This question was caused by a typo or a problem that can no longer be reproduced. While similar questions may be on-topic here, this one was resolved in a way less likely to help future readers.

I am trying to install a toolkit, I’m on WSL using ubuntu — I downloaded ubuntu yesterday. Here is what the installation process looks like for this toolkit. On windows cmd it says I have python 3.7.9 but on ubuntu its saying I have python 3.8.2

pip Command Not Found – Mac and Linux Error Solved

When using Python, you might need to install and use certain packages. And there is a command available for that known as ‘pip’.

With pip, you can install, upgrade, and uninstall various Python packages. You’ll learn how to use it, and how to handle pip errors, in this article.

How to use pip

Pip is a command that you can use on the Linux or Mac command line. You can select a package from here.

Below is an example of how you would install the mock-open package with pip .

As this package was already installed, we are getting the message that the requirement is already met.

Note that I have used pip3 because I am using Python3. We’ll discuss this in detail later.

What is the error pip: command not found ?

Sometimes when you are installing packages, you might face the error: pip: command not found . This error could be due to the following reasons:

1. Pip is not installed.
2. Pip is installed, but it is not compatible with the current environment.

On Linux, you must install the pip package manager separately as it is an independent package. But on Mac, you do not need to install pip manually, as long as you are working with Python 3.x.

Troubleshooting the error pip: command not found

On Mac and Linux, you can use the below command to check if pip is installed.

If pip is not installed, you can follow the install steps here for your respective OS.

2. Upgrade pip to the latest version

If pip is still not working, try to upgrade pip to the latest version:

python -m pip install --upgrade pip

3. Fix environment issues

It is possible that you are trying to use the wrong version of pip. For example, pip3 works for Python3 , whereas pip works only for Python2 .

You can check your Python version on Linux and Mac like this:

If your code is in Python 2 and you still wish to use an older version of pip, you can follow the below steps.

Note that Python 2 has reached end of life. It is better to upgrade your code base to Python 3 and use the latest version of pip.

Follow the below steps only if you are using Python2:

This command installs the pip command onto your system.

Now try to use the pip command – it should work without errors.

Pip is a python library, package manager that allows you to download and install packages from the (Python Package Index) PyPi repository. When you try to download a package using the pip without having a pip package manager, an error will raise on the terminal window ‘pip: command not found.

In this guide, We will show you the main causes of this error and how to fix the pip command not found error on the Ubuntu 20.04 system using a potential solution.

What is “pip command not found” error ?

The python-pip package manager works as an independent package manager on Linux distribution. This means you need to install the pip tool separately from python programs.

The pip command is not found an error raised on your Linux terminal window if the pip is not installed independently on Ubuntu 20.04 system. Therefore, before installing any package using pip, the pip tool should be installed on your Ubuntu system.

When are working with the python3 version, you can use the pip or pip3 as well while installing a new python package on your system.
For example, you want to install a python package ‘scrapy’ using the pip command:

How to fix pip command not found error on Ubuntu 20.04?

There can be two versions of pip (at the time of writing article python4 was not released so once python4 is available, it is possible we have another version of pip) i.e. from python2 and python3.

So based on your requirement and environment you can choose to install the respective pip version (although python2 is mostly deprecated and you can choose to install pip from Python3).

Scenario-1: Install pip package manager for Python3

When pip command not found error is raised on your terminal window, you can easily fix the error by running the below-mentioned command:

$ sudo apt install python3-pip

The above command will install the pip package manager on your Ubuntu 20.04 system as follows:

Display the pip installed version by using the following command:

$ pip --version or $ pip3 --version

Now, you can go ahead an install a package using pip package manager by running the following command:

As you will notice, the above command will not show any error. It directly installs the scrapy python module on your system Ubuntu 20.04.

Scenario-2: Install pip package manager for Python2

Python 2 version has obsoleted now. This means Python 2 is no longer to use or maintained properly. Now, everyone moving towards the python 3 versions. So, try to move your python code over to the codebase that supports the newest Python 3 framework. But, if you still need to install the pip2 package manager tool then, download the get-pip.py script using the curl command as follows:

$ curl https://bootstrap.pypa.io/pip/2.7/get-pip.py --output get-pip.py

Now, you can install pip for the python2 version using the following command:

Print the pip2 installed version using the below-mentioned command:

How to use the pip command?

Using the pip command, you easily install packages from the python packages index repository, local projects, version control, and distribution files.
To get installation help related to python3 packages, use the following pip3 command:

List all pip3 packages or modules

To list all pip3 packages, use the following command:

Install and uninstall a package using pip

Now, you can install a package from the pip3 packages list.

Similarly, you can also uninstall it via pip3 or pip command. To uninstall a package using pip3, run the below-given command:

$ pip3 uninstall package-name

Upgrade a package using pip

You can also upgrade a specific package to its latest version using pip as follows:

$ pip install --upgrade package-name

How to Fix “Command ‘pip3’ not found” Error in Linux

PIP is the conventional package manager for Python, which is the standard tool for installing and managing Python packages alongside their dependencies which are not included in the standard Python library.

When using pip, you might encounter the error “pip command not found” on the terminal. Below is an excerpt of the error as captured on the Ubuntu system.

$ pip3 install pandas Command 'pip3' not found, but can be installed with: sudo apt install python3-pip

From the output, you can infer that there’s a high chance that PIP is not installed.

In this article, we look at ways how you can install PIP in Linux to fix the “pip command not found” error.

Install PIP in Linux

The first course of action is to ensure that Python is installed on the system, which you can confirm by running:

$ python3 --version Python 3.9.2 

From the output, we already have Python 3.9 installed.

To install PIP on Debian-based distributions, run the following command:

$ sudo apt install python3-pip -y

The command installs PIP alongside a bunch of other additional packages and dependencies.

For RHEL-based distributions such as Fedora, Rocky, AlmaLinux, and CentOS run the following yum command.

$ sudo yum install python3-pip -y

For Arch Linux distributions, execute the command:

$ sudo pacman -S python-pip -y

Once installed, verify the version of the pip installed as shown.

$ pip3 --version pip 20.3.4 from /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/pip (python 3.9) 

Additionally, you can verify the location of pip binaries as shown

$ which pip3 /usr/bin/pip3 

From the output, we have installed PIP 20.3.4.

Upgrade PIP in Linux

The other way to fix the “pip command not found” error is to upgrade PIP to the latest version.

$ sudo -H pip3 install --upgrade pip

From the output, we have upgraded the pip from version 20.3.4 to 23.1.2.

PIP – Install Python Packages

Now you should be able to install and manage Python packages and libraries using Pip without an issue.
