open application windows such as Firefox and the desktop icons, but does not seem to work with any of the Cinnamon elements (such as the panel or menu). Opening the menu simply announces the text search box but will not read any of the application items as they are arrowed through. Similarly, there is no way to navigate the elements of the panel with the keyboard.
I realize that some of these things may involve additional development on behalf of the Orca devs, but the screen reader doesn’t have the sluggishness and randomly turning off issues in most other distros so I can’t help but think that is a Linux Mint or Cinnamon issue. I know that these forums may not be the ideal place to enquire about this, so I am wondering if these is a GitHub page or something similar for Mint or specifically Mint accessibility that someone could point me to.
Thank you for any assistance and information you can provide.

How to turn off Screen Reader? (Linux Mint 20 XFCE 64-bit)
Post by RepublicPriest » Mon Aug 16, 2021 12:15 am
I use Linux Mint 20 (XFCE, 64-bit). Every time I turn on my computer, the Screen Reader turns on during the Login screen. How do I permanently turn off the Screen Reader so I don’t have to hear it every time I turn my computer on?

Click the accessibility (stick man) icon and select the screen reader option. You should notice the left check mark disappears indicating it is now off.

You did not provide the least information: Version of Mint, desktop environment, which screen reader?
If you don’t know the system specs open a terminal and enter:

Try looking in your Settings/Preferences/Accessibility.
This should open with the Seeing tab and Screen Reader can be turned off there.

How can I turn the Screen Reader voice in Mint 18.3 Mate ‘OFF’ once it’s activated? Or, better yet, what would I look for in Synaptic in order to completely uninstall the Screen Reader? ..Thanks

Cannot disable/turn off screen reader
Post by ltrtiger » Fri Oct 16, 2020 12:10 pm
I’ve searched and tried the possible solutions listed on this and some other websites with no luck. I’ve toggled screen reader on/off in accessibility and restarted. I’ve set a keyboard shortcut for screen reader and toggled it on and off using that method and rebooted. Still the screen reader autostarts and is active at the login screen prompting me to enter a password. It doesn’t seem to be active beyond the login screen though. Any ideas on how to shut this thing down? If not, how can I completely and safely remove it from my system? I’m at my wits end. Any help would be appreciated.
