Remove White Border Around Windows (solved)

Post by icurate » Fri May 06, 2022 4:54 pm

I am setting up a computer with 20.3 Elsie and am looking for a way to remove the thin white border around the windows. I can’t find anything in the settings and my online search results are from 10 years ago. My other computer with 19 doesn’t have this. I use these computers for presentations/displays and the border is distracting if the windows overlap. Any help will be appreciated.

See if you can right-click on the window and set the border to be

a) 1 pixel thick (or thin)
b) borderless
c) normal

If you’re successful with either a or b, Congratulations! You’ve picked a working window manager (I think that’s the term, but why fuss over little details)

It’s what you do AFTER that ought to impress. If that right-click even allows you to set the border for THAT application (your slideshow) all throughout, then you’re right on the money.

If you’re a console cowboy, you might be bold enough to install wmctrl, but it can be tricky like conky, because it leads to a rabbit hole.

These are just suggestions. Remember that line from Morpheus, something like I’m just showing you the door.

Actually, there is Linux Mint 20.3, nickname una.
And there is Linux Mint Debian Edition 5, short form LMDE 5, nickname elsie.
Yet, there is no 20.3 elsie anywhere.
So, please, share the complete output of the terminal command

with us so that we can be sure about which Linux Mint edition we are talking and which desktop environment is in use.
Thanks.

That border comes from your choice of themes, specifically the Controls theme and the Windows border theme and how they interact. I can’t quite work out what theme you’ve set from the screenshots. If you want rid — changing theme is the answer.

I appreciate your help, but that just gives me a black border instead of white. The biggest question for me is how I ended up with Debian instead of Cinnamon. I am pretty sure that I just need to install Cinnamon and that will fix my issue.

You’ve got Cinnamon, running on Mint just on a Debian (rather than a Ubuntu) base. You will have ended up with that by using an LMDE5 ISO to install.

Changing your Window Borders theme (the hint is in the name) — Menu > Preferences > Themes — will fix your problem.

Hint — both the current Mint-X and Mint-Y Window border themes have a detectable border but you can Add/Remove to use other themes from the Cinnamon Spices selection, or there are various alternative themes available to install in the repos — search in synaptic / software manager for ‘theme’

I really appreciate the explanations, I learned a lot. I read about the differences between the Debian and Ubuntu versions of Mint and ended up installing the Ubuntu version, just so my two installs are the same.

How can I change window border appearance?

Post by dexl » Wed Jul 22, 2020 11:12 am

I love the dark theme, it’s easier on the eyes. However, it’s so dark, I can’t see the edges of windows, can’t tell where one tab starts and another ends, etc. Is there a way to make it look more distinct, like what I did here in Gimp:

I don’t know how it’s done. At the same time I know it’s possible to change application window colours since it managed with css. But be careful enough because of risk to mess up your gtk themes.

I had the same problem with the dark preinstalled themes. I quite like this Alu-Night-XFCE (Straight), especially the Window Manager component, for having the mouse slightly lighten or darken controls it passes over them. Maybe worth a try for your purposes.

(I was new to adding XFCE themes, so had to create a «themes» folder in the file manager — /home/USERNAME/.local/share/themes = then drag the extracted theme folder into it. the new theme then showed up in the Appearance and Window Manager dialogs.)

TRUST BUT VERIFY any advice from anybody, including me. Mint/Ubuntu user since 10.04 LTS. LM20 64 bit XFCE (Dell 1520). Dual boot LM20 XFCE / Win7 (Lenovo desktop and Acer netbook). Testing LM21.1 Cinnamon and XFCE Live for new Lenovo desktop.

Thank you all for your replies. I was actually thinking of editing the Mint-Y-Dark theme in question by coping the folder with the theme and running it through GIMP, editing some elements to make it look more to what I want it to look like. I will give it a try and report here on my attempt(s).

Funny, I was just about to change my above post to say that I stumbled across and have begun using the Greybird themes. In the LM20 repository so no special installation. The basic Themes are silver grey and dark, with very readable window controls as compared with other dark themes. Several Window Manager edge resizings. (I’ve adopted Bluebird for a pretty blue netbook.) It has apparently been a standard Xubuntu theme for some time, see no issues on first uses. Good luck.
