Всем привет, у меня linux mint (основная ОС), совсем недавно на него перешел. у меня вопрос на.

Если не нужны «комнаты», лучше наверное Mint, на словечко красивое «плазма» не ведись (придумают-же ?), с панелью управления в КДЕ как по мне, то сложней настраивать её.

Я не про команды, я про комнаты. Хоть я не пользовался этой фишкой, но вроде-как процесс работает независимо в комнате и не повесит всю систему. Знающие пользователи поправят меня. Дистрибутивы отличаются верхушками, в основном везде одинаковое ядро, а выбор DE на любителя. Чем свежей ядро (во всех буквально дистрибутивах) тем больше жор ресурсов.

Любой. Выберите, какой DE вам больше нравится — KDE или Cinnamon. Если первый — ставьте первый вариант, если второй — соответственно, второй. Иных содержательных критериев при выборе между этой парой практически нет.

Лучше поставить Арч Обновляется оперативнее, грузится быстрее. Хотя, казалось бы, там и там кеды. Но, факт!

Не соглашусь. Ничего там особо гикового нет. Установка без гуя, ну и ладно. Следуем рецепту и всё ставится не сложнее, чем у Минта или Ку.

если честно, то в личном пользовании/эксплуатации не было, я больше потроллить 🙁 Так, иногда из-за плеча смотрел, иногда давали за мышку подержаться. Но все кто работали отзывались об ОС с уважением.
Дома Федора устраивает на все 146%, а удовлетворить любопытство за свой счёт не готов. Только если фирма даст рабочий бук.

_sg2, я долгое время игрался хакинтошами и хранил виртуалку с макосью. Потом понял, что это сродни фетишизму. Сами надкусанные устройства мне не нравятся, но вот макось дизайном, продуманностью и отсутствием. пусть будет артефактов древней цивилизации, мне нравится. Собственно, как и в любом лине: хочешь прыгнуть в сторону — открывай консоль и тыкай в кнопочки. Но красиво, плавненько, кругленько и т.п.

kubuntu or mint for my next upgrade?

I have been using ubuntu unity for several years but want to switch. I have tried kubuntu and mint and they both seem better that ubuntu. I don’t see any great advantage of one over the other. If you prefer one of these more than the other, please tell me why.

actually the question makes a lot of sense. unfortunately it is one of those questions that is not really answerable. why i prefer mint is basically my preferences, my attitudes and beliefs. I see no reason to have to buy new hardware every couple of years . I have one desktop that has a P4 it does everything i require of it. I prefer mint mate. it has things i like. i detest unity. in fact it is the reason i changed to mint.

however there are hundreds that would have a different answer

Well, count me as one of several million users who are just fine with Unity . . .

Anyway, regarding Tom Carr’s question — — zemartin’s comment is right-on. You want to compare Apples to Apples . . . I still like KDE also, but don’t care for the «clunkiness» of the older desktop metaphors (nested categories, excess mouse-clicks, etc.)

It depends on what you’re asking. If you are comparing Mint’s KDE spin to Kubuntu, the main difference is that Mint is still on KDE 4 and Kubuntu is on KDE 5. Personally, I like KDE 5 a lot better, but being newer it also has more bugs.

If your question is about KDE 5 (on Kubuntu) vs. Cinnamon (on Linux Mint), that’s a little less straightforward. Both are very nice desktop environments. I suggest you keep playing with them both and decide for yourself.

I have a POS HP laptop (a few years old) with an AMD A4 processor. It couldn’t run the Windows that came installed on it at all. I have tried several flavors of Linux over the past se veral weeks. Unity was too much of a recourse hog, as well, to work properly. Linux Mint 17.3 Xfce was too unstable: features worked sometimes, didn’t work others, xscreensaver was, visually, a joke. Lubuntu just didn’t run well; Xubuntu’s lockscreen flat-out didn’t work, and, when I tried to troubleshoot it, my wifi quit. Plus the software center was nowhere near as nice as Unity’s.

Then I tried Ubuntu Mate—beautiful DE, screensaver and lockscreen work the way they should, it doesn’t tax my processor, it appears to be stable, and it has some beautiful themes. My POS is finally a useful member of the family!

Like Ubuntu, Mint has several flavors. If you like Kubuntu (and therefore KDE) I would advise to try Linux Mint 17.3 KDE.

See what works best for you. Read reviews from articles and videos of both distros that you can find on Google.

I personally lean towards Mint but I also like Ubuntu and it’s community. Either way you can’t go wrong.

Mint support starts whenever mint decides; could be a month or two behind.
Kubuntu follows Ubuntu’s cadence, so support will last as long as Ubuntu.

And they both end support at the same time.

I’ll throw this in: while we have a forum for Mint here, it is not a great option if you are looking for support, the Mint forums are a better one, and any thread posted here regarding Mint, regardless of the nature of the support request, will get moved to the ‘Mint’ forum here.

On the other hand, Kubuntu is supported in all the main support forums here as it is an official member of the Ubuntu flavours family.

Just thought I’d mention it, but at the end of the day, whatever suits your workflow is what you should use. It might not be either of the ones you’ve named. A valid question which only you can answer. Try them out and see which fits best.
