Personal Life [ ]
Linus is married to his wife Yvonne Ho; they married in May 2011. They also have three children in their family (a son and two daughters).
Before he made his YouTube channel he used to work for the now-closed Canadian electronics shop «NCIX» running the NCIX Tech Tips channel. He started the Linus Tech Tips channel while still working at NCIX.
Along with Yvonne, Linus founded «Linus Media Group» as the legal presentative of the channel [2] . Linus also has six more YouTube channels under the names Techquickie, TechLinked, Channel Super Fun, LMG Clips, LinusCatTips, ShortCircuit, They’re Just Movies (formerly known as «Carpool Critics«) and GameLinked.
Accomplishments [ ]
Make A Wish Foundation [ ]
On a live stream, Linus Sebastian talked about a boy who had stage four Leukemia. The kid asked the Make-A-Wish-Foundation for a personalized video from Linus. Linus talked about his emotions over the whole situation along with any thoughts he had about it, including how depressing the subject was. In the email where the Make-A-Wish-Foundation contacted him about making the video, they said «Be upbeat, and don’t talk about death.» Linus’ response was “this kid’s twelve, he’s like dying of Leukemia — the last thing I could do right now is be upbeat.” The kid originally planned on making a visit to Linus Media Group but his condition was upgraded to severe and he could not leave the hospital due to becoming heavily sick. He received an email from the son’s father a couple of weeks prior to the live stream containing a digital photo album of his son during the last part of his life. The last part of the album was dedicated to the computer they built him, with Linus making up specifications for a computer and sending over the parts for him to build it. Initially he was almost too weak attempt the build, but eventually did get to build it and play some games. A month later the son’s father thanked Linus for making the last part of his son’s life worthwhile, saying he made a big difference. [3]
Thinking of Retirement [ ]
In a live stream on the 22nd of January, Linus talked about retiring and his 10 Million Subscriber Milestone, stated that he didn’t want to treat it as anything special as it was just another milestone. He stated that his viewers made him «the luckiest person in the world» for helping his channel grow the way it has and how the channel has progressed. He then talked about how stressful his job is becoming and the tribulations he has faced and stated the title of the live stream was not click-bait, but he is only thinking about retiring, he is not actively planning retirement or will retire as of now. Linus stated that all he could see in the album of the kid who had Leukemia were his own kids, questioned why he was doing «all of this» — referring to his life choices and career choices. He joked about not doing videos anymore and spending time at home; these are his main reasons for thinking of early retirement. The company would’ve be running by the current employees but Linus could be the former CEO or Shareholder of Linus Media Group when or if should he retires. [4]
Stepping down from CEO [ ]
Effective 1st of July, 2023; Linus will be stepping down from the position of CEO of Linus Media Group, and will become the Chief Visionary Officer (CVO) of LMG instead. The new CEO position will be handled by Terren Tong, Linus’ former superior in NCIX and Marketing Director for Corsair (2015-2021) and Dell (2021-present). [5]
Linus stated the reasons for stepping down from the seat of CEO was due to his lacking of actual management experiences on the 100-plus staffs on all branches since the creation of the channel, even after 10-year of experience; and that financial gains «wasn’t his main driving force», as he was offered $100-million by an undisclosed company, but turnt down the deal as it «wouldn’t change his (family) lifestyles much». The shift, however, will helps Linus making more appearances as the main host on future LMG videos.
The changes of his CEO status does not change his position as the owner of LMG (along with his wife).
Meme Status [ ]
Linus is known for his trope of dropping gears/peripherals, made popular by his «accidental» drop of the 2017 Razer Blade during LTX 2017. Also since, he is known for his segues-lead to sponsors such as TunnelBear, Intel, Corsair, Seasonics, etc.
The image taken from the thumbnail of his January 2020 video «I’ve been thinking of retiring.», known coloquially as «sad Linus», which features Linus staring solemnly at the camera with his headset on, has been used as a reaction image and in ironic memes on Reddit and iFunny.
On May 23rd, 2019, Linus uploaded a front camera selfie to Twitter, writing «how much does YOUR selfie cam distort near the edge of the frame.» [6] The tweet received over 150 retweets and 1,700 likes in two months.
Quotes [ ]
- «He’s not spending any more money on this, he’s too busy blowing it on uncomfortable chairs» (Dennis Wasted His Money)
- «My children aren’t allowed to play mobile games.»
- «Let’s install some Windows XP on this bitch!» (the video where he rebuilt his first computer)
- «WHAT?! NO!» (trying to build the fastest computer)
- «Yes, do as I say.» (his final words shortly before bricking his computer while trying to install Steam during the Linux challenge; this caused him to switch his distro from Pop!_OS to Manjaro)
- «With all the AI shit that Google does, in 2023; how does it fucking possible, that when I said «call Yvonne Ho», it saids «I’m sorry, I don’t have a number for ‘Yvonne Home'».HO.[. ]If I say «call Jake Tivy», ok? You check; how many fucking Jakes are in my addressbook. Jake ‘Teevy’? Close enough.[7]
2023 channel hack [ ]
On 23 March 2023, Linus’s main channel got hacked by a Tesla scam. As a result, the hackers had the channel upload videos every second. At the time, he renamed the channel to «LinusTechTipsTemp» and his handle to @temporaryhandle after the hack occurred. Moreover, Linus did manage to upload a legitimate video titled «My Bengal Cats Love Their New Squiggly Toy! Linus Tech Tips» (despite the description being hacked), The account was then terminated, along with TechLinked and Techquickie. The channels were restored later that day. Linus would later upload a video talking about the situation, how to avoid getting hacked, and how YouTube/Google could improve security and the recovery process of hacked channels.
