Completely delete and reinstall Cinnamon

I’m having some issues with my Linux Mint 17.3 with Cinnamon.
I updated Cinnamon and suddently my taskbar stopped working. Mouse clicks aren’t recognized.
So I moved to Mate where everything works.

But after trying to set Nemo as default filemanager I rainbows up the Mate Desktop.

A reinstall of the Cinnamon packages didn’t help me.
So I want to delete Cinnamon and Mate und install both of them again.
What do I have to delete if I want to remove all configs from Cinnamon and Mate.

Configs are stored in your own home directory (each user has their own configs). In hidden directories like .config, .local, and such. The easiest way to try out if an issue is related to the configs on your account is to create a new, fresh, account and log in to that. If the problem is also present there, it’s related to the updates you installed. If it isn’t reproducible on the new account, it’s indeed something in the configs.

Installing more than one desktop many times leads to instabilities and problems. Re-installing Mint with one desktop will give you a more stable system.

I had to install Mate because Cinnamon is unuseable.
I tried many workarounds and tips I found on the web but none of them worked for me.
This is why I’m asking how to reset the complete Desktop.
A friend of mine also installed the updates and didn’t have any problems.
I will try a second account.
And I definitly want to have only one Desktop but no reinstall of Linux Mint .

So nothing is working.
Cinnamon wont come back to life.
Completely rainbows up.
Mate is working
with a
sudo apt-get remove —purge cinnamon*
sudo apt-get autoremove

is cinnamon gone?!
I want to kill mate aswell.
Just thinking of using Mate instead of Cinnamon. what do you guys think?

How do I uninstall Cinnamon?

So I installed the cinnamon desktop environment on Ubuntu 12.10 but now I want to uninstall it. What would the command line(s) be to uninstall it?

I remember something like that

sudo apt-get purge cinnamon 

In my case, I uninstalled it by the command mentioned by Enes. But I was still getting notification for updating Cinnamon.

I solved it by using these two commands:

sudo apt-get purge cinnamon . sudo apt-get autoremove 

In order to remove cinnamon and all the related packages the PPA installed you need first to install PPA-purge: disables a PPA and reverts to official packages.

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable 

sudo apt-get purge cinnamon --autoremove 

First, check what is going to be removed

sudo dpkg -l | grep .cinnamon. 

If you are ok with it, run this command

sudo apt autoremove --purge cinnamon* 

Command explanation

# dpkg -l lists all installed packages # grep .cinnamon. filters, so that only packages with keyword cinnamon within their names, listed # purge removes mentioned package # autoremove tries to remove dependency packages

Установка Cinnamon в Ubuntu 20.04

Особенности Cinnamon

Основные возможности Cinnamon:

• Панель с главным меню, списком окон и системным треем похожая на аналогичную панель в Windows. И расположена она тоже внизу.
• Поддержка апплетов на панели и десклетов для рабочего стола. Десклеты очень похожи на гаджеты Windows, они позволяют отслеживать нагрузку на процессор, погоду и другие полезности.
• Cinnamon более гибкий в настройке чем Gnome, вы можете настраивать различные параметры работы окружения.
• В качестве файлового менеджера используется Nemo. Это ещё один форк Nautilus с улучшенной интеграцией в эту оболочку.

Установка Cinnamon в Ubuntu 20.04

Установка Cinnamon в Ubuntu выполняется очень просто потому что пакет есть в официальных репозиториях. Перед установкой оболочки обновите все пакеты в системе:

sudo apt install cinnamon-desktop-environment

После завершения установки перезагрузите компьютер или завершите текущий сеанс. В окне входа вы сможете выбрать сессию Cinnamon нажав на специальную шестеренку:

Настройка Cinnamon

Теперь установка Cinnamon в Ubuntu 20.04 завершена и мы можем немного его настроить. Стандартные темы Ubuntu могут иметь кое-какие проблемы с Cinnamon. Но наборы тем от Numix работают отлично, их можно установить из официальных репозиториев:
