How to Enable Java plugin support on Firefox on Linux

Many web pages use Java applets for interactive content such as online games, WebEx (Online meeting), etc. By default all the browsers disabled the plugin due to security issue and still you want to enable to access the trusted web sites. We can enable it on browser by following below procedures. Make sure you system should have installed Oracle JAVA before proceeding to enable the JAVA Applet.

Method 1 : Enable Java plugin Support on Firefox through Oracle Java

1) Install Oracle Java

Make sure you system should have installed Oracle JAVA before proceeding to enable the JAVA Applet.

Navigate to Menu >> Add-ons >> Plugins >> Oracle JAVA, Search Java(TM) Platform, If Java is disabled, click on Never Activate to open its drop-down menu and select the option to activate Java. The recommended (default) option is Ask to Activate, which lets you run Java when prompted.

4) Create symbolic link to enable Java in Firefox

If you didn’t find Java(TM) Platform plugin, use the below method to enable it. Restart the Firefox browser and verify.

When I try with the sudo update-alternatives —config java command it shows only one choice available. Plugins are not usable in Firefox.

If you are using a version after 52 (not ESR), which disabled NPAPI, you are out of luck. If you are using one prior, which you absolutely wouldn’t want to, you can install the OpenJDK JRE, which would allow you to execute Java binaries locally using the java binary. This however, isn’t enough to execute Java web applets on your browser, which can be accomplished by installing the Icedtea plugin: Then go to about:addons , in the plugin section, check if the plugin is enabled. Mozilla disables insecure plugins by default, that means that Java is disable even after installation due security concerns. You need to activate it before using it.

Installing the IcedTea Java plugin:

• verify the plugin is active (check about:plugins)

One of my colleagues created a script to remove the old firefox, and untar it on every run. That way it never gets updated accidentally. Be sure not to do this with your main firefox application.

Java plugin no longer supported in firefox 52. Is there any other way to run java applets in firefox

Recently I installed Oracle Java. It worked fine, But with the recent upgrade with Firefox throws an error. I checked it here, which says:

Starting with Firefox Version 52 (released in March 2017), Firefox has limited support for plug-ins, and therefore will not run Java. Use the Java Control Panel to find the installed Java version.

$ java -version java version "1.8.0_121" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_121-b13)

The following steps should work (tested on Mint 18 based on Ubuntu 16.04LTS):

1. Download and extract the Firefox ESR install from here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/
2. Launch Firefox and type about:config in the location bar
3. Accept the risks and then add a key (right click mouse >New > Boolean)
4. Call the key plugin.load_flash_only and set it to false
5. Add a Firefox extension for switching the user agent eg. User-Agent Switcher
6. Set the user agent to an earlier version of Firefox on Linux eg. Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i586; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0
7. Close Firefox
8. Download the tar.gz JRE package for Linux on www.java.com and store the file in the folder Downloads in your home folder (ie. ~/Downloads ). It will be of the form: jre-8u161-linux-i586.tar.gz for the 32 bit version. Choose the 32 bit or 64 bit version according to the version of Firefox ESR you downloaded.
9. Then do the following to extract the JRE in a shell (replacing with 64 bit versions if needed):

sudo mkdir -p -v /opt/java/32 cd ~/Downloads tar -zxvf jre-8u161-linux-i586.tar.gz sudo mv -v jre1.8.0_* /opt/java/32

3) Enable Java applet on Firefox

Restart the Firefox browser and verify.
