When attempting to run Terraforming Mars using Proton (4.2-9) I get this error (Proton 4.11-6 had same error):
Failed to initialize graphics.
Make sure you have DirectX 11 installed, have up to date
drivers for your graphics card and have not disabled
3D acceleration in display settings.
InitializeEngineGraphics failed
I’m trying to determine if this is requires a new graphics card or if I just don’t have the right driver/software installed. The card doesn’t support vulkan but that isn’t actually a requirement, is it?
OS: Mint 19.2 (kernel: 4.15.0-54)
GPU: GeForce GT 520 (yes it’s old)
Driver: nvidia 390.129 (nvidia-driver-390 package)
(There’s beta support for a 396 driver — would that help, assuming I can get it to work?)

I have seen this error from Unity games on old rig I use for old games, because it has ancient video card with DirectX 10. that error appeared because video card failed to meet DX11 support requirement, however same game worked well on that card from windows.
GT 520 should have native DX11 support, right? maybe proton tries to run it with DX12? try to add launch params to game to force DX9, DX11, no Vulkan and such. Maybe something can work.
Ideally Proton should check your card and load games in DX mode instead of Vulkan. also if it is Unity game check latest Unity engine requirements, they might need newer card make

This got it to work. Runs a bit slowly and a few graphics issues (background has blinking squares) but that’s understandable with WINE + old card, and it’s quite playable.

Yes, WineD3D might work for most games that run DirectX 10 and 11, but not as many as DXVK, nor as quickly.
DXVK is a lot faster, but unfortunately it requires Vulkan support.
I’m not sure the exact specs of the older nVidia Cards. The older AMD cards had a limiting factor that the earlier ones were physically incapable of running Vulkan. I do not know if those limitations exist in older nVidia cards as well, or if it’s just Vendor lock. (nVidia is famous for it’s vendor lock.)

I am quite happy with steam play. I am using proton 3.7-4 Beta.
I would like to try the performance of GTA V and Witcher 3 on my Linux Mint 19 system.
My system is configured as the following:
OpenGL version string: 4.4 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 18.3.0-devel — padoka PPA
Kernel driver in use: radeon
Kernel modules: radeon, amdgpu
===========
VULKAN INFO
===========
Vulkan Instance Version: 1.1.70
Everytime I try to start Witcher, it says:
GPU does not meet minimal requirements. Support for DirectX 11 is required.
Everytime I try to start GTA V, the launcher shows up, logs into my account successfully.
Then, it says:
ERR_GFX_D3D_N0D3D1X_4
No adapter for DirectX 10 or 11 found.

Hello, first thanks for all the great info!, So I’m having an real odd problem with my setup and have tried many things to make it work. I’m running Slackware 14+ current as of the day of this posting, my cpu is and Intel i5 6600K and GPU is an R9 390 not X version. all multilibs are insalled and up to date, the issue I’m running into is the «DX11 feature level 10.0 required to run the engine.» on Astroneer and «Failed to initialize graphics.Make sure you have DirectX 11 installed, have up to date drivers for your graphics card and have not disabled 3D acceleration in display settings. Initialize Engine Graphics failed» on Shortest Trip to Earth. also, I’ve checked and mesa is loaded and the default video card is currently set to the readon one. also I have tryed to use launch options to no avail. what ever information the group would require to help me figure this out would be greatley appreciated!
That’s the exact problem I’m having as well. No clue how to fix that. Having this problem on games which have gold status on Protondb.
If you also have a R9 390, that GPU has GCN 1.1 arch, so you must set radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1 as kernel parameter (remember to run grub-mkconfig once you update /etc/default/grup).
Once you boot with the new parameters, check that «vulkaninfo | grep device» returns your GPU name.

I can play games like Resident Evil 3 Remake Demo and Prey on Proton 5.0 just fine, but, on newer Proton versions, these games complain that my video card doesn’t support DirectX 11.
Prey, for example, displays this error message:
«Unsupported Graphics Card detected. A GPU with support for D3D FeatureLevel 11.0 is required.».
Unity Engine games display this message:
«Failed to initialize graphics.
Make sure you have DirectX 11 installed, have up to date
drivers for your graphics card and have not disabled
3D acceleration in display settings.
InitializeEngineGraphics failed»
Again, these games work perfectly fine on Proton 5.0.
Any idea what the problem might be? Is it really a GPU issue?
Operating System: Debian 10 (Buster)
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 940MX
Driver Version: 460.73.01

I’m seeing the same thing in Arch. Games ran fine a few weeks ago and won’t load at all now and proton 6 won’t load most games either.
Take thehunter call of the wild, It ran fine without selecting any proton compatibilty. Now it wont run it gives an error that I need to update my nVidia drivers. Only problem is I don’t have an nVidia card, I have an AMD RX 580. If I select proton 5.13-6 it runs fine and as of a few hours ago Proton-GE-6.8-1 works.
