[solved] filter failed

Post by chango » Thu May 09, 2019 9:05 am

I am running Mint 18.3 using a HP 1200 printer.
When I try to print today I receive a error message: «filter failed». I tested the printer on another PC and it worked OK. I did get a message on that other PC saying «Missing print filter for HP Laserjet 1200» yet it printed OK.
So there apparently is a bad filter or a missing filter for the print process.
I have no idea where to go from here.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I have the same annoying problem with my Brother printer, I cannot print after upgrading

I first tried to reinstall cups and ghostscript also tried to read here
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CU . _failed%22

I do not understand what is wrong?

But cannot understand what is wrong, from my /var/log/cups/error_log

I have the exact same problem on my Brother HL-5140.
I’m almost certain the recent ghostscript security patch is the problem as it occurred immediately after the package upgrade:
— https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gh . u0.18.04.9
the previous version was 9.26~dfsg+0-0ubuntu0.18.04.8 and worked fine.
I can’t downgrade via apt-get but a downgrade may be possible via the old files at:
— https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-security/ . d/16512823
Note: I don’t plan to do this as my HP Officejet still works fine, so untested!

It seems to me the patch has picked up an older bug reported in ghostscript 9.26 in April 2019:
— https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo . bug=926787
— https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo . bug=926789
which claims to be already fixed in cups-filters. But how did it get «unfixed», regression .

This is not the first time I’ve had ghostscript problems. last time it was the «blue background» issue. A fix came out pretty quickly.
I’ll be waiting for the patch to arrive, hopefully sooner than later if the screams are loud enough.

Can’t print any more «Stopped — Filter failed»

I have a HP DeskJet 940c. It had always worked. A few days ago it has suddenly stopped working. Even after reboot, its status («Printer State») always shows «Stopped — Filter failed» and every time I try to print the job remains «pending» forever. I have rebooted several times. Is there any known fix/workaround?

I assume that the printer worked before. Check your /var/spool/cups directory, and empty it.

If that does not help, see the instructions for install the necessary plugins for your HP printer here.

Yes it worked before as I said. After emptying /var/spool/cups, and reconnecting the printer, the issue persists. These errors appeared in /var/log/cups/error_log when I connected the printer: W [18/Nov/2013:19:35:59 +0100] AddProfile failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod:No such interface org.freedesktop.ColorManager’ on object at path /org/freedesktop/ColorManager/devices/cups_hp W [18/Nov/2013:19:35:59 +0100] AddProfile failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod:No such interface org.freedesktop.ColorManager’ on object at path /org/freedesktop/ColorManager/devices/cups_hp

Why should I suddenly need to install a plugin for a printer that was working? Just asking. Did I have the plugin and it got uninstalled or corrupted somehow? Is it some broken update that makes the printer need a plugin that it didn’t use to need but doesn’t either automatically install it nor issue a warning?

Ok, hp-setup fixed the issue. It created a new printer, I deleted the old one, and the new one works. Ridiculous.
