Installing Wireless USB Adapter

I have a Wireless USB Adapter that I wish to install on a Desktop that only has USB 2.0 Ports and although the Adapter is USB 3.0 Compliant, my understanding is that it is Backward compatible with USB 2.0

The make and model are as follows: EDUP EP-AC1617.

Now it comes with a disk with drivers for Windows – Mac – Linux v3.0.0.1 and I run Mint – Cinnamon – Sarah, so I don’t know if there is a compatibility issue there.

Plugging it in does absolutely nothing, not even the light comes on which it does on a Windows Laptop. I don’t want it installed on the Laptop because the built in Wi-Fi already works fine.

So the question is: What is the correct procedure for installing these things on Linux? There are heaps of files in the Linux CD folder but none of them say install, so I guess it is a Terminal Command?

Make sure the adapter is plugged in and then do this:

a. Please generate an overview of your system like this:

— make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;

— copy/paste this command into the terminal:

(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

— Copy/paste the output in your next message.

b. Do the same with the following three commands:

I think it would be best if you first checked if your USB WIFI dongle is compatible with Linux in the first place. I use a TP-LINK uSB 2.0 dongle, I just plugged it in also into a 2.0 port and I got it working. No need to install anything. Check what other people are recommending:

Wifi dongles that are totally incompatible with Linux, are very rare, thankfully. In most cases, a non-functioning wifi dongle can be made to function in Linux after all.

also — — insert it into the usb port Before starting the machine up:
— most Linux System will detect new hardware on Boot-up,
more so than with Plug & Play, like on an Windows System.

— — then run those given commands in Terminal, & copy those results — back here.

Thanks Guys, I haven’t completed all the tasks you have set me but I am on the case.

In the meantime I can report:

1: I plugged an old EDUP USB 2.0 802.11n dongle in and it just worked.

2: I thought maybe I had a dud new one, so I dug out a very old XP Computer and Windows recognised the new dongle, asked me to install the drivers which I did and away it went. Unbelievably, on speedtest the fastest in the house, and that includes Win10 Laptops.

So, I guess we can safely say the Dongle isn’t faulty and it is backward compatible with USB 2.0.

OK, I’ll be back later with the results of the other tests.

But just be aware that some of the reports may refer to an internal PCI Modem which I wish to replace because of its slowness.
