Mint 19.3 boots to text prompt !
Post by BobsterMinto » Thu May 28, 2020 9:20 am
Hi all,
I’m running Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia on a Lenovo ThinkPad.
It was booting fine until today.
When I boot now instead of the usual Mint Logon screen, it has presented me with a couple of lines of text
obviously I have substituted my computer name for in the above.
I have tried entering my name and p/w I get the following
«Last Login: on tty1
@:$»
the cursor just hangs around after the «$» waiting for something.
Can anyone tell me why the usual boot doesn’t work, and what I do from here.
I’m not great at Linux and can’t think what else to do other than reinstall, which would be a huge pain in the arse.

You said it was booting normally before so the first thing to check is permissions. You might have changed them while experimenting.
drwxrwxr-x 74 your-nick your-nick 12K May 27 11:40 /home/your-nick
sudo chown your-nick:your-nick /home/your-nick sudo chmod 775 /home/your-nick

the first command produced
«/home/my-nick»
I’ve typed in the next 2 lines, and I have the cursor waiting for me, can you tell me what happens next ?
cheers

Try rebooting and see if it works.
If not, in the console try this
sudo chown -R $USER:$USER $HOME

Your choice, of course, but probably not difficult to rescue this one.
FYI, a tty console is almost identical to Terminal. Same commands work in both. So, when you see bob@computer:~$ (or whatever the carefully-redacted user@ actually says), that’s the same thing as the prompt arrow in Terminal. As for the problem, I suspect your root partition is full. To check, boot, login to the tty console, and run inxi -p . First line will tell you how much space is used on the root partition.
If it says 100% (or nearly so), report back and we can walk you through how to clear enough space so you can boot the regular way.

tty1 on boot [SOLVED]
Post by Simon_linux_mint » Wed Jan 08, 2020 9:55 am
Straight to the point here. Not going to lie. I had linux mint 19.2 Tina installed and I have been messing around with it.
Last time I was using the operating system I was messing with weechat application.
I uninstalled python 3 during which I was prompted by the terminal not to do so because it may harm my system. I uninstalled it anyway.
After all this I realised I could not open any files or folders or directory on my system.
Now I am met with a tty1 screen.
After entering the log in user and pass I get this error
/etc/update-motd.d/80-esm: 3: /etc/update-motd.d/80-esm: lsb_release: not found
/etc/update-motd.d/80-esm: 4: /etc/update-motd.d/80-esm: lsb_release: not found
[91.691674] could not find key with description: [4326bfe0e5faa50a]
[91.691725] could not find valid key in user session keying for sig specified in mount option [4326bfe0e5faa50a]
[91.691789] error parsing options; RC = [-2]
I am not bothered about access the operating system and I have installation disk for linux mint to hand so a new install would be good.
However when i insert the linux mint iso disk I get the same errors
So I need help to access my operating system and or install a fresh copy.

Mint TTY1 login
Post by AZgl1800 » Thu Jul 18, 2019 10:39 am
I have a new laptop that won’t let me boot 18.3 Cinnamon ISO normally,
it stops with this message:
So, I tried to boot it in Advanced Compatibility Mode, and it proceeds further and presents this TTY login. I have no clue what the parameters for this login are supposed to be. I obviously did not create this password as it is on the ISO flash drive. Even if I got into this login, I don’t know the command set to use with it.
the laptop is a ASUS TUF gaming laptop which I am beginning to wish I had never seen, much less bought the damn thing. It won’t let me install Linux Mint 18.3 or lower, it will install 19.1 but even that is not reliable, it crashes most of the time. I am trying to do a new install, but this is becoming near impossible because the ISO won’t boot.
The BIOS is date stamped August 2018

[SOLVED] Stuck in TTY1 after updating nvidia drivers
Post by Spacebar » Fri Jun 26, 2020 4:25 am
I’ve been using Linux Cinnamon for half a year on a custom built PC. This is my first Linux computer and I’ve been happily using it as an alternative to Windows, but I’m very inexperienced and don’t know any commands for command line stuff. So sorry if this is a very dumb noob question and I just missed the solution in some other thread.
Current problem is on boot up I get sent straight to tty1 login (which I didn’t even know about till now) and I don’t know how to go back to normal operation. Based on other threads where people were stuck in tty1 I was at least able to log in and try to run startx, but I. don’t actually have a clue what the output means or what to do with the info. I put the output in the photo at the bottom along with the inxi info.
I restart my desktop regularly for updates including earlier today without issue. So I’m fairly sure what caused the problem was I wanted to try installing Lutris. I was following the instructions here and enabled 32bit architecture, updated NVIDIA drivers, and installed vulkan seemingly without issue. I did then try to install wine from the terminal according to these instructions, but it failed giving some error code related to broken packages. That was when I remembered that I skipped the step to reboot after updating all the graphics drivers, but upon rebooting I was greeted by the tty1 screen I can’t get out of now.
I do know an easy solution would be to just use Timeshift from my USB Linux stick as I did set up Timeshift to collect regular backups, but I don’t know when the last back up was made and I’d like to see if there is at least a simple fix to get out of tty1 for future reference.
