Pages 4+
Ive been using Pages for years now, and its always been my number one. it works for both computer and iPad, which makes it very convinient. Until recently, when I was typing up a doc for a project when it just stopped. I couldnt exit the app, nor make any changes whatsoever. I figured out that by bringing up the bar and switching to a diffrent app (such as Safari in my case) would close Pages. I attempted updating the app, which fixed it for about a day. when I went to use it next, it quit working once again, same as before. Im not suree wheather or not its something to do with my computer, or Pages itself.
I do recomend Pages to anyone, but I would love some help regarding this issue. I even searched up what to do and forced quit the app, which did nothing at all.
Pages via iPad
I’m no computer whizz by any stretch, so perhaps it’s “my bad” and in this I stand to be educated. However, in the early days when I first adopted “Pages” and used it to manage table reports whilst on the move via my iPad, I was really pleased with its performance. Structuring the tables via the iPad was more that awkward and messy, but I worked my way around that by structuring the required tables via my iMac, and using my iPad to fill in the required text whilst out and about with my work. But then an update. And typing text to the tables via iPad is a LONG, SLOW, CHORE. I type and then have to wait, for half or even for a full minute, before the text catches up with me. ‘click click click’ is what I hear, as grindingly slowly, the text, one letter, one key stroke, painstakingly (unbearably!) interspersed with at least one full second’s pause between each, finally sees the sentence I’ve written. Then I can proceed with the next row of text. At each update, I hoped this would be rectified but it doesn’t happen. So, Pages …… is it me? If it is, I’d appreciate it if you would tell me what it was I DIDN’T do for this grindingly slow advent to typing to table to have occurred. Otherwise, I think the app is excellent and I’m certain I do not use it to its fullest potential.
Getting slowly better
The new updates are gradually getting better but overall the old Pages app is still better and I still use it in preference to Pages 6. Linked text… finally!! A little more complicated then it needs to be (the older version Pages 4 is better). When I saved my Pages 6 document to a pdf it did not show the correct text in the linked boxes. In Pages it looked fine… saved as a pdf it was wrong. My solution? Do the whole document again in the old version. Disappointing I must say. I would also like to be able to use the arrows to nudge text boxes into position. Pages 6… cannot do it. Pages 4… easily done.
My previous review:I cannot believe Apple destroyed a great software Pages09! No longer can you just right click a thumbnail and copy, delete or capture; text boxes do not link; formating box is huge and no longer floats; tables are difficult to move and format and… it ruined my previously saved Pages 09 documents — removed graphics in text/graphic boxes. DO NOT upgrade! I have already deleted Pages 5 and restored my Pages 09 from iWorks.
I used to ‘brag’ to my PC friends who had to use Microsoft Word… as Pages was so much easier to use… but not now… shame.

Opening Macintosh Pages files in Ubuntu
I am switching from Macintosh. I want to know if there is an easy way to bulk convert files created by the word processor Pages into something Ubuntu can run. Open Office for example. Any advice appreciated.

There don’t appear to be a lot of Pages to OpenDocument Text converters, but luckily there are lots of Pages to Word Document converters, and LibreOffice can read Word documents. I suggest using this website here: https://cloudconvert.com/pages-to-docx.
It allows you to upload multiple documents securely and convert them to a Word document which LibreOffice can read. Later, you can convert them to OpenDocument Text inside of LibreOffice if you wish.
Be warned that if your documents have lots of complex formatting then this may get lost when converting between files.
It would be easier to convert the documents in Pages, if possible, to a more widely readable formats:
- OpenDocument Format (.odt) so they can be opened in Libre/OpenOffice — may not be supported
- XML Office etc (.doc/.docx) — this can be imported into Libreoffice and in MS office . If can’t do ODF probably the next best thing.
- PDF — should mean that all the formatting etc is presevered, but it is
If you don’t currently have access to pages, there are various file converters available (e.g. ZamZar) that may work. The problem here is that it is likely to be a proprietary file format, so it probably is not open-able in other programs. If it is, it may have issues with formatting, missing/misplaces bits etc
If you have no luck converting the files, you may be able to recover some of the document by making a copy, changing the extension to .zip , and extracting it. You should be able to get the text out of the xml files inside — you may also find a PDF file: [1] [2]
N.B. Ubuntu and other Linux systems often now come with Libreoffice instead of OpenOffice — it is basically the same, for the pro and cons see here.
Pages 4+
I am a 3rd year software engineering student who had bought his first macbook less than a year ago and was excited to try all the new software that came along. I decided to try pages and see if it would beat google docs as it was the primary document creation software I used. However I can definitely say that I enjoy pages the most out of word and google docs. There have been many classes where I have to write in APA7 style and pages makes it really easy to indent the sources I find, as other software would, in my opinion, make it frustrating to line everything up correctly. With pages I simply press tab 2-3 times and then that specfic line will get a new indent whilst leaving the liens above and below it alone. It does take some getting used too as the UI/UX is different from the other software I’ve mentioned. However, pages has been the easiest to use in the long run and as all my other devices are apple products, it is extremelly easy to access my documents and share them around. I will say, however, google docs is still superior when it comes to working with other people, as anyone can use google docs for free. WIth pages you have to have an apple product. Pages will continue to be my go to for document writing as for me it has been the easiest to work with, simple, conice, easy to maintain, easy acces and great editing with my other devices.
SUPERIOR Word Processor, but.
It isn’t common that Apple creates a product that is inferior to their competition. But they have sort of become a victim of their own version of how Microsoft spent the whole of the 1990s in and out of court battles because they put too many locks, blocks, and restrictions on their software for others to partake in perhaps either writing enhancements to Microsoft’s outstanding software or, for that matter, write software to work with Microsoft’s at all. Apple has achieved incredible success since Gilbert Amelio brought Steve Jobs back («temporarily») in about 1996 and subsequently with Tim Cook — and the Superhuman and underappreciated Jony Ive, who perhaps should have replaced Steve Jobs since the two were of nearly identical mind. But Apple’s mistake is that STILL today, some 30 years after the issue was partly responsible for bringing Apple to its knees, they are no more interchangable and seamlessly cooperative with MS Office programs with their own iWork applications. How do I know? I have suffered professionally over and over and over because of it. Apple, PLEASE PLEASE fix this! You’re SOOO sophisticated; please make your software compatible in BOTH DIRECTIONS with similar apps from Microsoft and Google!
basic but ok
its main flaw seems to be randomly moving around text and drawings and images in an unpleasant manner as you are editing, requiring tons of rework every time you edit documents. the defults should be less painful. e.g. anchor stuff down by default. what are the proper settings to not have the app move stuff around randomly as you are editing your document? I have no idea. also it needs a «new page» button to start a new page Now, and have the next text you input be anchored at the top of that page, forever. e.g. when u are starting a new section or chapter. you never want edits from the prior chapter to move down the heading and text of the next chapter, but it does. unfortunately, it seems like most if not all page type editors like this have similar flaws about randomly moving our items around in the document as their default setting. why is this? don’t the application developers ever try to use this to type a document with images or diagrams in it and see these problems? i add arrows to images and somehow after i edit the document, where are the arrows? they are «somewhere» in the document floating somewhere. why? i have to keep deleting them and re-making them, if i can find them at all. finally . just give up and forget about the arrows. it is embarassing that document creation is still so broken. it was probably better with earlier word / image processors that didnt try to be so «smart»
