Steam on Linux: Manjaro/Arch Black Screen Issue #8056

Steam on Linux: Manjaro/Arch Black Screen Issue #8056

Comments

Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): Built on July 20th 2021
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Manjaro
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: [Yes/No] No
  • Have you checked for system updates?: [Yes/No] Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

I expect to launch Steam and be greeted with the store front, and to be able to properly access different sections of the app (such as library, community, or profile). Instead, every single option is replaced with a completely black screen.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Run Manjaro (Arch Linux)
  2. Download Steam and Launch the application.
  3. See black screen.

The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:

Not the original reporter, but having the same issue on Arch. Started with the beta Steam client yesterday afternoon (PDT), which I then rolled back to non-beta. After that, it worked until the non-beta got updated later that night and now both the beta Steam client and the regular one exhibit this behavior.

Trimmed entries from the end of the steam-runtime command-line spew:
(steam:94028): LIBDBUSMENU-GLIB-WARNING **: 09:32:48.883: Trying to remove a child that doesn’t believe we’re it’s parent.
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1631237534)
Runtime for steamwebhelper: defaulting to /home/jjs/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/steam-runtime-heavy
/home/jjs/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/steamwebhelper.sh: line 48: FUNCNAME[0]: unbound variable

I had this same issue but got fixed with the most recent update.

I’m basically on your same situation, I just performed a complete system upgrade today, and I just tried to downgrade freetype2, thinking as before, if it was the cause, but no chance, tried the beta, the non-beta, all the cases with the same result, Black Screen issue.

May I add my log too for extra help?

I confirm this issue. Eventually after keeping the program open the steam self updater popped up and updated steam which fixed the issue. For future readers who have this issue keep the client open and wait for the self updater to popup.

I second this fix, go to steam in the top left and select ‘check for client updates’

I also have this symptom but I’m not on arch. All the embedded browser stuff is just black, no right click menu or anything. The address bar looks to always be in the loading state («stop» x on the left, spinner on the right). I’m not on the beta track and hadn’t updated my system when it started happening today (I have updated now to see if it would help).

Debian testing, X11, AMD graphics with mesa. Steam runtime steam-runtime_0.20210817.0. Built: Sep 10 2021, at 01:00:50. Package version 1631237534.
I tried checking for updates but it says «Your Steam client is already up-to-date».
I tried moving config/htmlcache out of the way to and that didn’t help either.

I don’t see any new errors on stdout or in the steamwebhelper logs (it complains about zenity not being available, but that isn’t new). I tried with -no-cef-sandbox and it didn’t help.

There is no new cef_log.txt files being created, there is a cef_log.previous.txt dated yesterday.

You may want to open a new issue or find a current issue for your system, as this issue has the ‘Distro Family: Arch’ tag

Hello @JustKarkat, I missed this detail earlier, but your Steam client is out of date and affected by #7935. Please update your Steam client.

Hello @toofar, you’ve encountered ValveSoftware/steam-runtime#458. The zenity issue has been around for a while and causing trouble, but it was less visible.

@stahara, please open a new issue report focusing on the FUNCNAME[0]: unbound variable error message in your log. It might be a duplicate of #8054, but there’s not enough info at this point to tell.

Closing as a duplicate of #7935.

Hello everyone.
I can open Steam.
I can see at the top, the menu: Steam View Friends Games Helpless
Store Library Community

At the bottom, I can see +Add a game

The part between those is all black, and the friends window doesn’t open up.
If I click on the menu Friends, Offline is checked.

There is a solution for Windows users where you create a shortcut and put -no-cef-sandbox next to steam.exe but I don’t know how to do that in Linux.

OS: Kubuntu 20.04.2
Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz
24 GB RAM DDR4
nVidia GTX 980 4 GB

The solution you’re referring to is much a workaround, the real solution is yet to be found because your system should run Steam fine without any options

Can you click the menu Help > System informations and share your operating system infos

OK, I I solved it by clicking on
Steam -> Settings.
Under beta participitation, click on No.

I thought I had to enable that so that PROTON works.

Well you opted out of the beta, so it is a workaround I mean if the issue is an uncaught bug, chances are that you will get the issue back at the next Steam release, and there is high chance I think because it does years I’m using the beta and I never got such working issue, beta is close to release quality

If I were you, I’d try to switch back to Beta, and if the issue persists, open a ticket on the steam-for-linux github.

If it works after going back to beta, it is very possible that your original issue was just an update failure

2 сен. 2021 в 17:00

Not much of a workaround really though I’m not sure why you’re having issues. I’m going to guess it may be a hardware issue being that I have Ubuntu installed as well, albeit 21.04, and have no issues. Either way, I’d follow class101’s advice since if it is related to their software, at least they’d be able to fix it if the problem continues.

Had the same issue, switching out of Beta solved it. Tried switching back to Beta and black screen returned. This began right after the last Beta update.
Running Kubuntu 20.04.

I’m hoping someone can help. Just recently, my Steam client stopped displaying the store, community, everything but my game library. I can still start games (at least the couple I tried), but nothing else displays in the Steam client window. I found some older discussions and s few YouTube videos, but nothing has worked. It’s weird, because everything was fine about a week ago or so, but last night the client just stopped displaying, it just opens to a black background. I have two different computers with Steam installed and they both started doing the same thing the same night. Is there something up with Steam itself? Any help would be appreciated.

Some people on the Windows client reports similar issues. Most of them fixed the issue deleting the browser cache (Steam->settings->Web Browser->Delete Web Browser Cache). Try it and let us know if it helped.

try activating or deactivating the «Beta Participation» under settings/account. it is a common issue apparently, i encounter the same when launch steam with Wine (Virtual Windows Machine) and havent found a fix yet.

The issue in wine is because of the sandbox in chromium, a simple Google search will tell you how to disable it and then be able to browse normally in wine. With the native client, on the other hand, this I hace not seen. If the usual work around do not work (steam —reset included), I’d try deleting and recreating .steam and .local/share/Steam directories, by means of deleting them and running Steam again. Needless to say, BACKUP FIRST!!

If it still doesn’t work, it might be your Steam installation, and a full reinstall with deleting the steam package and reinstalling it (and resetting it) might be in order.
