how to uninstall linux mate

Post by jclassic1 » Sun Jun 07, 2015 3:50 am

As a new linux user I have installed both Mint and Mate on my hard drive but find that although they are both very similar I prefer using Mint so would like to take off Mate from my hard drive.
Can someone please tell me how to go about doing this.

Mate is a version of Mint — specifically a version of the desktop environment. What other version have you got that you prefer? Go to the menu in that version and open System Info, which will tell you the version you are looking at.

Thank you for your reply, the version I prefer is Mint 17.1 Cinnamon.
The Mate version is good but it seems silly to run two versions that are so similar.
I know I can do a fresh install but that would mean having to set up everything again.I thought perhaps there was a way to remove the Mate part from the hard drive.

If it’s a one install with two desktop environments, and you select the DE at the login window authentication then there is no automatic tool to remove mate. I looked at Mate packages dependencies that are not required by Cinnamon. Note that I do not guarantee that the following method is harmless as it was not tested. But the following command should do the trick.

$ sudo apt purge gnome-wise-icon-theme caja caja-folder-color-switcher gir1.2-mate-menu libmatedesktop libmatekbd libmateweather mate-common mate-control-center mate-desktop mate-dialogs mate-icon-theme mate-menus mate-notification-daemon mate-panel mate-session-manager mate-settings-daemon-pulse mate-settings-daemon marco mint-artwork-mate mate-terminal mate-media-pulse mate-media python-mate-menu mintmenu mintdesktop atril engrampa eom mate-applets mate-calc mate-power-manager mate-screensaver mate-system-monitor mate-utils pluma mate-indicator-applet mate-netspeed mate-polkit mate-sensors-applet mate-system-tools mate-user-guide

Linux mint удаление mate

If you installed LMDE and you don’t like/need MATE, or you only want to use Cinnamon, then I suggest you read on.

To completely remove MATE DE off of your computer, log in to Cinnamon, open Terminal and paste this command below:

sudo apt-get purge notification-daemon+ atril caja caja-common engrampa engrampa-common eom eom-common ffmpegthumbnailer-caja libatril libcaja-extension libmate libmate-common libmatecanvas libmatecomponent libmatecomponentui libmatedesktop libmatekbd libmatemenu libmatepanelapplet libmatepolkit libmatesensorsappletplugin libmateui libmatevfs libmateweather libmateweather-common mate-applets mate-applets-common mate-backgrounds mate-calc mate-conf-editor mate-control-center mate-core mate-desktop mate-desktop-common mate-desktop-environment mate-indicator-applet mate-keyring mate-media mate-menus mate-mime-data mate-netspeed mate-notification-daemon mate-panel mate-panel-common mate-polkit mate-power-manager mate-power-manager-common mate-screensaver mate-sensors-applet mate-session-manager mate-settings-daemon mate-settings-daemon-common mate-settings-daemon-gstreamer mate-system-monitor mate-system-tools mate-terminal mate-text-editor mate-themes mate-utils mate-vfs mate-vfs-common mate-window-manager mozo python-mate python-mate-desktop python-mate-menu

P.S.: To ensure that your system is clean from leftover dependecies, I suggest installing «upgrade-system» package and running it (sudo upgrade-system). Do that only if you know what you’re doing because that program will also upgrade all installed packages on the latest version found in the repositories. Breakages may occur!

Comments

@vincentv: Thank you for the advice. I’ve corrected this tutorial and added a warning about upgrades.

Upgrade-system is primarily for upgrading, but it’s best tool IMO for deleting unneeded dependecies. This tutorial is targeted on the people who try to remove MATE immediately after the installation (which suggests that they did an upgrade).

Completely remove MATE desktop from Ubuntu MATE 16.04

I have Ubuntu MATE 16.04 on my laptop. I have installed Cinnamon 3.0 using embrosyn’s PPA However, now when I try to login to my laptop, every time I have to select the Cinnamon desktop manually, which is very frustrating. How can I completely remove MATE and make Cinnamon default desktop environment?

Llightdm (login manager) should remember the last choosen session — so as far as i know there should be no need to select Cinnamon over and over again. what login-manager are you using?

To completely remove MATE:

Uninstall mate-desktop

To remove just mate-desktop package itself from Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) execute on terminal:

sudo apt-get remove mate-desktop

Uninstall mate-desktop and it’s dependent packages

To remove the mate-desktop package and any other dependant package which are no longer needed from Ubuntu Xenial.

sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove mate-desktop

Purging mate-desktop

If you also want to delete configuration and/or data files of mate-desktop from Ubuntu Xenial then this will work:

sudo apt-get purge mate-desktop

To delete configuration and/or data files of mate-desktop and it’s dependencies from Ubuntu Xenial then execute:

sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove mate-desktop

Completely remove MATE

Post by shrikant » Thu Oct 17, 2013 3:33 pm

I use linux mint with cinnamon and xfce desktops. Recently installed MATE and liked it. However i was trying to add something the panel and that crashed MATE.

MATE is not starting at all now.

So I uninstalled MATE and reinstalled it ..but I am seeing a blank screen and a blank panel

Not sure if the configuration is messed up or what .

How do i make my computer forget that mate was ever installed ( what all do i need to uninstall) so that a fresh install of mate works

sudo rm -rf ~/.config/mate* && sudo rm ~/.config/caja

and enter your password when prompted.
That should remove the user config of MATE for that particular user.
Make sure to copy and paste the command above. sudo rm -rf can be dangerous.
