There is no other OS that can be installed on a BB10 device. The bootloader on a BB10 device is locked down to prevent that.

ok. let’s «see» this from a different prospective. What about to use the shell of the passport as is but lets change the keyboard, the screen, every hardware component we see from the outside will be replaced with the component of the same size but Linux compatibles and at the same time we remove some hardware component that are inside the shell and change them with hardware components that are compatible with Linux as well. I’m thinking to use the soc of the pinephone for example. I suspect that the form factor is different,so it will not fit. So,maybe a soc that has almost the same size of the soc used by blackberry ? For sure we should also change the keyboard because the keyboard uses a driver that is closed source and it shold be rewritten to work on Linux. So,let’s also change the keyboard with a keyboard of the same size Linux compatible. And what about the screen ? the screen of the blackberry is very specific. I presume it’s hard to find another screen of those sizes that’s compatible with a driver written for Linux. I think that’s a project hard to achieve, but not impossible. For sure it’s more doable if there is a group of hardware and software engineers with the will to do that. Ehy,the blackberry is dead and no one of us wants that. The project has its own sense. We want that our dead phone will still alive. With Linux at its heart its not a bad idea. Or with FreeBSD. No Android for me. I hate it.

Maybe the options for the components of something like OurPhone, will evolve a bit more until it could fit into the shell of a Passport.

You mean something like this?

There was a whole long thread on these forums about it. Surprised you missed it.

Spoiler alert. it never worked.

Linux chroot on passport

I was wondering if you can run a Linux chroot on the passport via the android app runtime (maybe use an app like GNUroot or something similar)
I basically want to buy a passport to use it with a linux chroot with its amazing keyboard (because that’s the next best thing after termux- a Linux terminal emulator for android but that one requires 5.0< to work)

Too broke for that honestly (a passport can go for as low as 200$, the keyOne is gonna be 600+ shipping here in Egypt)

Update: seems like i misunderstood what the android run time actually was.
I thought it was more or less full android (which obviously turned out to be wrong)
Without an android base you cant have a linux chroot, so my dreams are now crushed.
Ill probably still buy a passport a year or two if i ever stumble upon one very cheaply and just ssh into whatever to use linux with an actual keyboard.

Your wish to have a chroot environment on the passport appears misguided. Android devices run the android runtime environment (in which the apps run) on top of Linux which makes that chroot possible.

On BB10, the android runtime environment is based on the dalvik VM which was ported over to BB10. You don’t have a Linux environment underneath in which you coud root; again it’s rather bb10!! It’s a totally different system which ressemblance stops at its POSIX compliancy, inherited from its QNX legacy. (google bb10 history. Well documented history)

It is possible to have a terminal session on the bb10 (look on the blackberry store) and/or ssh sessions to Linux servers. But what I get from your post is that you’d like a Linux *sandbox* on top of bb10. Nope. Won’t happen.

It’s a nice system for ssh, that said

However. if someone (group or individuals) felt like compiling a terminal(non-gui) linux emulator as a bb10 app (in its own sandbox). that would be interesting. but maybe too big a project?. Is that possible? What would the snags be? How many manhours do you figure that would take (honestly) ? 🙂

Will BlackBerry Blend work with Linux?

I have to replace my laptop and thinking of going with Linux. Will BlackBerry Blend work with Linux?

You can run Windows 7 in a virtual machine. But at that point it seems more trouble than it’s worth.

What does getting a new pc have to do with linux?
And are we talking pc or laptop?
Either way I would pay $10 on ebay for a W10 oem license as support for it is ultimately better and as someone says dual boot to linux if you really want. I just dual boot using cloudready and use chromeos instead for basic pc needs and go back to W10 for more( this has become rare these days). Cloudready is fast and easy.
Also you can probably do this already with whatever old hw you have and see significant speed. Cloudready is kinda meant to be used on older hw.

This — I have been using Ubuntu Linux and Windows in a dual-boot configuration for over 10 years. It means I can use Linux for 99.9% of my computing requirements and have Windows available for when I need BB Link, or to do certain other mobile-phone-related tasks. Doing it this way has meant I haven’t needed to upgrade from Windows XP (!) as Ubuntu keeps itself nicely updated and is lower maintenance than Windows.

Be aware that certain programs (iTunes for example) are not yet available for Linux, but in most cases a workaround is available.

Setting up your dual-boot PC couldn’t be easier, just install Windows as usual, having partitioned the drive as required to allow space for Linux afterwards. Then pop in a USB with Ubuntu on, and it takes you through everything, including the dual-boot setup.
