Reboot and try. If it doesnt work
from a terminal.
.x0-lock is a file to prevent running 2 instances of xorg.
Then follow the thread in your post
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [ SOLVED] t o your first post title , it helps other users looking for help.

Linux Mint fails to start X automatically after update, but X still works
After some update and reboot, X fails to start. I don’t get any errors or warnings from the console, after the last service has started, nothing happens. I can then switch to any terminal I’d like, log in and start X with startx. This works perfectly fine. Prior to this there doesn’t seem to be any attempt to start X (I removed the logs in /var/log/X* and rebooted, no logs were then generated after I logged in). I’m now running 3.5.0-17-generic on Linux Mint 14 Nadia (XFCE). I’m using the proprietary Nvidia drivers (although bear in mind X starts perfectly fine with startx). How can I make X start automatically again? What is the reason I experience this behaviour from the system? Edit: I can add that I’ve tried to reinstall the proprietary Nvidia drivers (and they installed successfully), I get hardware acceleration and everything seems to work fine after I’ve started X with startx. Second edit: I have S30mdm in /etc/rc2.d/ which points to /etc/init.d/mdm

In some occasions Infinality font rendering can cause problems when loading the Display Manager.
If you have infinality installed and reconfiguring mdm doesn’t works, try to:
sudo apt-get remove fontconfig-infinality
you can also reconfigure mdm as follows:
this way it won’t be necessary to install mdm again, task that may become hard
sudo mv /etc/profile.d/infinality-settings.sh /etc/infinality-settings.sh sudo chmod a+rx /etc/infinality-settings.sh
# INFINALITY FONT RENDERING CONFIG . /etc/infinality-settings.sh
To make infinality started after mdm. I use this way to workaround this problem when I was using mint15 MATE
apt-get remove mdm apt-get install mdm
I had this exact same problem, and none of the solutions here worked me. After many hours of struggling, and logs showing no errors, I found that my problem was (surprisingly) the result of an unrelated syntax error in /etc/profile.d/myscript.sh . Fixing my script fixed the issue for me.
So far, the best answer I’ve found, in the case of versions of Mint based upon Ubuntu 14.04 (17.01 through 17.03) is to apt-get remove mdm, but NOT to reinstall it. It’s a lousy, terrible solution, and it doesn’t «solve» the problem, exactly, since none of the forgoing has worked, but, it does leave you a workable system. The system will boot to the «LM» logo «splash» screen and just seem to hang there. Simply press «alt F1» to get a command-prompt (a useful thing to have in my book. You can do some pretty handy system maintenance-type things with that command-prompt!). Then, login at the command prompt, and type «startx». X will start properly, even though MDM is missing.
I know this solution is not a real «solution», but it sure beats an unbootable system that never arrives at any sort of prompt, which is what I ended up with several times while trying to troubleshoot this silly problem.
For what it’s worth, it appears that this problem is caused by NOT using the GUI updater «Update Manager», and being stupid and lazy and using «apt-get update» from the command-line, which I did. (The Update Manager has an annoying habit of allowing one to install only one package at a time. One can batch all desired packages into one update command from the command-line, which I tend to prefer. I don’t know why I didn’t just use Synaptic. Oops.)
Will try to post later if I find the root cause of this particular issue.

failed to start x server
Post by stanstan » Tue Nov 12, 2019 2:37 pm
I have just installed Linux Mint 18 on a laptop. Linux won’t start properly, the message is ‘failed to start the x server».
The problem seems to have been around for a while and I have tried several advises from several sites, but nothing works. The strange thing is, that after I press Ctrl-Alt-F2 and sign on I can type ‘startx’ and there she is: Linux works fine. So, there seems to be a ‘startx’ that functions, but Linux may have difficulty finding is.

Hi,
LM is on 19.2, soon to be 19.3.
As you’ve got a new installation, it might be worth your while installing 19.2 which will save the possibly problematic upgrade path.

you could have a try with the following command:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall mint-meta-cinnamon
Taken fom this solved thread:
Re: failed to start x server

the command «sudo apt-get install —reinstall mint-meta-cinnamon» had no effect. Installing 19.2 did, but still there is something weird: I have to log in twice. First in terminal-mode and then once again in the normal Linux-screen.
Do you have a suggestion how to fix that?

dpkg --get-selections | grep lightdm apt install --reinstall lightdm

dpkg is not available on my laptop, but I did perform the second line «apt install lightdm». The response was that the latest version of lightdm (1.26.0ubuntu1) already is available on my laptop, so no installation was performed.
Do you have another suggestion.

This is very strange, because it should be installed. For example at every update in the update manager it is used. Then go to the Synaptic Package Manager in the menu and search for «dpkg». If it is really not installed, install it. And if it is installed, then re-install it.

I tried the statement ‘dpkg — get-selections | grep lightdm’ again. The message I got was ‘error: need an action-option’. I translated the message from dutch, so it might be a bit off.
Further have I noticed that if I do not login the first time (in the terminal-mode), Linux will eventually proceed to the normal mode, where I can login in the normal screen. Does that suggest that I just have to be more patient and nothing is wrong? I do have Linux (18) installed on two desktop-pc’s and on those machines this situation does not happen.

Yes, that’s it. Between the Mint logo and the login screen occurs normally only short a terminal login prompt. Then in your case it lasts a little bit longer, so that you think you have to login there, too. On the startup in the grub menu (If you don’t see it, press Shift or Esc a few times), use the «e» key to edit grub starting option. Scroll down and find the line with «quiet splash» and delete quiet splash and go on with the system start, so you the can see the startup processes. Maybe you find a hint, why it hangs at that point. After the next boot, the system start runs again with «quiet splash».

dpkg --get-selections | grep lightdm apt reinstall lightdm

I have followed both your advises.
This one succeeded:
dpkg —get-selections | grep lightdm
apt install —reinstall lightdm
But I had no effect, still it seems like I have to log on twice. Although now I know I don’t have to, just have to be more patient.
I managed to turn off the quiet splash in the grub-file. As expected a lot of information was shown, whilst starting. But I have no idea what to think of that information. In the end it halted again for a while for the first login.
