Screen unlock problem

Post by Ercouper » Sat Mar 10, 2018 8:49 am

I’m running Mint 18.3 and I have developed a problem with not being able to unlock screen once locked. The normal lock screen is displayed on monitor with the clock but no login box. To get out of this mode I have to CTL, ALT, F1 & login and then enter «reboot» to recover. If «never lock» is selected in preferences it will show desktop after idle period, mouse will move cursor around but mouse clicks will be ignored. CTL, ALT, F1 again to reboot and start system again. It seemed like, but I could be wrong, that the problem started after changing video cards from an ATI to an NVIDIA. Maybe coincidental (?). Any help would be appreciated as I hate to have to trash install and start over. TIA

What is your version of Mint and what is the desktop environment ? Which kernel and which architecture? If you don’t know open a terminal and enter:

You need to give this information for every help request in every thread.
Do not forget this in the future.

Create a fresh new user account for testing and see, if the problem is reproducible there.

The fact, that you only see the clock at first is normal. Does it help if you press any key instead moving / clicking with the mouse?

Kernel 4.13.0-36-generic x86_64 (64 bit)
Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
Cinnamon 3.6.6

All keys are «dead» except for CTL, ALT in combination with F keys. I believe.

Power management and video are linked so it’s certainly possible. But I think you need to provide more info. Copy/paste these separately to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here:

ANd have you looked in Driver Manager for nvidia drivers? The one recommended there is usually the right one.

I have tried both the X.Org drivers and the NVIDIA drivers (recommended) with identical results.

Also I have found that I can recover by CTL+ALT+F1, log in and enter «sudo service lightdm restart» but this involves a lot of typing.

(xfce, KDE, cinnamon, mate) 4.

[SOLVED] I cant get out of LOCK SCREEN

Post by Darkhaund » Sat Dec 24, 2016 12:53 am

I have been loving «Sofar» linux mint. I am using an old Gateway laptop

CPU: Dual core Intel Core2 T5300 (-MCP-) cache: 2048 KB
flags: (lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 ssse3) bmips: 6918
clock speeds: min/max: 800/1733 MHz 1: 1733 MHz 2: 800 MHz

Anyay. I was using xubuntu for over 2 years with alot of success. However, I found that Linux mint is more appealing.
I have googled alot of info on this issue i have with no success.

When I hit CTL-ALT-L to lock my screen. When I want to come back and I type my password, nothing happens!! Not even If i try pressing the unlock button.
I have to reboot.

The CTL-ALT-F1 think to KILL X.. does not work. Unless I am doing it wrong.
I would appreciate any help on this matter

What is your version of Mint and what is the desktop environment? If you don’t know open a terminal and enter:

If you see the dialog to enter your password you should also see a button to switch the user. Click it, this will bring you to the login screen. Select your account and try to enter the password. Does this help?

Try this:
If you are stuck press ctrl-alt-F1. Now enter your user name and your password. Note, that you do not get the least visual feedback, when you enter the password; type it blindly and press the Enter-key. Now enter this command:

Press ctrl-d, then alt-left. You should be back in the login screen.

Do this test: Create a fresh new user account, log out of your main account, log into the test account. Test the behavior there.

BOTH of your suggestions work

Re: I cant get out of LOCK SCREEN

Fine that you feel, that your problem is solved, but in reality I did not provide a solution.
My first suggestion is a workaround for getting out of the situation.
My second suggestion was a step to investigate into the problem. If you say, that the problem does not appear in the test account, then there is a problem in your main account.

I’m having the same problem. I will try your test. But you say its not a solution. Is this a bug being worked?

Try the routine and it does get me back to a new login screen without rebooting the laptop. Thanks. But as you said, this is not a solution. I did create a dummy account and the same thing happen in that account. I’m unable to exit out a the lock screen.
